Tell this to the HC who spent the day rehashing why he left PC & his love for the school and the city of Providence instead of focusing on his current team The 1st question asked by Dauster yesterday was "How does it feel to be in DC, different huh?" Cooley answers by saying he misses the beach and the Italian food on Federal Hill. Cooley told reporters yesterday that if he ever reached HOF status(hope he does!!) he'd go in as a Friar. Can't expect Friar fans to stop talking about it if their ex coach won't... This is a really poor take in my unsolicited opinion. Hes trying to cool the tension by showing love to his hometown team/city that he coached back to prominence. It was pretty obvious the intent of Dausters question was about the difference between Providence, RI and DC. It's the first media gathering since the change. The first time English/Cooley at same spot. What did you expect? You have a lot of cache built up with me Etomic over the years on this board, as someone reasonable and knowledgeable, but you seem to have a hard on for anything EC does or doesn't do. Is that a symptom of wanting Pitino (no idea of you did or didnt)? Just seems odd to pick apart every little thing this man does before he's even coached a game for Hoyas. We all know he's not going to ease the tensions with anything he has to say right now. It doesn't matter what Dauster's intent was in my opinion Cooley could have answered the question any way he liked without talking about Providence. I fully expected reporters to ask him PC questions but again he didn't have to engage as much as he did or even at all. I posted when Cooley was hired that I had zero worries about him as a coach. I've followed his career as closely as anyone on this board mainly because I'm good friends with a few PC fans so I know he'll do a good job coaching-wise. Where I was excited about the hire is that I thought he'd really bring it much more out in the open and that he'd be much more engaging with the media similar to how he was at PC. It's not about Pitino at all, I never believed for a second he wanted to come to Gtown but I did feel like Cooley would take the same approach Pitino has in bringing attention to St. John's. I don't get on him about everything either, as I stated to another poster recently I'm very specific & vocal about my criticisms. You've never read me getting on him about the roster(except not posting it in real time) or scheduling or recruiting. P.S. - Part of the reason this topic drives me a little nuts is the fact that Ed Cooley is just as charismatic, engaging or entertaining as Smart or Pitino or any coach in CBB. Utilize that part of him to the fullest.

"On Tuesday morning, Cooley and new Providence head coach Kim English could be seen catching up and talking casually as Big East commissioner Val Ackerman delivered opening remarks. English has joked before that he’s the only one left in Cooley’s hometown that still likes him, as tension will always be present between the ex-Friars coach and the Providence community... "I can feel the anger and I get it," Cooley said of the Friar community and fan base. "But in our world, change is OK. I don’t think we should be villainized or victimized. Change is OK. But I’ll always be from the state of Rhode Island. I’ll always be a kid from Providence, and I’ll always cheer for Providence College. "If I’m ever fortunate enough to get to a Hall of Fame level, it will be an easy decision of what I go in as. Providence College gave me an incredible opportunity. I totally understand the anger from fans, and I’ll internalize that, but until all of them sit in my seat and understand how important change is, I can go to bed at night knowing that." www.foxsports.com/stories/college-basketball/big-east-media-day-rick-pitinos-vision-ed-cooleys-big-move-uconn-disrespected?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Utilize that part of him to the fullest. Cooley has done this at every stop (granted the social media/NIL/Portal evolution over time has changed/heightened/expedited expectations). He first tempers expectations in lead up to year 1. There's nothing to crow about when your team is expected to finish bottom half of league. Talk culture and future. Then he engages the students and donor class first and foremost. We've seen it from his alumni reach outs, HHC presence, targeted high level donor events in DC, NYC, SF and LA, and presence at freshman orientation, student center, dunk tank, meet and greet, etc. Then when the team is on the rise in year 2 or 3, he goes full media blitz. And uses those foundations from year 1 as the catalyst to a wider audience and interest right in time for the improved on court product. Now, if one is in the camp that those timelines should be expedited in the NIL/portal era - to me that's completely fair. I don't necessarily agree or think it realistic considering where Gtown bball was at vs. a St. Johns - but it's reasonable. But at the end of the day EC has proven that he has a model that works. For me, as much as I want immediate success after the last decade, seeing him institute those same steps is good enough for me.

I love this from Cooley: “I’m not apologizing for taking care of my life. End of discussion." Did he actually say this? If so, not exactly putting an end to the speculation from Providence fans on what drove his departure... There was a lot of talk just before he was hired that his daughter loved DC and planned to make it her home. As a geezer grandparent as I am, the draw to be near your adult kids and your grandchildren is very, very strong. Like you, I do not like the way he was poached, nor did I like the fact that he wanted to be poached. But when it comes to family, he is saying "end of discussion".

For me, as much as I want immediate success after the last decade, seeing him institute those same steps is good enough for me. One of the most fair and reasonable posts on this board in a long time - bravo! I am certainly one that believes the model Cooley used in his first year at Fairfield in 2006 or Providence in 2011 should not apply to Georgetown in 2023. NIL has completely changed the game and you'd think with his current stature and the resources at Georgetown, he'd be able to be farther along than he was Year 1 at those other places. Plus, it sickens me knowing that our athletic department is spending $10M on head basketball coaches this year - $4M on an incompetent to go away and $6M on his competent replacement, but the replacement hasn't built a roster that's likely to be competitive. And that first year roster is entirely on Cooley, including the completely unforced error of not having enough scholarship players to mitigate any injuries that might occur. It's pretty clear that Cooley thought he'd do better in the portal this past offseason and now the narrative is, "well, just wait until Year 2 when we have all this portal money to spend and we bring in Sorber/Mulready."

In one interview Cooley did sometime since March (it all blurs together now), Cooley was very explicit in saying that his daughter wanted to stay in DC after graduating and wanted to live in a city more diverse than Providence. Now, was that the only reason? Probably not, but I know being near your kids--especially as you get older--is a draw for a lot of parents. I am sure there are other reasons too. I know what you are alluding to, but I am not going to go there. Humans are not perfect, and college basketball coaches especially, are not perfect.

Getting back to Cooley's comments on Fielder, I find them fascinating and revealing. Other fanbases would have ran with them, debated over all of it and made them a topic of discussion. This board though just doesn't care and that's largely because people here want to focus exclusively on the negative (and will probably defend this on the basis of the talking points about how the program is a model of negativity). There are people typing stuff about how they aren't excited not only for just this year but for what they see in the team's prospects for next season too. More people are interested in having a conversation about how the media is justified in its single-minded focus of Cooley and Providence. Interesting conversations can come from that, but there's more than just that we can talk about, right? What about actual basketball talk? People, people, people… Regarding the Fanta et al. interview, that really wasn’t an in-depth interview. For example, there was not much on the players. It was basically the same questions made to an experienced coach with a new job and a juicy storyline, in a very familiar setting and towards the end of the show. The only part of the interview that mentioned actual basketball (players, schemes, etc…) just touched lightly on Jayden, Drew and Cook. For example, they asked Cooley about Cook and he said Cook is improving, and then playfully made fun of Cook’s deep voice. We would love a player breakdown by Cooley, but he hasn’t done such an interview. I disagree that we haven’t talked about basketball. There’s just not a lot of material out there on this year’s roster given the smallest roster in college basketball, three returning players who the coach hasn’t mentioned in interviews other than in that summer interview, three players who haven’t played college basketball, and three players with different college basketball experiences. For example, how much is out there re: Dontrez? What kind of player do we have? I hope to hear a detailed analysis by Cooley on how Dontrez helps the team, etc… Regarding Drew, we’ve covered him extensively for a frosh player with little info out there and everyone here is hopeful. IMO, given the number of minutes he will have to play, Drew will be a potential BE All-Freshmen Team. Btw, I said the same for Denver last year, so take that with a grain of salt. Surprisingly, no one asked him about why does he only have 9 scholarship players in a killer league like the BE. I don’t know if that fits your idea of “basketball talk”, but that’s the biggest story of this year’s team. The good news is that while those in the media didn't pose the question about the low number of scholarship players on the roster, peo...uh, I mean individuals on this board, have actually been very forthcoming with their concerns and inquiries on that subject. So, yes, that is a basketball topic, one in which we run with when the subject arises

There's also no world where salacious social media / message board fodder with no attribution or confirmation should be taken as legitimate. We live in a world where people will do gymnastics and contortions to reach the conclusions that fit their agenda. Wouldn't a much more likely scenario be that his wife was an empty nester. Ed was working long hours. And the ability to live in a city with their daughter, leave their hometown bubble, and value a later in life change of scenery be much more logical and likely?

His wife wanted to live in a more cosmopolitan city as well and people think that was a major driving force, much more so than his daughter I believe. Of course Providence fans, with no evidence to back up anything, have claimed that the wife angle was a cover story, that he was apparently trying to appease her and make things up to her for his cheating on her with a mistress. According to some of the Friars faithful it was an open secret that Cooley had a mistress and they think he is a dirtbag for this. Only thing is if it was an open secret why did they only now denounce him after he left Providence and why hasn't his affair actually been reported on by the Rhode Island or New England media? This may be the "personal life" stuff hoyaboya was referring to. It still all remains unsubstantiated.

With all said here, to me the really good word is that he is ours right now as opposed to the promise presenting at this time of year for the last two years. It may take some time, but I sure like his attitude and approach to coaching compared to his predecessor.

Put the PC gossip columnists off to one side and leave them there.
Like all coaches, Ed Cooley has an ego and he wasn't getting to a Final Four at PC, especially with the rise of Dan Hurley 50 miles to the west. But he was looking to places where he could get to that level. There's no accident when the online CBB press publishes certain names as "candidates" for jobs and others never get mentioned--the latter are either uninterested, unavailable, or unremarkable. Others always seemed to be in the mix: names like Bruce Pearl, Nate Oats, Buzz Williams, Dennis Gates, etc. By contrast, Jay Wright or Mike Krzyzewski weren't shopping around and they let that be known, but Cooley was regularly linked to various high-profile jobs.
Remember, Cooley was in strong consideration for the Michigan job that went to Juwan Howard in 2019, which he described as "really hard" to turn down. "Very, very hard,” Cooley said. “And there are some changes being made at Providence College, good changes, tough changes, what we’ve seen with the school and how it’s really grown." (Read= new practice facility.) He was on a shortlist for the Maryland job in 2022 that went to Kevin Willard and was offered a multi-year extension by PC in return.
What changed? Rev. Shanley was was renewed for a fourth term as PC president in 2019 and the Dominican superior overruled it, forcing Shanley to step down, where he later left for St. John's (a non-O.P. school) in 2021. A new AD at Providence followed in 2022. Coaches have a track record of getting nervous when their allies depart a university, recalling John Thompson's close call with the Denver Nuggets after Tim Healy left, or when Dean Smith resigned months after president C.D. Spangler and AD John Swofford both left Carolina.

I fully get what you're saying here but as you noted times have changed. To me, it isn't about heightened expectations but about heightened anticipation, Fans want to see the sausage being made now. I understand that the team doesn't appear to be a contender this season but I still want to hear everything the staff is working on with the players, what their strengths & weaknesses are, where they've shown improvement & where they've stagnated or regressed ect. That's basically all coaches like Smart, Pitino, McDermott, Hurley, Holloway etc.. do, truth be told. Do you really believe Seton Hall fans have unrealistic expectations due to Holloway talking about the improvements players like Richmond, Davis, or Sanders have made in the offseason? Or proclaiming that SH has the best back-court in the conference. Imagine the posts MCI would produce about Fielder if we heard where he's made strides since getting to the Hilltop. In my view, there's little value in worrying about managing fan expectations when the sport is as fluid as it is these days

Here's what he had to say about the administrators at PC yesterday which is consistent with what he's said prior about them. He says PC is "elite with alignment" after naming all the administrators he worked with over his time there. I hope Gtown can attain this elite alignment sooner rather than later.

EC got more money and a better and bigger platform at which to seek national success, acclaim, etc. GU is clearly a better job than PC, at least in theory.
It sounds like EC talked too much about Providence at Media Day.

"I'll always be a kid from Providence," Cooley said. "I miss the beaches. I miss the clam chowder down there. I miss the people. But at the same time, what I don't miss is not giving myself an opportunity to experience change. I think all of us have changed in our life, it's just I'm under more scrutiny because of the narrative."... Cooley conceded that, had he chosen a new outpost somewhere like Texas, it might have been less difficult for fans than this intraconference flip. "I can feel the anger and I get it. I understand it. I can internalize that," Cooley said. "But in our world, change is OK. I don't think you should be villainized or victimized."... "In the back of my mind, I always hear Coach Thompson saying, ‘Do something different every now and then. Do something different that'll shock the world,'" Cooley said. "‘Make sure you take care of your own soul.'" bismarcktribune.com/sports/college/ed-cooley-confident-georgetown-move-was-right-one/article_60ea4ceb-1e8f-5637-99b5-d9b9040a2c83.html

This Big East Vault interview with Jeff Battle was fantastic - he ran down a lot of the players on the team : Yes! And no mention of Providence! I do think it is interesting that Cooley gives his assistants free rein to do interviews and media. I have no idea what other programs or teams do, but I cannot remember any interviews by Georgetown assistants in the modern era, either under JT3 or Ewing. (Maybe there were some here and there, but I really do not remember any--if they did occur they were rare.) Based on comments that some of the assistants have made, it sounds like Cooley delegates a lot of responsibility, and given how long they have all been together, Cooley surely trusts them. Again, I have no idea if assistants being out in the media is common or not since Georgetown never did it, but I do think it is a very notable change of approach from the Thompson-style of communications that came before Cooley.

“What makes this harder on everybody is I stayed within the league,” Cooley said. “But it’s the Big East that I love, what I was born and raised in. That’s not something I’m going to apologize for. I’m not apologizing for taking care of my life. End of discussion.”... “I want people to embrace the coach they have,” Cooley said of English. “They have a fantastic young coach who will do great things.” While English is appreciative of everything Cooley did to build the program — and might be the only one in the city who was happy to see Cooley leave — much of the fan base isn’t yet able to forgive Cooley. The fans view Georgetown as a significant step down due to its struggles over the past decade, especially since former Hoyas great Patrick Ewing couldn’t turn things around. But the reality is that most coaches in college basketball, and nearly all who work in the Big East, would prefer the Georgetown job if given the choice. “Georgetown has a much higher upside,” said one veteran Big East assistant. “Just because it’s been terrible lately doesn’t mean it’s not a better job. Providence hired the right guy 10 years ago and Georgetown hasn’t had the right people running the program.”... “It’s just a matter of time,” Cooley said of getting the Hoyas back into one of the top spots in the league. “I could give two s--- - about legacy. I’m not here for legacy. I’m here to win, I’m here to graduate young people and I’m here to make change.” themessenger.com/sports/ed-cooley-georgetown-mens-basketball-providence-big-east
