It seems clear that in addition to, oh, the entire Israeli leadership and security apparatus, the various pro-Palestinian groups around the world were also caught off guard by Hamas's attack and specifically the scale of the civilian slaughter and hostage-taking.
As a result, many - including various SJP branches - are going off of a 'playbook' (more mental than written) calibrated for violence directed toward the IDF, etc., which is both routinized (as it is with Hezbollah in the north) and more broadly seen globally as either outright legitimate or at least much more defensible.
The disconnect between the two has been sufficiently stark that we've been treated to - get this - the prospect of Hamas officials claiming that the hostage-taking *runs counter to their principles* and was executed by other Gazans:
How much of this tension will survive the coming days and weeks, when there is a general expectation that Israel will kill tens of thousands of Gazan civilians as Bibi, et. al. try to salvage their legacy through 'overcorrection,' I do not know. But it may, if nothing else, shatter the increasing videogamification of conflict within the West.

Why aren’t articles fully loading on this site any longer, just remain as links? If you mean for Twitter/X, it's because the whole name and domain change thing was rashly and hastily thrown together, so things shared from "X" (especially the web browser version) don't always integrate with ProBoards and other plugins properly. |
