Seton Hall has been playing well and has some great wins, but they also have a bunch of bad losses. Hopefully, Tuesday will be a night when they are not playing at their best which has happened not infrequently.

They lost to: USC (104) Iowa (84) Baylor (38) Rutgers (115) Xavier (47) I don’t see any horrible loses there. Except for Rutgers those are all talent filled teams. And even Rutgers is in the top 115. Considering they have 4 new transfers (2 starters and 2 rotation players) And lost five key players: three starters from last years team (2 transfers and a graduate in Ndefo) and 2 rotation player. The teams progression is consistent with players getting to know each other and learning/gaining experience and buying into Shaheen’s system

They lost to Xavier by 20, Baylor by 18, and Iowa by 13. Baylor is ranked highly but Xavier does not have their best team. Iowa is 10th in the Big 10. Maybe they are making a progression, and maybe they are a team that occasionally lays an egg.

Seton Hall, if they keep playing better, may find themselves in bubble territory, but I think the odds they hit the Top 25 are pretty low unless they keep steamrolling over the Big East. Seton Hall has some good wins in their last 4 games, but really had none before that. So we will see how it shakes out. This is one of our best chances to win another game. Seton Hall does not shoot threes well (way below average), nor do they shoot many of them. And they don't shoot twos well either (only slightly above average). They also turn it over a ton on offense, though they are pretty good at forcing turnovers on defense too. They are top 10 in offensive rebounding, so the boards will need to be a big focus for our guys. If we can overcome their defense and shoot well from three, we have a good chance to win this one. Disagree. Seton Hall May be the best team in the big east. They are very good but also at the top this year the big east isnt as good as last year. UConn and Creighton are both not as good as last year and have holes. Marquette has some issues. There may be more good teams in the big east (when you include St. John’s, seton hall) this year but not great teams. Seton hall is a very tough game for us. There are other teams that we have a better chance at beating. We can agree to disagree. Seton Hall has been playing better recently, no doubt, but even in Big East play they aren't shooting threes that well (33.3%), they aren't shooting twos that well (45.4%), and they are the worst team in Big East play in turnover rate. Barring major improvement and Marquette/Creighton and others having a major downward trend, I just don't see how Seton Hall would be at the top of the league this year. Creighton already destroyed us, and I think we have little chance against UConn. We are still an underdog, but I think we have a real chance tonight given that Seton Hall doesn't shoot well and turns it over a ton.

I’m expecting a close one tonight. No way they find a way to get up for this one and I have a feeling we will. If we are going to steal a decent win this year this is as good of a spot as any.

My only question for this team going forward is why so many uncontested drives to the basket by our defense. You have to at least give a hard foul to prevent some of these baskets. I also did notice some team development last game but also noticed some selfish one on one moves that were unnecessary. Go Hoyas

Go Hoyas We play two guys off the bench, we have very little depth (which was a roster construction choice by the coaching staff). My guess is we don't foul on those uncontested drives because 1) our defense is predicated on contesting three pointers and we're willing to concede the drive in exchange for those contests; and 2) the 5 starters are being told not to foul because they don't have backups capable of picking up their minutes effectively.

Our NET ranking is 212 Quad 3. A loss to us will be devastating to any teams ncaa chances so I doubt anyone is going to overlook us.

I think this will be a constant refrain against all our opponents, i.e. hope that they play down to our level. When they don't (see Marquette/Creighton) we get killed. When they do (see DePaul) we win, albeit unimpressively.

I don't think we'll do it, but this is the type of surprise win that could inject a bit of life into the program and fanbase. Seton Hall may well be a lot better than I think, so it may be even more of a longshot. But I don't think we are going to have a lot of realistic shots at feel-good wins the rest of this season, and this could be one. Really hope it happens.

Seton Hall is 7th nationally in offensive rebound rate. That is a scary reality going into tonight. I hope Cook, Styles, and Fielder stay out of foul trouble and are up for the challenge.
The turnover margin will be extra important as given their strength / our weakness we might be outshot by a large margin. Thankfully they aren’t a team that forces a lot of TOs, so hopefully that will close the potential gap in FGA disparity.

Even though I have us squeaking out a 1-point win on the prediction thread, a loss would be more palatable if we show progress like a) take care of the ball - fewer turnovers, b) strong rebounding on both ends, and c) good movement on the offensive end, esp. by getting the ball inside so Drew and Supreme can score, get fouled, or kick it out for some open threes. If we do those things tonight, I think we will be in the game at the end. (I normally would add strong defense of the perimeter, but there is the consensus here that SH doesn't do that well.)
Now, if Epps, Styles, Rowan, and Massoud have solid nights offensively, that would offset slips in these areas.
Let's go, Hoyas!

Despite being one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the country, the Pirates' still find ways to win very difficult games. During Saturday’s upset against Marquette, the Pirates committed a season-high 22 turnovers. But Al-Amir Dawes helped Seton Hall overcome their bad ball security by recording 23 points. Although he's a team leader, this was a surprising burst from Dawes since a shooting slump reduced his production to just 27 total points over the last three games.
When it comes to their match-up against UConn, Seton Hall left nothing to chance. Understanding that they aren't the best shooting team, the Pirates only attempted 8 threes the whole game. Instead, they deployed a suffocating defensive attack against the Huskies that resulted in UConn only converting 19% from three.

It should be a good learning experience for Rowan, Fielder, and Bristol (? Does be still have eligibility cause of Covid year, etc) on what kind of strength you need/how physical you have to be in the Big East.

I worry if the Pirates are as good defensively as reputed. Our sporadic offense of late vs their D? On the other hand, if Epps is healthy and gets hot and Styles and Supreme stay in nasty mode- we have a chance. This is also a good test for Rowan's development- Holloways teams are usually guard dominant, and will likely harass him...if he holds up and low TOs, a good sign. Cannot believe that SH had 22 TOs vs UCONN and still won. If they duplicate that number or close to it- we have to win.

Tough sledding for turnout tonight, as the 14 National Weather Service alerts have made the roads a mess.
(On the upside, I snagged a parking spot less than a block from the arena)!
