As a side thought, many may want to consider a NO trip in early '06. I know people like to give money, but that town is built on tourism and it will need that back soon. It is a very poor town for the most part and nothing would help more then dropping some dollars while enjoying some great southern hospitality.

It's questionable whether the Tulane, Loyola and (let's not forget) Xavier college squads are even going to be "constituted" for the Fall Semester. The Association of Jesuit Colleges in the U.S. sent out an emergency alert asking fellow jebbie institutions to offer berths for fall semester at their colleges. www.ajcunet.edu/tier.aspx?bid=451Over 200 such students -- refugees from N.O. -- have arrived on the campus at Loyola Marymount U. in Los Angeles. The Hilltop will probably take on a quota of students as well.

I hate to say this, but I can't believe it would take 5 days to get help to a flooded area where people are starving and dying, no food, no water, no power, .... if this were in, say, Salt Lake City or Darien, CT. This is absolutely disgraceful and completely unacceptable.
This administration -- which claims they are making us so much safer from terrorists and set up the Homeland Security Dept. to handle all kinds of emergencies, can't even respond to a flood? When they knew over a week ago that Hurricane was headed that way? How on earth would they respond to a major terrorist attack?
There are Dead Bodies floating in N.O. People stranded. Hospitals with no power, water, plumbing, food. FOR FIVE DAYS! This isn't Indonesia -- it is the United States of America.
These Bozos in DC should be thrown out on their asses.

there is a good conversation on this subject at the Blue & Gray board...
i am watching the floor debate right now and watched the congressional black caucus earlier today. i am personally disgusted that anyone is making this political. anyone that thinks the republican president or the democratic governor of louisana doesn't want to help these people is ridiculous... and to say that it's racism is unreal. darien, ct? salt lake city? please. you’re delusional. could things have been done better? yes. the president even said they are unaccetable. in the months ahead i am sure a new commission will be set up to investigate what went wrong.
we need to help these people now and quit the partisan bickering.
give some of your own money or the from your pantry and quit blaming the president - i am sick and tired of politics.
this is a time to view yourself as a human being, an American, not a Bush hater.
(sorry - i agree with the above two statements, i am just sick to my stomach right now and had to respond)

GU's response for Loyola students: explore.georgetown.edu/news/?ID=2747Georgetown University today announced that in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina it will provide academic assistance to undergraduate students from Loyola University New Orleans who have been displaced as a result of the devastation. Undergraduate students at Loyola University New Orleans who are from the metropolitan Washington, DC area may take courses at Georgetown University during the Fall 2005 semester through an emergency cross registration program (ECRP).

Can we lock this one down or move it to the B&G? The discussion would be more appropriate there.

;D ;D ;D This one is basketball related. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=2148888Looks like Tulane's team might be looking for a temporary home at another college so they can get their season underway in some fashion. New coach is former Terp assistant .... and guess which notable Terp (from their NC team) just got married this past Saturday? See ........... it's all BASKETBALL related!! ;D

Outside of the basketball topic for this article, the new bball coach sounds VERY classy and sounds like a great person/coach to get this universities mens bball team through the tragic times that they are facing now-Tulane is truly lucky to get him.

What happened at Xavier? Did I miss something? Xavier and Tulane have cancelled the entire fall semester. Haven't heard about Loyola or UNO, but they will likely follow suit. www.xulaemergency.com/

Try to imagine the same scenario with a different group of people stranded in New Orleans. We all know the city hosts hundreds of conventions each year. Let's say that a group of 20,000 Christian Right religious white folk somehow were stranded in the Superdome. Maybe Pat Robertson and Ralph Reed were with them. No food, no water, no power, 90+ degree heat, overflowing toilets that don't work, no medical assistance, no one in control, Pitch black inside and out at night, rioting and gunfire in the streets. Do you really believe the president would have been sitting on his ass at his ranch in Crawford while those people were left to fend for themselves? How about a convention of Oil Industry executives? An NRA convention? Texas cattelmen? A large group of Yale alumni? Maybe a group of Text Book reviewers from Kansas, meeting to discuss how to ensure creationism is taught in every school in America? GWB would have left them there? to starve? No water? to die? For 5-6 days?!?! Do you really believe that? Can you honestly say that is the probable outcome of such a scenario? But that is exactly what happened to a group of poor black people from New Orleans. So who is delusional? Maybe it is the Bush supporters who, just like him, can never admit a mistake?
