Only two unranked schools survived the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Clemson, the sixth seed in the West Regionals, defeated New Mexico and #14 Baylor, and North Carolina State, the eleventh seed in the South Regionals, defeated #22 Texas Tech and Oakland. The Tigers and Wolfpack join #5 North Carolina and #13 Duke as four surviving representatives of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the Sweet Sixteen. All three Big East Conference schools also moved into the Sweet Sixteen, with #1 Connecticut defeating Stetson and Northwestern, #8 Marquette defeating Western Kentucky and Colorado, and #10 Creighton defeating Akron and Oregon.
Conversely, the first weekend was not so kind to the Mountain West, Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences, The Mountain West Conference had six schools in the NCAA Tournament, and only #24 San Diego State survived the opening rounds. The Big 12 Conference had seven schools in the Tournament, and only two schools (#2 Houston and #4 Iowa State) are still playing. The Southeastern Conference had eight teams selected for the Tournament, and only two schools (#6 Tennessee and #19 Alabama) continue to participate. Certainly it is arguable that Seton Hall would have acquitted itself far more competitively than those schools from these three conferences that were selected instead of the Pirates.
