This will be a good barometer for our front court in Big East play.
Rutgers starts a 6-11 center and 6-9 power forward. And have 6-9 and 6-8 rotation players.

One of my teachers talked about the false notion of winning. He shared that frequently when you won it was less about what you did and more about what your opponent did or did not do, and that winning in most cases shut down the space for the possibility of learning and improving. So hopefully the benefit of losing to Holy Cross was that Cooley was able to make some really effective coaching points to the team about what is expected and what must be avoided.

Hot take : we won't have a barometer on our front court play until Ish Massoud comes back. A lot of people have the take that Massoud is 6'9" and our rebounding should be a lot better when he comes back. I don't see things that way. Massoud is not really a rebounder but he can shoot threes and should be able to force other teams to spread the floor and the ball movement should be a lot better. The problems on Saturday were with defensive rebounding though, and I don't think we're going to be able to fix those problems this year.

That Nova/MD game is going to be interesting. Both teams with bad early losses and both with high expectations heading into the season.

Didn’t you say the center who just scores down low is a dinosaur who isn’t effective in the modern game? No. I think a center whose primary game is a back to the basket post type player is largely antiquated. Or the strategy of throwing the ball to the center and letting him go to work. But there’s always a room for a good center who can score at the rim. Of course, if that same center can also shoot threes, that’s even better.

Getting back to tonight's game. Obviously we have major problems with our front court. So what do you want to see us do about it tonight? My only thought is we somehow have to figure out how to involve Motumbo more. If that means playing a lot more zone defense with Ryan in the middle of a 2-3 zone at least until Rutgers shows they can shoot over it. No way we can win this game, or possibly avoid a blowout, if we are dominated on the boards the way we were against HC. Hey, I hear Cooley and others that maybe we just need to man-up and play harder but this structural weakness will only become more obvious as the year goes on. Granted nothing Cooley does will make us a 20 win team but it could avoid the embarrassment of the last 5 years.

Our 3pt defense has been phenomenal the first two games. And our offensive turnover rate very low. These are two thing people were incessantly complaining about the last couple years. We need to keep that system and style that Cooley is developing.

Let's see what happens tonight against a legit D1 team.

There was a Twitter pic (I believe from a visting HS school) from a recent Hoyas practice where we were in a 1-3-1 zone. I'd guess we use Mutombo in the middle of a 1-3-1 zone more than a 2-3 just because the 1-3-1 is more likely to be able to defend 3-pointers. After watching Purdue-Xavier the other night, my hope is our staff would be able to take notes on how Purdue uses Edey on defense, so that they could employ Mutombo in a similar way. Edey is not quicker/more mobile than Mutombo.

This is a very winnable game for the Hoyas. Rutgers is KenPom #72, right behind a Wake Forest team (#71) that Epps lit up in a scrimmage and ahead of a St. John's team (#74) that a lot of people on this board think is garbage.
While Rutgers has some size, it's not clear that the size it has is any good. Best player is probably freshman Gavin Griffiths. Coach Pikiell has never won anything of note and should be no match for Coach Cooley. I predicted a Hoyas 8-point victory but feels like it could be even more than that.

It's just dumb.
"I can make nonsense generalizations because of these KenPom rankings..."
"But don't look at our terrible KenPom ranking. It's got nothing to do with anything. This is a very winnable game..."

Cliff Omoruyi is averaging almost 4 offensive boards per game, Gtown has to keep a body(or two) on him.
