Now trying to find the postgame presser and no luck. Away games are sometimes tough, but shouldn't be. Since ND only posted their side of the presser we will likely never know. EtomicB should be all over this one! It's a huge miss by SID and has been for years.

Found the ND presser on YouTube
"I think Drew Fielder came in here and outworked every one of our bigs...he was runnin' hard, he was playin' hard, and our guys were behind the play."

Gotta be thinking long term when looking at performance, and today was very good indeed...The frosh, Brumbaugh and Fielder, player very good....When you have a freshmen guard playing against P5 competition the 4 TOs were not bad, even though painful to watch.
The game is slowing and coming to Fielder game by game. He is going to be a big part of the next 3 years. Add our late addition in January, and the three top players we have in the pipeline plus Cooley's cool head down the stretch, and things are looking good.
Well done Hoyas

For what seems like forever, if the Hoyas, playing P6 teams, were down by four or more by the time of the first official timeout, they tended to not win the game. Even on their own homecourt.
If the Hoyas founded themselves down by nearly ten points, playing P6 teams, with roughly four minutes left in the first half, they tended to not win games. Even on their own homecourt.
If the Hoyas, playing P6 teams, had a lead late and blew it within the last four or so minutes left in the game, they tended not to win. Even on their own homecourt.
This Notre Dame squad the Hoyas faced is not impressive but that type of quality opponent still would beat the Hoyas with the scenarios I mentioned above anyway. But these Hoyas, without their leading scorer, went on the road and got it done despite finding themselves in some tough situations. I can't complain.

Plus I promised hoyasaxa2003 that I would table that discussion until the off-season, you're right however it is an inexcusable miss.

Ultimately, I'm happy with the win. I thought Brumbaugh and Fielder, in particular, showed well in Epps's absence and there's plenty of promise for the future.
With that said, I can't let the win paper over the fact that this game should've never required a last second shot, much less OT at all. The late game execution looked like we were trying to hand them the game. Missed layups, turnovers, and missed FTs are a blueprint to coughing up a game and we nearly did just that. I'm not sure what Coach can do since much of the issues are the skills, fundamentals, and concentration that most learn well before college. I have to also call out our team's awful tendency to give up offensive rebounds.
Tactically, I have a ton of faith in Cooley. His ability to draw up a play out of a timeout is something this program has been missing for a few years. I have faith that if we can keep it close till the end, he can coach a win. The only thing that would put that at risk is the aforementioned lack of fundamentals/basketball IQ.

I think there has been one for every game so far, which is a good change. The home team often "owns the recording" and shares or posts both sices, as Georgetown does.

After TCU we deserve every win we can eek out this year. The bbl gods owe us that much.
For the first time in a long while I'm excited by what I see on the court. Sure this year will not be anything to brag about but you can see things starting to develop long term. Add Sorber and a legit point guard next year and I think we are on the bubble. Give Cooley another recruiting year and we will be a BE contender and NCAA tourney team by 25-26.

We’ll be a tourney team next year for at the very least because the BE should be worse. And we already have a legit pg in Brumbaugh although it would be nice to add depth.

Always better to win and like others very pleased with Brum and Fielder. But that ND team is awful. We are really bad, but I’m not sure they have a single player who starts for us. Just let that sink in. And don’t tell me the little dude. I love his heart. But he is aggressively average. That team is truly hideous.

I think the point guard for the next 3 years played a great game for us today and recruiting a point guard to replace Rowan would be a huge mistake. We have 7 returning players and four new ones joining us next year. One of those two should be a backup to Rowan that can grow into a starter when he leaves. Epps is best as the shooting guard and should not be bringing the ball up court or running the offense, A shooting guard with great 3 pt range would be a good choice for the other remaining scholarship.
Assuming our 7 eligible players all stay, not an unreasonable assumption, with the 4 incoming players, which of them do you bench? Do you really see one of the two open scholarships being a starter? We will not have a 13 man rotation. Which of the six returning players that are getting major minutes this year, who do you move to the end of the bench? I see those six plus at least two of the new comers as an 8 man rotation that can be very competitive in the Big East and the other two plus whoever we bring in for the remaining scholarships giving us depth for injury and personal foul situations, and earning a larger role the following year when Styles, Cook, Bristol, and Mutumbo all leave.
If players can transfer a second time and play, that will certainly change things. The strategy of bringing in transfers with 2 or 3 years of eligibility is a great one. But if the NCAA caves and it is effectively free agency for everyone, that is another sysmic shift and a separate discussion of what value thevNCAA brings to college athletics.

Good win. Love seeing Fielder progress. He will be a handful one day, I just hope it’s as soon as next year

We are not “really bad” until we lose by 40 points to a so-so Villanova team in a Big East Tournament game despite having a season’s worth of time to gel.

Been awhile since I posted but I still lurk and watch games from time to time when my therapist says it's healthy enough to do. What I watched yesterday was still rough but promising. Neither team is going to do much in conference play but evenly matched without Epps. Really liked Burton for ND. Brum did ok but felt he and Heath danced too much in 2nd half vs trying to run the offense. Fielder was fun to watch but is it a flash or can he be consistent, we'll see. I don't remember seeing too much of Bristol and felt Styles was a bit quiet when he could of been a bigger factor. Ish needs to learn to finish around the rim and he'd be more than just another Kaiden Rice. Supreme is doing what he can. Let's hope they continue to gel and make some noise in BE.

ND is not Coppin State hideous and we beat them on the road without our leading scorer. Don't you see improvement from the Cuse game?

I've enjoyed the Hoyas for decades now, and am happy with the change of direction for the program. But I agree with the previous poster. We are not yet a good team. Certainly better than we've been, but not yet good. IMO, we have yet to assemble a core group of championship quality players. We must continue to improve our talent level from what we have today if we are ever to become a top level team again.

I think there are grades beyond just good or bad. Any team that is not a title contender is not a bad team. We really understand “bad” after the last five years. I would say any team that achieves a .500 record in conference is a good team. Any team that wins a spot in the big dance, other than through a string of upset wines in the BE Tournament is very good. Getting to the sweet 16 is very, very good. Getting to the final 4 is a great team. Winning it is a championship team. Those are my definitions.
We will not be a good team this year. But if we don’t finish in the bottom 2 we are not a bad team. Pick the definition you think could be the best fit for us in late February: turnaround team, improving, short 1 or 2 key pieces, developing an identity, or a threat to upset many teams in the country. One thing will get little disagreement, this team is a lot more fun to watch than ant team we have had on the floor the last three years other than the one week of winning the BE Tournament.

Notre Dame is not an awful team! As a matter of fact, I would say we are evenly matched, in the same place as far as development goes. With the coaching—both coaches seem like excellent coaches—I believe both teams can make a run this year. Notre Dame’ coach was definitely disappointed in his team’s performance. Which tells me he has very high expectations for this year.
