Preseason regional rankings.
For the men:
Defending regional champion Villanova starts the season at No. 1 with last year’s third-place squad Princeton at No. 2. Both the Wildcats and Tigers lost key pieces from those 2022 squads, but are said to have replenished the cupboard with both transfers and their freshman classes.
No. 3 Georgetown, No. 4 Pittsburgh and No. 5 La Salle round out the top-5 teams. This matches the best park in program history for the Panthers and is the Explorers’ best ranking since 2013.
For the women:
The third time’s the charm as Georgetown and West Virginia return to the grass the favorites for the two automatic bids to NCAAs. Georgetown, returning five women from the top-15 at last year’s NCAA Championships, look poised to keep their crown. The West Virginia Mountaineers will once again be led by their steadfast low-stick All-American Ceili McCabe.
Penn, Penn State, and Princeton take the third, fourth, and fifth respective spots.

This must mean the NCAA Regional Champs.

In the national pre-season poll, the men were in the category of receiving votes (10 points), so they are effectively #35.
The women garnered 220 votes, which places them in 11th place in a tie with UVA.

One of our new recruits, Birhanu Harriman was one of the few incoming freshmen, who traveled to Flagstaff to join the team for altitude training. Birhanu held his ground against the older members of the team right off the bat, while they had had the chance to acclimatize themselves. Originally from Ethiopia, he was adopted when he came to the states. He is a good student and is just beginning to show what he can do in running. www.vnews.com/Birhanu-Harriman-commits-to-Georgetown-49415228

The men will run 6K, while the women 4K. As usual for the first meet not all the top runners will not be running tomorrow. For the men most of the runners will be the redshirt freshmen (academic class sophomore). The women will be running at least three transfers and one real freshman.

The women and the UVA women are both ranked 11th. Of course, the Hoyas ran their B team. Natalie McLean as a freshman ran a good race. Tbe Darthmouth grad tramsfer. Hirschfeld ran a decent race, and Hennelly seems to be back to her previous form.

I get that the 2-6-14-15-22 is the position of our top 5 runners but what do the 59 up front, (25) and the end and the two times mean? Looks like most teams have two numbers in parenthesis but GU only on - what does that mean? I've got a freshman in high school that (inexplicably) is running cross country quite well (#1 frosh time in the school, one one sophomore (on varsity) running faster, just ran his first real invitation and finished 6th in a 360 kid frosh/soph race). No clue where he'll go with this but trying to understand this sport (I'm a soccer and tennis guy, so never paid attention to how scoring works on xc). Thanks!

Add the 5 places that the Hoyas came in and you get 59.

Yes as RG explained the scoring (low score wins) goes 2+6+14+15+22=59. The (25) is the place of the 6th man. Every team can have seven runners that can either score or displace another team. So the 6th man did not count in the score of 59. Now it gets a bit more complicated. For example, look at the individual runners for us:
2 GUERRA, Lucas SO 121 Georgetown 2 17:59.8 6 NORTH, Charlie FR 123 Georgetown 6 18:05.3 15 ONDRACEK, Luke FR 124 Georgetown 14 18:27.1 16 ALTHOUSE, Mateo SO 119 Georgetown 15 18:27.2 26 BARNA, Jackson FR 120 Georgetown 22 18:44.8 30 LAKEMAN, Caleb FR 122 Georgetown (25) 18:51.5
The score on the left is the actually placing of our runners in the race. Add up those number and you get 65. But the actual scoring for the meet is the number after Georgetown. This score contributes to the actual team scoring; the difference, in this case, is that Virginia had 8 runners before our third, fourth, and fifth man, plus two runners were running unattached and they didn't enter in the scoring. There was a 9th UVA runner also ahead of our sixth man. Take out the unattached runners and Virginia's extra men (over 7) and you get our 59 points.

Cincyhoya, you have to be proud of your sons/daughters (?). I coach middle school cross country, and our best runner last year is a freshman in high school, and he finished his first frosh race with 15 schools in 2nd place. So I am proud of him too. Unfortunately, he came down with an injury last week. Have to be careful out there.

And yeah, very proud of him and his efforts - really crazy to see the progress in a short amount of time. Good luck with the coaching!
