Any coaches with B-more, PG/DC, Northern VA connections? Does Cooley have a track record of pulling recruits from these areas? That will be the key. I can't speak to Cooley, but see just above.

Hoping the staff isn't fully filled out yet; certainly fine with the continuity from his existing staff, but would love to see another DMV guy and/or former player in the DOBO spot. Obviously nitpicking and from all accounts the locals are happy with the Cooley hire and in general will work to thaw alot of the relationships in the area as that's the kind of guy Cooley is; but it doesn't hurt to get some additional leverage

Seems pretty random. Not sure of the connection to Cooley or the DMV. I’m assuming this is just a scouting / recruiting role. He did have 3 NBA players in his time at UGA I guess…

Oh God, please NO....MY Cal Bears just fired him. He is the opposite of Ed Cooley. Did not communicate with media, with big donors, and was an insider choice by AD Knowlton who is probably close to being fired over issues with women's swimming coach, poor attention to major sports, etc. Oh, and did I add a horrible won/loss record. Horrible. Then, if that is not enough, look at his retention of players. Anybody know where Bradley, the star of finalist SDSU, played and transferred from? Yup. And others. I was suffering, until two weeks ago with two of the worst college BB teams in America, and both got rid of their head coaches. So think Patrick Ewing when you consider Mark Fox.
Now, this is not to say he could not be good as an assistant, but he is just so much 180 degrees from everything I love about Coach Ed. The way I would look at this hire, if it is so, is the fraternal order of coaches helping each other out. Please, please no Mark Fox. Yes, that bad.

Sounds like the perfect resume for a Chief of Staff.

I get where he is coming from because some people seem to think that if we are not DMV heavy then we suck when that is far form the problem. However, this should not be taken as "we shouldn't even bother with the DMV", I just think there is a Grand Canyon size gap between twisting ourselves in knots for AAU/local schools (which is absurd) and the mentality the previous staff had of just walking in and expecting commitments even with poor relationships. If we can find some middle then I am happy with that

Caring about and working the DMV, and having an eye for talent and a way with people/fellow coaches, the important things, methinks — more so than being from the DMV. Now, I would have loved to have gotten Jones on our bench, but I know Ed and his staff are pretty well respected in, and know and want to work, the DMV. Prov on occasion would practice at a local high school facility, and I know the coaches there all really really liked Ed and his staff, in part because they understood the local scene so well.

Why are people worked up about Jones when we have Ivan Thomas? Thomas coached at TC Williams and Edison (in Alexandria) and ran Boo Williams AAU for 13 years. He spent time in the Hampton area, went to VCU and GMU and he worked with Cooley for 6 years at Provi. Is he somehow not local enough for people? Not experienced enough? Seems like a simple "grass is always greener" situation for people around here to look past him to a guy like Jones, who has less experience at this level.

This area is huge. A lot of talent. There isn't one magic pill of an assistant that will prevent other schools from getting top talent in the area, and that includes Dematha.

So Henton, Battle, and Blaney are listed in the directory as Assistant Coach-1, and Ivan Thomas is an Assistant Coach-2. Interesting if Thomas is an Associate HC here or if one of the above 3 is something below a full-fledged assistant. Regardless, only 3 of the 4 can be out on the road for recruiting purposes, correct? Battle was the Assoc. HC @ PC. friars.com/news/2021/10/15/mens-basketball-jeff-battle-promoted-to-associate-head-coachYes, correct re 3 of 4.

I don’t have confirmation that this was final approved, but looks like the NCAA approved two additional (non-recruiting) assistant coach positions for men’s and women’s basketball, effective July 1, 2023.

They can recruit but on campus only. Pretty sure coaches will be able to have more off season contact too. This is a good look in my view
