Don't think so. But I certainly heard nothing about as it a SFS '77 alum but maybe that's consistent with typical Georgetown lack of transparency. One would think it could be tied to a multimillion $$ gift. See e.g., McCourt School

For McCourt level money, renaming would make sense. Otherwise seems pretty strange—especially in light of the zero transparency to alumni.

Until you see any sort of credible quote, citation, etc. that this was/is a serious proposal, assume this is a rumor that got legs because people love drama.

It surely is strange that such a major change would be in the offing without any offical statement from the university. Unless she bequeathed the university her entire stake in Dentons or something, it's really hard to imagine this being seriously mooted. Universities do not just change the names of things, and while Fr. Walsh's rabid anti-communism no doubt strikes some as over the top and bordering on reactionary, this of all times - as Moscow inflicts violence on its neighbors - is not when he's liable to be cancelled.

This strikes me as right up Jack’s alley. Are you suggesting he's just a moron? Because I see no other way this would be up anyone's alley

Even if this was a serious proposal, this petition is pretty hilarious. It took DeGioia three years and multiple committees to rename a dorm, and they think he's going to rename a school overnight? Does she know she works at Georgetown?

The academic life has many things going for it, but the ivory tower complex is real.

Has anyone confirmed from a credible source that such a name change is actually under consideration?

This continues to baffle me. You'd think that Georgetown could attract a major donation to rename the school, if there is a desire to do so. I think everyone would understand and appreciate that. And just in general, the school needs to be careful about stripping names off of things. When a building or school or professorship is named after someone, there is the general sense that this is permanent. (I have similar concerns about knocking down Gewirz--need to make sure that donors continue to be appropriately honored.) georgetownvoice.com/2023/07/11/faculty-concerns-stall-plans-to-rename-sfs-after-madeleine-albright-spark-debate/

(I have similar concerns about knocking down Gewirz--need to make sure that donors continue to be appropriately honored.) Thoughts: 1. This appears a ham-handed effort from the start. There is no discernible reason why SFS would or should be renamed, and such offers by wealthy individuals should not be done in private. Joel Hellman knows better. 2. Madeline Albright is not an alumna and not the only secretary of DOS to have taught at Georgetown. The same concerns would be raised if someone wanted to rename it the Kissinger School, the Haig School, the Clinton School, etc. Albright's record on some international issues is a point of legitimate concern, but that's going to be the case with any recent official. In 50 years, she may be as notable and relevant as, say, Warren Christopher or Mike Pompeo. 3. The rules on naming gifts are so obtuse that a building (or school) can be named without any gift whatsoever (Harbin, Arrupe, Thompson Center) or a more sizeable one. But schools should not be for sale, and certainly not in a cloak of darkness.

Joel Hellman knows better. There's no tangible evidence this was an effort of any hand, hammy or otherwise. It's most likely a made up rumor that spread because it validates a bunch of people's priors ("Georgetown loves war criminals omg" [insert Photoshop of killer drone with rainbow Pride flag here])

What am I missing? Is this email from Dean Hellman to the Voice totally fabricated? Is the Voice story wholly false? Is this an April Fool's Edition of the Voice in July? (from hilltopper2000's link above): “For university administration, the idea to rename the school stemmed from Albright’s impact on the SFS community, her trailblazing career as the first female Secretary of State, and her deep commitment to a lifetime of public service,” SFS Dean Joel Hellman wrote in an email to the Voice. The proposal was also shared with the Georgetown Board of Directors, who indicated their support for it, an hour after it was shared with faculty. But after a number of faculty voiced concerns related to Albright’s legacy at their meeting, Hellman said SFS and University Leadership believed further consultation with SFS community members would be necessary before any further action was taken to implement the proposal.

Yeah, I'm being a bit hyperbolic. I think it was a trial balloon more than a serious, ready-to-go proposal and got blown out of proportion.

Hold on. What am I misding? Is this email from Dean Hellman to the Voice totally fabricated? Is the Voice storyiwholly false? Is this an April Fool's Edition of the Voice in July? (from hilltopper2000's link above): “For university administration, the idea to rename the school stemmed from Albright’s impact on the SFS community, her trailblazing career as the first female Secretary of State, and her deep commitment to a lifetime of public service,” SFS Dean Joel Hellman wrote in an email to the Voice. Yeah, I'm being a bit hyperbolic. I think it was a trial balloon more than a serious, ready-to-go proposal and got blown out of proportion. Renaming SFS seems so over the top to me even as a trial ballon. An Endowed Professorship in her name seems about right to me. For example, a former President of the Georgetown Band member seeded an Endowed Fund for the GU Band in honor of longtime Arts Administrator Ron Lignelli upon his retirement and we are about 40% of the way to meet our goal. The Ron Lignelli Fund was established in 2022 as an endowment fund for the GU Pep Band. The fund was founded by Rich Fiesta (GU Band Alum CAS '79 and LAW '82; former Band President). It is named after Ronald J. Lignelli, who served as the Pep Band's administrative director for 37 years, dedicating much of his career to the organization. The fund will be used to support band operations such as music, new instruments and special events, such as the recent band Centennial celebrated in April 2022. We appreciate any and all contributions! Donations can be made at the link below. www.georgetownpepband.com/donate
