Hopefully this doesn't dampen the mood, but I'm curious as to how Macklin is doing academically. I read how he admires Georgetown's academic reputation, which is a good thing to say, but what's with these rumors (from other school's talk boards... especially UNC's) about him qualifying? He's taking the SATs for the first time this year. Is is GPA high enough so that with the sliding SAT scale, it would be a given that he'll qualify? Is there any reason for us to be worried?

I'm thinking he transferred from Norcom for a reason(maybe his Grades/SAT) as it damn sure wasnt because he wanted to get his name out there.
Hopefully I'm wrong.

I don't think anyone on here has access to that kind of info, but his prep coach is confident in Macklin's ability to qualify, and he's probably seen the transcripts.

Hargrave gets kids eligible, and I expect Macklin to be no different. We don't know his GPA or SAT scores, nor do we have any right to know that sort of information. All you can do is trust that the staff has seen that stuff, and they think he will make it.
Sam Young, on Pitt, went to Hargrave to clean up his academic record. It was touch and go, and there were rumors that he wasn't going to make it, but he is now apparently enrolled at Pitt and eligible to play (and probably star) next year.

I think Hargrave is known for whipping kids into academic shape. It may have been that Ticket and his family knew his academics might be an obstacle if he stayed at his current school, and thus they sent him to Hargrave to make sure he buries his nose in the books. If so, good for them.

What I wonder though, is why he hasn't taken the SAT yet. Is it common for big recruits not to take it until fall of their senior year? If I was a player being recruited, I would want to take the test early, to give myself time to improve my scores if they were bad. I also would think that a player who has already qualified before his senior year would be a more attractive recruit to a coach. But maybe it's best to wait, because if the scores are bad, you don't want to scare away recruiters. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Hargrave got Sam Young eligible. Macklin will be eligible.
While I took my SAT during winter of junior year, most students who aren't quite as college conscious wait until senior year.

I read that he's relieved to have finally chosen a school so that now he can focus on academics. Hopefully, there's truth in that statement.

Maybe it was different for me because I went to a private school in a fairly affluent area, but everyone I knew who took the SAT took it in April, May or June of their junior year (possibly more than once) and then only in the fall if they needed to improve.

Depends on the school system... I was at Norfolk State for 2 years so I know a lot of IC Norcom products...some were very intelligent and focused, and some, not so much...I would equate it to Oxon Hill High...you have very bright and college-bound kids, and you have kids that are there because...well... they have to go somewhere...cain't stay at home all day... I had 2 classmates at Norfolk St. from Norcom that were definitely focused...one went on to grad school at MIT...the other went on to become one of the youngest female instructors of Chemistry at Harvard...(man, she was phatter than a 3rd grade pencil...)

. (man, she was phatter than a 3rd grade pencil...) That's going in my brain rolodex of one liners. Nice! Of course, if I use it on my pregnant wife, she may mistake the PH for a F, so I think I'll wait a few months to use it!

Most kids take the SAT in junior year so that they'll have a better idea of where they can make it and where they can't when the application season opens up in the fall. I don't think Ticket is/was really concerned about figuring out ahead of time what schools he could apply to based on his standardized testing scores.

Same for me and I went to a huge public school. Most of the kids applying to the Georgetowns and Ive league and other comparable schools basically took that strategy, however I know there were some kids who only took it once and it was likely in the fall. Very few if any seniors took the SAT I in the spring though, because by that time just about all of the college apps were in. It's just different with ballplayers like Vernon though. He isn't trying to knock anyones socks off with his score, he's just trying to get it up to a certain level. If he doesn't qualify in the October SAT, he'll still have ample time and a number of opportunities to get his score up for spring. That's pretty much what happened to Jeff, who didn't get his qualifying score until I think June (correct me if Im wrong). While I don't know a ton about this, I imagine that half the battle with getting these players to get a qualifying SAT score is helping them identify which questions to answer and which to not even try. I'm really hoping Vernon is able to prove everyone wrong this fall when he sits for the SAT. UNC, Wake, and UMD fans are always ragging on his academics and suggesting he'll be ineligible. I'd love to see him qualify on his first try just to show them.

I wish I could take credit for that one, DH...the first time I heard it, I was rollin' on the floor because I remembered how HUGE those pencils were, and what a struggle it was to hold them... I figured that someone would appreciate it...

Most of the kids I knew that weren't going to Top 50 schools -- weren't focused on college -- lapsed behind.
A lot of recruits haven't taken an SAT. Frankly, I'm not worried.
