People yell "FIRST" to get the ball on a tie-up? Maybe the first time of the game, but every one? Hmm. That's new.

That's been the case in all the games I've played in the last few years.

Cool article. I went down to Yates a bunch when I was a student and always enjoyed the pick-up games. Another faculty member who shoots hoops with the students (or at least used to) is Professor Collins of the History department.
Found that most people at Yates understood the game pretty well and played hard. Pick-up basketball on the UT campus doesn't compare to Yates at all -- it's mostly prima donnas trying to drive the lane every time they touch the ball, then slacking on D.

I played at Yates at least 4 times a week (more if there was something important i was supposed to be studying for/ writing for class) and because of height considerations i seemed to be matched up with WilsonBlvdHoya 70% of the time for a few years.
Always fun, even if i did really mess up my ankle second semester freshman year!
The "yelling FIRST" thing every time there is a jumpball seems pretty gay, though.

I suppose the 5 on 5 is full court. When we had only McD to play, we would have 3 on 3 or maybe 4 on 4 half court. That would allow more to play in our limited venue. I always thought that the half court version forced you to work on your skills more (except for maybe the long passes and the layups - I guess that is why I was so bad at layups). The bball team would rarely play in these pickup games, although I once remember guarding star guard Jim Brown in one post-season game in McD. The only faculty member I remember playing with was Dr. Dan Martire of chemistry. I believe he just retired a year or two ago. When the old Washington Senators were in town, Pete Rickert, good relief pitcher, would come over to play some hoops. I remember playing two on two with him on my team (we whipped the opponents). Ah, such memories.

I was up at Yates every afternoon this summer. I saw Pat Jr., BB, Jeff and the rest of the guys practice up there. It was a definite treat. Seeing what they're athletically capable of when the coaches aren't looking.... worth the price of admission!

The writer says "Sometimes the hostility between players — for racial, ethnic or gender-related reasons — is fierce" and then uses a quote by a girl who says she gets no respect since she isnt a man to illustrate this. that is weak. i never remember any racial or ethnic tensions at yates and the writer offers nothing to back up claim. yeah, women wouldnt always get respect but you can always earn respect on the court and send an idiot back to the sideline while you keep playing.
