All the talk about guys who will make or break the Hoyas this year seem to forget about Motumbo. To be honest I was never impressed by his game but I can't believe you have a junior 4 start recruit on your squad and he seems to be an afterthought when folks talk about this year's team. I've posted this before but while I doubt he will contribute much on offense I have to believe that he could become a defensive presence under the boards. Even in just 5-10 minute spurts, especially if we start playing 2-3 zone defense with him in the middle. Blame last year’s staff for the lack of Ryan talk this year. That said, there’s nowhere to hide this year. He’ll have to play a lot!!!

1 Sweet Sixteen in 17 years as a Division I head coach - 0 Final Fours, 0 Elite Eights. He talks about taking us to the mountaintop. He's never been there. It's irrefutable. Including the Fairfield years among the 17 years above is silly. No modern head coach has made the Sweet 16 from Fairfield given its conference. So that's really irrelevant. My sense is that Cooley likely thought that Providence created structural obstacles to reach the heights he'd like to reach and that Georgetown provided a better platform for doing that. Outside of Providence alumni/fans, nearly everyone agrees Georgetown is the higher profile job and Georgetown has plenty of resources. As I have said before, Cooley had a pretty good gig in Providence. Beloved by the city, fans, alumni, students. In 2022, Ed Cooley made $3,633,128 million (source: Providence's 2022 Form 990) at Providence, and had he stayed he likely would have earned more. Not only that but Cooley is 54 years old and could have probably stayed at Providence another 10+ years making likely over $4 million or more per year. Is $5 million a lot more to Cooley? Maybe, maybe not, but I am pretty confident that $1 or $1.5 million raise is not what caused Cooley to leave. I think he thought Georgetown would allow him greater resources and success. At this point, the idea that Cooley left Providence for Georgetown for the money is really a tired and silly argument. Particularly given that Cooley essentially had tenure at Providence and was unlikely to get fired. In the last ten years, Georgetown fired a coach who was John Thompson's son and made it to a Final Four, and its biggest player star. If Ed Cooley doesn't get it done, he could end up in the same place, and he knows it. That's why I say his move likely is not driven by the money. The safe, easy way out for Cooley would have been to stay at Providence and collect millions for the next decade-plus. My bad, I fed the trolls. COY apparently doesn’t mean you can coach and taking a mid-major Provy program from 4 wins to consistent contender in the BEast means less. He is unproven and all the accolades and industry respect doesn’t mean nearly as much as the boyopinion. Bow down to his Authoriteye

"WHICH TEAM EXPECTED TO FLOP DO YOU THINK MIGHT SURPRISE THIS SEASON? “It depends on what we mean by “surprise” here, but I could see Georgetown being better than expected. Is this pick partly rooted in the fact that it would be difficult to get worse than the last two seasons? Sure, but the Hoyas have a favorable non-conference schedule that could allow a team with a bunch of new pieces to start to click and build confidence before Big East play. Will Georgetown contend to win the league in Ed Cooley’s first season? Of course not, but an experienced roster highlighted by returning starter Jay Heath (12 PPG last year), touted freshman Drew Fielder and talented Texas transfer Rowan Brumbaugh provide some level of promise. I realize the Hoyas are an extreme long-shot pick to fight for a tournament berth, but I had to make up for my chalk national title choice somehow.” – Cassidy" basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/rivals-roundtable-title-picks-big-matchups-surprises-in-college-hoops

Very good interview, definitely the Ed Cooley I've been waiting to hear from these last few months. Still can't understand why he doesn't do this more often given how good he is in these settings. No one is expecting 18-2 ever. I believe what most fans want is to feel a part of the process he spoke of, that was the trick at PC and it could work at Gtown as well I was hoping someone would follow up to ask what Lee Reed has actually helped with, and what rough waters has he helped to navigate. Having said that I'm looking forward to seeing the team & how they play this year... I'm not so sure he was talking about 18 BE wins. It definitely feels like there is expectation setting here, and I get it. I think we have like half a quality team right now in terms of depth. Cooley is right though -- he's built up everywhere he's been and he will do that here, unless the NIL dynamics are so bad we are done, period. The question with Cooley, I think, will come once we are decent again -- was he the block at Providence or was talent? But for now, I just want a well coached team. Cooley's answer to playing style was my favorite part of the presser(4:18 mark). He stated that they'll play a "winning" style which will consist of being very connected, disciplined, physical, and engaged. Cooley stated those are all "winning" traits of teams he's had but he doesn't know how it'll go because many of the kids have never played in the roles they'll be asked to take on this season. Imho he's setting the bar of expectations for the team to play winning basketball not to win games, I love that. That's the message to push, fans will get behind a team that tries. Let's be honest after what we've witnessed over the last 2 seasons if we see a well-coached team this season, Cooley will be Lazurus to a lot of us whether they win 6 games in the BE or not, myself included.

I would love to win at all costs, but in the growth portion of the Hoyas getting back into I would love to see them play very solid offense with good screening, off ball play, lack of mental mistakes, good spacing, etc. In other words, to see the results of good teaching/coaching. Similarly, defensively to see good help D, nice blocking out in the box, good boarding, and not getting beat in the breaks....
With that start the rest will come---the players to play for Cooley and G'town, the wins (albeit gradually), the fans to present a good HC advantage. For those lacking patience, I have few words.

BTW, my one joy this year I hope will be not seeing Wahab chasing guys 15+ feet from the basket and then having them blow by him. To my eyes, Mutombo has shown a lot more on offense to date than he has shown on defense. He has a nice touch and shown to score baskets in bunches. He seemed challenged to hang in there on defense.

O.K., I want to share some perspective on whether we should be optimistic or pessimistic about the season ahead (& in life in general). Just heard this today, and it's given me a lot to chew on.
If you're a pessimist all the time and you get down to the end (of the season, of your life) and find out you were wrong, you basically screwed up your whole season/life.
If you're an optimist all the time and you arrive at the end and find out you were wrong, you only screwed up one day.
You know where I'm leaning, not only because of this little gem of wisdom but also because it's just a much more fun and enjoyable way to be whether it's the next 5 months or 50 years.
3 days and change, Hoya brothers and sisters. There's a lot to be hopeful about -- cheer loud and have fun -- Hoya Saxa!!!!

Haven't posted in a while. Wanted to let the stink of the past few seasons wear off and not get bogged down by people rehashing the past. We are "here" now and the program is being run by a proven competent staff. Things won't go from where they were to "great" overnight....it will take time. The Massoud injury was really unfortunate, but hopefully he'll be back for the BE season. I'm hoping for no huge upset losses and maybe one upset of our own in the early games....followed by a BE season with at least an 8th place finish. With the small roster we have, that seems about all we can expect. Maybe we are surprised, but while I agree with bluegray79 above that optimism is the way to go.....a little realism needs to be in there as well. Looking forward to watching the games this year, learning all the new players and getting more excited for the future as the season goes on!

(meant to post this here - sorry for the repeat post)
While approaching the season with healthy optimism, I'm not going to get my hopes way up. It's year 1 after too many down years. We will by turns take our lumps and we will surprise people. TBS, I am really excited for this season and watching this group will grow and improve. The X factors of an unknown Dontrez Styles (among several players) and how the Cooley Effect of playing hard-nosed basketball, playing together, communicating, etc. will affect play on the court and outcomes of games in ways I don't think we can reliably predict. There are enough wait and see aspects to this new era that have me not knowing who we are and how we'll play, so I remain open to the possibility of being pleased with what I see out there.
T minus 3 days and counting...

While Cooley’s long-term goal is a holistic rebuild that may not wholly materialize this season on the court, there will certainly be a difference in how the team plays this year. There’s a saying in the college basketball world that teams play like the coaches that lead them. This will be true of Georgetown under Cooley’s staff as well. “Discipline is a staple. Toughness, energy, connection, and enthusiasm. Those things will also be staples of our organization,” he said. georgetownvoice.com/2023/11/03/cooley-preaches-patience-as-he-looks-to-resurrect-the-hoyas/

from that Voice article:
Cooley ended the interview with a message for the Georgetown community, and particularly the students, on what is to come.
“It is my hope that our students give us an opportunity to grow together, to come to the games no matter who we’re playing, but cheer for what we’re doing,” he said. “Come with some energy, enthusiasm. It is our goal to try to get 4,100 students per home game. Everybody’s saying, ‘Okay, are we going to win?’ Do you win first, then be supported, or do you support and then win? I think it’s a balance of both, and playing in the number one conference in the country is going to take us some time, but I need everybody to buckle up, put their seatbelt on, and let’s go through this rocky beginning together.”
I so want to be winning sooner than later, but I know that I/we need to keep our eyes on the prize (sorry) and enjoy the journey that gets us to where we want to be. It's happening, starting now, but it will take weeks and months and a few years of growing and picking up the pieces that make us better year to year, and morphing into a genuine, formidable team. Before you know it -- but not anytime real soon -- we will be something to witness. Can't wait. But have to.
Hoya Saxa.

How far from that can you “flop”? Idiots. With flop in the title I at least expected it to be about Duke.
