Among the many GU fundraising e-mails sent throughout the year, I find this one to be the most interesting because it reveals the former athletes’ competitive school spirit and post-graduation engagement with GU… through the athletes’ pockets… The e-mail reads: “Hoyas! We are in the homestretch of the 2023 Letterwinners Challenge. See where your team stands and make your gift before the buzzer!” Here’s the link to the Challenge (which is about to end): letterwinnerschallenge.georgetown.edu/?appealcode=23AG004272&dids=10.11.12.18.21.22.23.26.27.32.33.39.40.59.64.65.66.535.67.68.69.70.71.72&amt=100Check out the Leaderboard. You can play around with it to see how teams are ranked in donations, amount of donors and % of participation. Guess which team is the worst… It’s time, Jack.

I’m certainly not giving a dime to Georgetown basketball until appropriate and long overdue changes are made. I don’t blame our basketball letterwinners for doing the same thing.

So basketball was 20 out of 21 in dollars given, last in number of alumni giving, and dead last in % giving at 2%. Sweet!

I can think of one letter winner in men’s basketball who sure has the means to help boost the $2715 total for that sport…

Other than 5 or 6 guys who made money in the NBA, all of whom have given millions to the school, the basketball alums are not as wealthy as many other sports alums.

Absent some data, you are making a big assumption. A basketball alumnus is no more or less able to give than any member of another team.

You and I have discussed this stupid Letterwinners Challenge thing in HoyaTalk the last couple years. I get it. Let's shame the basketball alums. That is so fun and productive. They haven't given us enough of their money. Even though they have given millions back to the school. Also, you are being disingenuous when you say we don't know how they are doing. Unlike in the other sports we do track where almost all of these guys end up professionally. We have more information about them than any other group of athlete alums. Truth is most of them don't make a tremendous amount as professional basketball players, but their pursuit of professional basketball careers sets back their earnings in other high paying professions (law, medicine, finance, etc.) and/or those that don't seek professional basketball have often taken community roles in coaching, mentoring, public service. We know a lot about these guys. They have constantly tried to support the basketball program and university in non-financial ways (both in public media (podcasts, video interviews, articles) and privately) and have not felt appreciated and supported by the school. I can't imagine why. With people like you annually bringing up a lack of participation in the Letterwinner's Challenge as if that reflected some lack of connection and commitment to the school. I, for one, am so glad that this group is being publicly shamed by you and others on this board for not giving $20 to some made up challenge. They (as a group) have given millions to the school in the last decade, and have repeatedly shown significant interest in trying to help Georgetown Hoops through some difficult times. I would argue that they as a group contribute more than any other sport to the University, not only for their actual physical efforts giving their talent to the success of our team, but following graduation. I guess it is time for your annual public shaming. But I would love it if this annual rite would end. Please stop. It serves no purpose other than to create a negative inference against our basketball alums.

But do you actually believe what you wrote, in light of all of the information we have on the basketball alums and the years of data we have on the Letterwinners challenge? Also, do you agree with me that this entire thread is just an exercise in public shaming of basketball alums and is counterproductive at best and possibly actively alienating basketball alums or even worse shaming those who can't afford to give? What is the justification for this thread every year on Hoyatalk? The participation numbers are always the same.
