Well, Holy Cross mirrors Georgetown in number of NCAA championships, and an NIT win to boot. They seem long ago for both. Sigh.

When was the last time we had a Saturday night game at Cap One? I can’t even recall one during the Ewing era, but I’m probably trying to block out as much of that run as possible.

HC shot 50% (10-20) from 3. I would like to see Cooley’s perimeter defense limit HC to under 30%. IIRC, good three point defenses do it less by reducing shooting % and more by reducing shots, because teams don't tend to take a ton of contested threes. So I'd take 35-40% and only 15 shots as well. Both are important, but there’s no way to stop a Rice-type, long-range shot. Shooters goin’ shoot. But, that’s a low-percentage shot. Just force the other team to take bad shots (and get ready for the long rebound to prevent an offensive rebound).

There were some McDonough ones in the COVID year, but those don't count since there were no fans (and it wasn't at Capital One). As far as I can tell, the last Saturday night game was March 2, 2019, at 6:30 pm against Seton Hall. Earlier that season we played Central Connecticut at 6 pm on a Saturday. For 8 pm, you need to go back to January 30, 2016 against Providence.

Amazing - I know its out of their hands, with Wiz, Caps and other events taking precedence, but hopefully they are watching stuff like this when scheduling, and aiming to shoehorn as many Sat night home games as possible. I bet this Holy Cross games gets one of the better crowds of the last 8 years or so, with the Cooley effect and the Saturday night time slot.

As an old timer, I'm very happy to see the Total Losses back on the schedule, even if it's only a one off. Holy Cross was a regular opponent while I was at GU. Unfortunately (well, sort of) I will miss the game Saturday, as I'm attending a 50th anniversary party.

drq - be sure to get that prediction in the HC prediction thread so it counts. Looks like it could be a good one.

That article mentions a few pertinent facts about that game but leaves out a few others: (1) was a big-deal-at-the-time regional tv game, (2) was our second rout of HC that season— beat them by 14 innthr Holiday Festival in the Garden when HC was a Top ten team, and (3) great bedsheet sign in one end zone “Nail the Loss on the Cross” (complete with a Spraypainted Cross). Fails to mention the game started at like 4pm and doors opened at noon with 25 cent 20 ounce beers for sale. Played golf with Esherick a while ago before his head coaching stint (quite the stick BTW/finished on the runner-up team in our 45th reunion alumni outing), and he said most of what he remembers of the game is that when the team came out for warm ups the stands were packed and in fans were in, uh, a VERY good/rowdy mood already.... Ah, those were the days. Finished undefeated at home on the year with the win, on the heels of two epic one point comeback wins earlier that month (1) over Detroit (with three future NBA players), which had the nation’s longest win streak of 13-14 games at the time, and (2) an OT win over GW earlier that week after Esherick tied it with about a 40 footer at the buzzer. Sadly the day after the HC win we spit the bit at Fordham to blow any real chance of an ncaa bid and then were routed by VCU at Smith Center in the ECAC South game (star Derrick Jackson couldn’t play because an ulcer acted up) that could’ve provided a path to an automatic bid had we won and then beaten the winner of the ECAC North game (as we did in ‘75 and ‘76). My wife hates that this stuff I remember and yet other “more important” things are totally lost in time…

Esherick hit that shot right in front of my spot at the scorers table.

The dunk by Sky to foul out one of their two stud forwards (Tyler?) one of my all-time memories and one of Sky's all-time plays. And not to be disagreeable, Mods, but Vitale actually had moved to the AD position by the time of our game/Gaines was their head coach at the time (but Dicie V. may well have been still stalking around the sidelines in those plaid pants...) static.detroittitans.com/custompages/MBB/History/All-Time%20Coaching%20Records.pdfJust had to visit my HoyaDen to confirm it was Tyler that Sky fouled out AND it was JT's 100th career win. Quite the night...

They small it said on pre game discussion, so that means we need to get it inside to cook. And everyone needs to help rebound. And make them drive don’t let them shoot 3s make them drive as much as we can. And play together and tough defense. Go Hoyas.
