This isn't a recap in the normal way I do these things. All of us here have been to High School, most of us have been to college, quite a bunch of us went to Georgetown--I'm sure we can all imagine the components of what goes into a GU Pep Rally. And a good one it was, believe me. Lots of coaches, lots of dancing...Pom-Poms everywhere!! Dance groups galore!! Freshman who...well, they're getting closer to learning the Fight Song every day!!
I do have something to say however that I personally feel is important and deserves to be said.
I had the chance to attend the Pep Rally tonight and to spend some time at the Hoya Blue tables that were set up outside of Gaston Hall.
I've been through four years at Georgetown and am working on my second year post-Hilltop, if you will. I've seen Hoya Blue at its finest and at its worst, students sections from overflowing to perfect for stretching out and sleeping in the aisles at MCI, and about every different level of interest in GU sports. It matters a lot to me and I pay attention to that kind of stuff.
Tonight was absolutely the best performance I have seen from Hoya Blue in six years. Everything, from the way they ran their program on-stage to their interaction with the kids in the Class of 2009, was right on. If I had to envision what I thought Hoya Blue should be like in the perfect world, I could do a lot worse than what I saw tonight. On the way home tonight I was probably happier to be a Hoya fan than I've been in quite some time--and I say that without exaggerating or trying to pull on blue and gray heart strings here or any crap like that.
It's a great thing to hear NSO staffers and OAs come up to a Hoya Blue table and thank the HB volunteers for doing such a great job and far exceeding their expectations. One even pointed out how much better Hoya Blue had done compared to last year's Pep Rally. Or to have sat and watched on two separate days (I came upon HB's table on Sunday afternoon and rather randomly ended up staying there for quite a while observing and helping) eager, downright excited freshman practically run down Hoya Blue's table to sign up for everything they could put their pens and parent's credit cards to. If you read some of the Hoya Blue Board threads, you'll see just how many people did so.
There are plenty of people who've contributed a great deal of their time and effort over the past week during NSO helping get Hoya Blue off to a good start. They're probably too numerous to mention, and I couldn't really do it justice anyhow.
What I would say in place of that, however is this:
One of the main themes John Thompson III touched on tonight when he spoke (OTHER than "Man, it's hard to get my team and the band to do a cheer correctly!") was a simple three word message:
WE NEED YOU.
He's of course talking about basketball games and the student section.
But there's another group of kids that also need you, the ones that will make that student section such a powerful thing.
To every current GU student who reads this message board and loves them some Georgetown athletics--get involved with Hoya Blue however you can. You don't have to be a Board member, a dorm captain, a guy selling T-shirts (nice looking ones too, I bought mine tonight). You can be a guy at the football game, that crazy person with the cowbell at a soccer game this very weekend, the person in your econ class who wears their I Bleed Hoya Blue shirt EVERY Tuesday-Thursday at 10:15, or just the person who drops by the Hoya Blue table and gives somebody a high-five.
(Although, hey, they're going to do another call for applications, so there's that.)
For everyone else--do what you can. Buy yourself a "We Are Georgetown" shirt and/or a Hoya Blue shirt. Come by a GU sporting event if you're in the area--better yet, come see one of the sports teams that doesn't get the attention they deserve quite yet (really, that's everything except basketball). When you see Hoya Blue and its legions of supporters there--and you will--tell them they're doing a great job. If you're not in the area, channel your own internal Bleeding of Hoya Blue in whatever way you can--preferably in public next to someone who went to a school you don't care much for.
There are some things that are just worth supporting. All I can tell you to explain why someone who graduated from Georgetown over a year ago walked over from Foggy Bottom on a Tuesday night after a full work day really just to watch a pep rally and stand for a while at a table that was selling shirts and tickets is: I think what this group of kids running Hoya Blue are doing is worth supporting.
At this point, Georgetown's only in it's first full day of classes. But Hoya Blue--and really, the entire Class of 2009--are already off to a great start. And we should all be a little happier as Hoya fans because of it.
