NY Knicks, the first pro team I ever rooted for. Dick Barnett, Dave Debusschere, Walt Frazier, Mike Riordan, Bill Bradley, Phil Jackson. . .
RIP

I have never heard a louder arena than Madison Square Garden in May 1970, when Willis Reed, limped out of the Knicks' locker room for Game 7 against the Lakers (with Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor) just before the opening tipoff and after warm-ups, won the tap, and hit his first two jump shots to give the Knicks an early lead they never surrendered. Just deafening...and I've been to two Stanley Cup clinching games for the Devils.
Willis Reed was the heart and soul of the Knicks. Period.
Requiescat in pace, Captain.

Junior's take on Willis Reed. For those of us who grow up loving sports, losing heroes is inevitable. When I heard Tuesday that Willis Reed had died at the age of 80, I felt literal chills of sadness. I’m not sure I ever in my life referred to him as Reed. He was Willis or, more frequently, “The Captain.” I grew up with the New York Knicks and with Reed. In 1964, the team finished 22-58, the worst record in the nine-team NBA, just as I was becoming aware of basketball. With the first pick in that year’s draft, they took Jim (Bad News) Barnes out of Texas Western. In the second round, they took Reed a center out of Grambling. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/03/23/willis-reed-knicks-fans-appreciation/
