In the news: Language majors getting chopped at West Virginia. "E. Gordon Gee, president since 2014, said he would not ask the state’s Republican legislative leaders for a bailout. He said his strategy is to make tough decisions now and ask lawmakers later for support. Gee describes himself as a fan of foreign language proficiency and recently told The Washington Post that he speaks German and Italian. But he said universities must adapt to declining student demand for foreign language majors. “We’ll break the dam,” he said, “and a lot of people will follow us.” www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/08/29/west-virginia-university-cuts-foreign-languagesWhile WVU's situation is not analogous to Georgetown, he is correct: foreign language majors are in decline nationally, even at GU.

E. Gordon Gee is at WVU now? Seems like a step down from Ohio State. Gee left OSU in 2013: COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State president Gordon Gee abruptly announced his retirement Tuesday after he came under fire for jokingly referring to "those damn Catholics" at Notre Dame and poking fun at the academic quality of other schools. Ohio State called his words unacceptable and said it had placed Gee on a "remediation plan" to change his behavior. Gee, 69, said in a teleconference that the furor was only part of his decision to retire, which he said he had been considering for a while. He said his age and the start of a long-term planning process at the university were also factors. www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/9342172/ohio-state-gordon-gee-retire-wake-controversyGee has a long history of making controversial comments. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Gordon_Gee
