On shot selection, I think we should expect to see a pretty big change from Georgetown. This was the number of FG attempts by % by area on the Court last year for Georgetown and Providence. To be clear this is ATTEMPTS, it is not field goal percentage:
Providence:
Rim: 35.3% Paint: 20.1% Mid/Long Twos: 12.8% Corner 3's: 7.9% Other Threes: 23.4%
Georgetown:
Rim: 24.5% Paint: 19.8%% Mid/Long Twos: 24.8% Corner 3's: 8.7% Other Threes: 21.9%
In all of D-1, the average shots taken Mid/Long range is 13.4%.
As you can see, the biggest difference is Georgetown took a LOT of long-range/mid-range twos, Providence did not. And Providence took a lot more high-percentage shots at the rim compared to us. Fixing that shot selection alone with nothing else different will give our offense a big boost.

If you haven't seen these photos from the Blue-Gray scrimmage, check them out! Great shots and it looks like they were playing pretty hard. Loving Ryan snuffing shots and the oft-ignored walk-ons. What role will they (Bacote, Donovan, Montgomery, Kazor, Asadallah) play, esp. if we have injuries but also off the bench? If Cooley is good at creating a team culture that renders on-court performance that is more than the sum of its parts, we are going to at best surprise some teams and people, and at worst not be boring. georgetown.rivals.com/news/intersquad-scrimmage-shots

Or, said another way, take half our long 2s from last year and make them layups and see if the team isn't better. That's a huge difference.

Not that we didn't already know this, but it comes as no surprise that last year we took way more than the average of the worst shots in college basketball.

Seeing Wake getting destroyed by Elon 1st game is not confidence inducing. Although seeing Pitt beat up on a HBCU is.

A few things I will be looking for in the first few games this week:
1. How does Fielder hold up in the interior against weaker competition? I think everyone is going to be very pleasantly surprised with the offensive repertoire the kid has, as well as his motor. But he's not overly physical, or quick twitch, and his motor can get him into foul trouble at times. Can he hang on the boards? Get a few put backs? Guard the block? Have a low post game? The ceiling is extremely high long term but he's likely a day 1 starter, and this year's team needs him to play to his size quickly.
2. Speaking of foul trouble - what happens when we have a big man in foul trouble and another needs a blow. There's a 3 man rotation at the 4/5 until Massoud comes back (Fielder, Cook, Mutombo - and Ryan obviously can't play the 4). A time will come when we will need someone to play the 4 out of position. Will it be Styles? Bristol? Is that when the 1-3-1 gets pulled out?
3. Will Bacote have a role on this team? I think the answer is yes. Bacote has a Terrell Allen vibe to his game. Control tempo. And with Massoud out he's the "old head" veteran. If we're in a bogged down low scoring half court game at some point, I could see Bacote being a key piece.
4. Where is Rowans game? He hasent played competitive basketball in 2 years. Practices and Kenner aren't the same thing. Will it take him a while to shake off the rust and let the game slow down? Rowan plays fast and when he's in rhythm and seeing the court he's a joy to watch. Hes essentially a Freshman, how quickly can he get comfortable leading a team?
5. BEAT. THE. CUPCAKES. It won't take much to move this program in a positive direction, but step 1 is beating who you're supposed to even when you're not a great team. If the Hoyas went 8-3 in OOC by going 1-3 vs. ND, Rutgers, TCU, Syracuse - that would be a success to most. Can Cooley avoid the air out of the balloon loss to American or Mt. St Mary's or Dartmouth (I know they're not our schedule this year)? And now for s and giggles...steal 1 at a mediocre Rutgers team, beat the cupcakes and you're 7-0 heading into TCU...

I think the long two's will end up being threes this year I hope that Cook can play a similar role to Ed Croswell but unfortunately, there isn't anyone on the roster who plays similarly to Hopkins. The strength of the Hoyas is in the back-court & wings, it'll be interesting to see how the staff handles a roster makeup that they haven't had in a long while if ever.

Solid read. Https://theathletic.com/5025551/2023/11/07/ed-cooley-georgetown-hoyas?source=user-shared-article"In seven months, Georgetown basketball has essentially gone from impossible-to-find Waldo to Taylor Swift at a Chiefs game. Since March, Cooley has appeared on more than 100 Zooms, visited alums in New York City, San Francisco and Martha’s Vineyard. He’s shown up in the classroom, at a lacrosse doubleheader and outside the dorms on move-in day. In a town known for glad-handing, baby-kissing and stumping, Cooley is extreme. After finishing an interview, he is off to meet with the vice president of student affairs and the next day is taking his team to Capitol Hill."

It also explains why Georgetown hired Mark Fox to head up NIL. Cooley and Fox are longtime friends.

As we've seen for decades at Gtown "friendship" is not a good reason to hire someone, especially to an important spot.
