Tombs won by 19 points over Nike Air. Nike Air started with only 5 players, later added one more. Gilbert Arrians did not play. They play in the final today at 3:00 PM against DC Assault.
The good, bad and indifferent. Tyler Crawford had his best game of the season. Rebounding, scoring and in your face defense. Roy Hibbert did not. He did not score until late in the fourth quarter. Could not rebound or catch it. He is young and there will be nights like this. It was a big contrast to Thursday where he played pretty good. Jeff Green was his usual outstanding self. Darian Townes at times took over the game. I truely regret that we let this one get away.
Bowman, Reed, John Wallace, and Josh Thorton did not play. The rest of the Tombs team consisted of Brian Mouton, David Vanderpool, Isaih __, and Glen Stokes. We could not have won without their contributions. Glen Stokes looks to be about 4 ft 6 in., but he was all over the court defending, scoring and yes, rebounding in among the trees. I hope he is a player we are looking at. ;D

Glen Stokes played at a juco and then finished his college career at American in 2003. I believe he plays in semi-pro league's with guys like Kurt Smith and G-Wiz. Nike Air started out fast, led by 7-10 points early, but Tombs pulled away from them in the 3rd quarter. The final score was like 125-107. I could see that some of the players from Nike Air would get tired, plus Nike Air had a couple of guys who just wanted to dunk or make a highlight. The coach of Tombs was really getting on Tyler Crawford, he was still aggressive on offensive hitting jumpers and driving to the basket. It looks as if the players just dismiss whatever he says. The guy who coaches Tombs, coaches the D.C. team that plays at the Rucker League in NY. Assault has won both of their playoff games by a combined 70 points(at least).

Tyler was definitely on track last night, and if he shows more flashes of play like he did, he should be a good influence on the team. Particularly if, by challenging for playing time, he encourages D.J. to step up his own game. Now that the frontcourt is slightly more full, Brandon should have a few opportunities to slide to the 3, and it seems DJ just needs a spark, a reason to elevate his game.
As far as Roy is concerned, the more I see of him, the more I think he has suffered from a lack of coaching and a lack of tutoring from, or playing against, other big guys. A lot of his shortcomings in Kenner seem to stem from a lack of awareness of how to use his size to his advantage, and hopefully a lot of coaching, going up against Cornelio and Jeff, and watching tape of Ewing, et al, will help him develop better habits. One very encouraging sign from Roy is that he's pretty solid at the line, for a 7-footer. To me, that shows that he's willing to put in time and effort to improve his game. If he gets some new lessons to practice, I think we'll see some improvements in those areas, too.

I can't really add much to what's been said in the three previous commentaries, all of which I agree with. I made it down to McD just in time to catch the Tombs game. They WERE charging, which sucked, and I very nearly snuck by the "boss" at the table, but ended up paying only 5 instead of 6 b/c they didn't have change (why not just charge 5 so you don't have to keep giving people 4 one-dollar bills back?)
Hard to really evaluate a game which was dictated as much as it was by the other team's having only 5 players at the start. I swore that one of the Nike Air guys fouled out in the 4th but came back in as a sub too--by this point the game was in hand.
"Indifferent" was a good word to describe the game--you just don't get as good a sense of players in the summer league-paced kind of game.
Roy did have a tough game--though the crowd was really on his side once he did put down a shot. He seemed to have a chronic inability to finish AND especially a chronic inability to take the initiative (i.e. take the ball up strong, recognize a clear advantage in the post). Also put up a few ugly looking bunny shots. Hopefully we can, over the course of a few years, teach him into a solid contributer. Hey, we're not asking for Patrick Ewing here--heck, I'd be thrilled if we got another Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje out of this (not a slight to Roy, just that I liked Ruben).
Darian did take over the game at times, but I do want to also give Tyler props for some good play during one of the runs that took the Tombs to a comfortable lead. Showing a good jump shot from 3 and the long-distance 2 range. Hopefully the instruction he's getting on the defensive end will pay dividends later on this season.
Didn't make today's final, hope it went well.
