I've been talked into not wanting either. I liked Dug in high school and thought he would be a good college player. I haven't watched enough Michigan to see if he can be the solution. I just hope we aren't looking at the shiniest object as that seemed to be Ewing's downfall with no idea what pieces fit together. McDaniel takes fewer shots and has lower usage than Mintz, but both are high. McDaniel's efficiency and shooting are better. Some here have said Mintz's defense is better, but I haven't seen either of them play other than Mintz's game against Georgetown. Either way, either one would probably be a pretty big improvement to the roster. As far as the "shiniest object"--I get your point, but part of the problem with Ewing is that he was a horrible/clueless coach, and he relied a lot on assistants like Nickelberry to stock his roster. I don't think the same worries exist with Cooley.

Between Epps and either Judah/Dug, who else will ever see the ball? Unless you’re getting an offensive rebound you’ll likely never have a chance to take a shot Go back to Providence. Channeling a famous Georgetown alum, “What are we talking about? Practice?” Let me know if you need me to tell you who that was

Exactly what I suspected. It also seems that if you read the tea leaves, Cooley has 1 or 2 guys that are freshman that he is targeting to use some of that on. Like McKenney and Jordan Smith. They are the big guards that PC has had.

Either Mintz or McDaniels would be an order of magnitude improvement in our PG position. That's exactly the type of player we should be targeting w/NIL. Need to put this season behind us and fast. He's recruiting a core and he needs to sprinkle on the experienced talent.

The top 50 incoming Big east portal guys this past cycle included Ashworth, Bamba, and Dingle. Oduro, Styles, Luis, Epps, and McKnight were all 50-100.
Looking at the prior cycle, it was Hopkins, Curbelo, Diarra, Akok, Locke, Murphy, in the top 50 with Murray, Carter, Bates, Wahab, Davis, and Dawes from 51-100.
What that tells me is fit is likely more important then hype. It also tells me there are some kids who probably transfer for a reason (Curbelo, Wahab, Murray) who you shouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. The GM job in modern college basketball is huge. Butler put together a good transfer class without much money but where the fit mattered. They aren't world beaters but they are competitive. Building from within is still going to matter and we need to get old with the Brumbaugh/Fielder/McKenna/Sorber/Mulready/Williams classes.

I fully expect us to be involved with any DMV guys looking to come home. I hope we look at Reynolds because he is a 1 year guy.

No idea whether Wolf is the right guy for us, I'm sure there will be many quality big guys in the portal to consider in a few weeks. But I think this underscores an important point, which is that even if we are well-positioned NIL-wise going into portal season, the competition for top players is going to be very stiff. It's not unlike what we saw for a guy like Dickinson last year--we are in a position to make a very competitive NIL offer, but so too are schools like Kansas, Kentucky, and others. And if they're even in the same ballpark, playing for a Top 10 team looks far more appetizing than going to a program that has won 3 conference games in 3 seasons. You wonder if that may also have been the situation with a guy like Cam Spencer last year--a big NIL offer from us might have been the original impetus for him entering the portal, but if you then get a comparable offer to play for a school coming off a championship, it's an easy choice. Point I'm trying to make is, even with a very healthy NIL budget, it may be pretty difficult to land the cream of the crop transfers because there will be other schools who can make similar offers and who have much more to offer in the way of recent on-court success. That's why I still think our best bets are probably guys who are from the area who may want to transfer back home, or guys who Cooley and staff have pre-existing relationships with. Even with our NIL in pretty good shape, I think it'll be tough to land the very top tier recruits unless we have a pre-existing leg up like that. Otherwise I think we're looking at more Tier 2 types--and to be sure, there is plenty of talent there. Every year we see guys who are transferring up from mid majors who end up being excellent. But the hit rate on those is not nearly as high. For that reason I think we HAVE TO strongly consider guys like McDaniel and Mintz if they are interested. Of course, all proper diligence is required, we don't want guys who will bring chemistry problems etc. But purely from a basketball point of view the reflexive answer should be yes UNLESS there's something disqualifying thats uncovered. If we were already like 13-7 in league, then sure, I think we could be more discerning about who to take and how they fit with the existing group. But when you're 2-18ish, I think you just need to upgrade your talent by any reasonable means necessary and worry about how the lineups will shake out and who will play what role in the fall. This team is not going to go from 2-18 to competing for the Big East just through development of current players and a couple of additions around the fringes. We need a significant talent infusion. Again. Or, maybe I should say...still . And high level players from the DMV might be one of the most realistic paths to getting that talent.

I think it’s a fair argument to say that Mintz in particular might limit your ceiling- you’re probably not winning the BE or reaching the Final Four with him as your lead guard. But we need to walk before we can run, and these kids would do a lot to get us back to respectability, which has to be the only goal in the near term.

Exactly. It's much less about the ceiling and much more about raising the floor short term

Sounds like Mintz is a lock for the Hoyas. I see pluses and minuses to it. Likely won’t get any other high level ball handlers, but y’all will have plenty of scoring options I'm assuming this is coming from Trilly Donovan? Trilly posted on the 18th... "Good source just told me Judah Mintz's most likely destination is Georgetown. " Far from a lock obviously

" Far from a lock obviously The person that is signed up to his discord showed me that post but also he is talking that a lot of Team Takeover guys are going to be in the portal this offseason and Takeover is involved with getting them spots. Would make sense because Cooley has been really mending fences with them over there. Caleb being one get from that new working relationship.

Trilly added two more former DMV guards to his likely portal list, both of whom were recruited by Gtown at some point: Ish Leggett (Pitt) and Frankie Collins (ASU).

After tonight I move from the Okpara camp to the Amari Williams/Danny Wolf camp. We need more bulk and at least they can play outside and handle it and pass. Both could work with Supreme Cook better.

I don't think Cooley will run Cook off. And I don't think there are meaningful minutes at the 5 after Cook, Sorber, and Fielder take their share. So I don't expect a high NIL big to come.
For me this is reasonable because it raises the NIL available for a high NIL guard.
