This roster is hardly overflowing with talent. If we can keep a guy like Murray that has proven he can be an impactful piece at the high major level, we should do it.

Shaka Smart got Marquette into the tourney in his 1st year at 19-13 last year.

This is what we are dealing with now with our scholarship players, correct?
Not in Portal
Ryan Mutombo (rising junior) Bradley Ezewiro (rising junior) (already transferred once) Brandon Murray (rising junior) (already transferred once) Jay Heath (either rising senior/graduate student) (already transferred twice and got waiver) Wayne Bristol, Jr. rising senior, sat out sophomore year, transferred once) Akok Akok (rising 5th year player) (already transferred once) Qudus Wahab (rising 5th year player) (already transferred twice and got waiver)
In The Portal
Denver Anglin (rising sophomore) D'Ante Bass (rising sophomore) Joran Riley (rising junior) Primo Spears (rising junior) (already transferred once) Malcom Wilson (rising 5th year player)
Bryson Mozone has no eligiblity left, and so is done.
EDIT: Added Bristol.

Tough to know if you can put that genie back in the bottle. Murray had the run of the place all year, and seemed to play like he knew it.
Spears next to him, regular 35 mpg, and nobody else on the roster quite as talented. DaJuan junior year vibes.
Spears moving on is probably a good step one (for lots of reasons).
I'd like him to stay -- hopefully you get him to buy in. He's easily the closest guy we've got to a star right now. Maybe that changes after the transfer season.

How many you expect to stay for Ed Cooley? The only one I would bank on is Mutombo, though I think others will stay. Personally, I would love to see Akok stay. Notably, of this group, all of them have used their "free" transfer except Mutombo, Anglin, Bass, Riley, and Wilson. Heath and Wahab have transferred twice, so unless they graduate, it might be tough for them to leave, as I am not sure the NCAA (which hands out waivers like candy) will be giving 3rd time waivers to Heath/Wahab. So if they want to play college basketball, there's a chance they are stuck at Georgetown whether they want to or not.

Perhaps Denver Anglin stays? Good sign: He has room to grow. The way he appeared to be used didnt build his confidence. I'd like to see what he can do. Does he compete?

Cooley won't -- and shouldn't -- stand for it. Yes, he has talent, but I don't know that Cooley can change someone that much. I expect everyone to play better under Cooley ... but I'm not sure this particular issue had anything to do with Ewing. I thought Spears stayed engaged as long as anyone really had a right to ask, but his game is all ballhog. I don't mean that in a perjorative sense -- he's just only really good at one on one and hit a mid-range. It was super useful for us this year when we were terrible but I don't think it fits and I find it hard to see him taking a bench role (would be a great second team scorer) or changing his game. I'd rather have a team that plays team ball and defends than worry about mediocre talent because it's the only talent we have. The player with the most talent that actually wins games on this team is Akok Akok anyway. The other dude we should be working hard to keep is Jordan Riley. We may not have an elite offense next year, but grab them and a couple more guys and with Cooley, we will actually defend. EDIT: I like Bass in this set up, too. I don't think he's a star, but putting Bass, Akok and Riley on the floor with a capable coach will make it hard on people. That's a start.

Mabye they were good in spite of him but odds are he can and will play defense.

If listing Spears' qualities you'd have to also say he's a really good ball handler. Below average court vision and decision making, average passer, but a good man to bring the ball up court against pressure.

Just get your money down early that wherever Spears ends up, the record will suffer. He is a losing player.

I would be thrilled if more transfer, basically the only one I would like to come back is Akok, everybody else showed they had little to no interest in defending, we need shooters, and tough minded defensive players. Ewing was dumpster juice, but that team should have been able to fight hard enough to win at least 4 or 5 more games. They were content to be bottom feeders.

I trust Coach Cooley will pick the players he wants from that roster but I'm ready for an overhaul.

I think the most important thing Cooley can do this year is rebuild the culture around the team. We need to build that expectation of hard work on the court, in practice, in improvement. We need to build a strong sense of teamwork as well. On team performance over individual numbers. That does not mean you can't get talent, but we are not going to get OR retain the talent you'd need to win anything at this stage.
Build a team where players play for each other and want to be.
I'm not saying any of these guys won't want that or won't do that. I don't know them, and I don't know how they'd function in a functional program with a real plan. So I want to make that caveat. This isn't about Speirs or Murray or anyone specifically, because maybe the on court elements that I saw from them that wouldn't fit in a successful team were not how they'd play in a well coached team.
But there's no amount of talent I would take this year over building that culture. None. (And while there's talented players on this team ... it's not that talented.)
You can't win if you don't defend. It's very hard to have an elite offense if no one can pass. Talent is important, but setting the standard of effort and teamwork is far more important.
