A WNBA ring that is. Anyway, congratulations to Rebekkah Brunson, who helped the Sacramento Monarchs clinch the WNBA championship with a 12 pt. 6 rebound effort. Is her jersey up in McDonough? I kind of feel like it should be, especially now that she's joined Jaren Jackson as the only Hoyas with a _NBA title. sports.espn.go.com/wnba/recap?gameId=250920013

Bravo. Wish I had seen her play during my freshman year, two years ago.

I did see her play a few times, and she was awesome. Not to take anything away from the rest of our team, but she was so much better than everyone else on our team that I felt bad for her. If we had had some more talent around her we could have had a really good team.
It often looked like she was a guy playing against girls as she just ripped down rebounds with authority and scored easily down low.
Anyway, Congrats to Rebekkah on the championship!!! She deserves it!

While I've never been a fan of the WNBA and do not understand it as a spectator sport, Rebekkah's accomplishment is even more impressive than Jaren's ring as I think she played a larger role for her team (and Jaren's ring is impressive). There is no difference in accomplishment between the two. Congrats, Rebekkah!

You losers, it's the WNBA, get a life. That is the biggest joke of a sport there is. It would have folded years ago if it wasn't for the money from the NBA. That league is a joke!

She won a title. This is noteworthy. Would I care if there hadn't been a Hoya involved? No. But Brunson's a fellow Hoya who was a star for our Women's bball team and she was a key player in the Monarchs' title. And I think that's pretty cool.

I think as little of the WNBA as you do. Pro women's basketball has less appeal to me than pro lacrosse, and we know the interest level / salaries / media interest in that sport. Championships have nothing to do with how many people watch. The WNBA is the premier professional women's league in any sport in the US, and Rebekkah has proven to be a champion at the highest level of her sport. Just because I don't want to watch it doesn't demean the accomplishment. It's ridiculous to expect her to win an NBA championship -- that's why we have women's leagues. As to the argument that the WNBA is immature and that the level of play, even for a women's sport, is low, well, the same was true for the Celtics' and Bruins' titles in the 1960's. I don't see anyone denigrating those accomplishments. Congrats, Rebekkah! Truly a fantastic accomplishment!

I think they should hang her jersey up during Nine O'Clock Madness. Invite her back to campus and let her have a moment. WOuld be a cool thing for her and the women's team/program.

I must be the only person on this board that actually enjoys women's basketball. Go Mystics. Go LSU.

The WNBA would not still be around if not for the NBA's support. It would have folded years ago like the WUSA and all the other women's pro sports leagues. There's jsut not the support there because the product is just not that good. People don't want to watch the WNBA finals where the champion wins 62-59 on 33% shooting with 7 fast break points. The Sports Guy had a good column on this recently: sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/050901

The only reason I followed the playoffs at all was b/c of Brunson. And by followed, I mean I checked scores at night/made sure I saw the score as the ticker went by. No Hoya, no care. Hoya in a championship game? I care.

In my view basketball is fun to watch at all levels, starting with youth. It's unfair to expect WNBA basketball to be as good as NBA basketball. Those of you who are pushing to get greater interest in Hoya football, despite it's not being up to the level of Southern California, are a little inconsistent when talking down WNBA.

It's not like we have the NFL or ESPN screaming "Watch Patriot League Football" all the time and pretending that it's on the same level as the NFL, or even the SEC.
No one is expecting the WNBA to be as good as the NBA. It isn't and probably never will be. But to cram this substandard stuff down our throats, it's a joke.
And basketball is not fun to watch at all levels. I'm not going to watch a HS game unless (1) it's my high school (2) LeBron or Greg Oden is playing, or (3) I'm making the trek out to Cole to watch Sweetney win the state championship.
I don't think anyone is against the fact that there is an WNBA. Just don't be surprised when nobody wants to watch, buy tickets, or sponsor the league.
And don't take this as anything against Rebekkah Brunson. I've followed her since her days at Oxon Hill when she came out with Sweetney, saw her get drafted, and paid attention to the WBNA finals (box scores) because she was playing.

No, we're saying pay attention to Hoya football b/c you are a Hoya and so are they. In no way are we trying to push it as top notch football. We're pushing the experience and supporting your school. I support Hoya football for the same reason I wanted the Monarchs to win the WNBA title--b/c fellow Hoyas are involved.

IMO, WNBA coverage is definitely not crammed down our throats. One of my major complaints is that ESPN's coverage is so poor, despite the fact that the WNBA is one of their properties. During the regular season, and even in the playoffs, WNBA coverage is rarely in the early segments, frequently falling in the 5th or lower. They definitely did not show highlights of all the games. I lament the poor coverage. But then again, I know I am one of the few that actually enjoys the women's game.
