The world has lost a great sportsman. May he rest in peace.

Hard to separate any early memories of soccer from this man. RIP. A great one who will be missed.

WaPo writeups: He was hailed as the king of soccer, but it was Pelé’s other nickname — the Pérola Negra, or Black Pearl — that best evoked the rare brilliance he packed into his diminutive frame. Pelé, who for decades staked a claim as the world’s most celebrated athlete, died Dec. 29 at a hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. He was 82. www.washingtonpost.com/obituaries/2022/12/29/pele-brazil-soccer-dies/Just as Ali eclipsed his craft, Pelé transcended the sport, holding sway over audiences with magnetism and a million-dollar smile. And when he addressed the 77,000-plus fans, telling them “love is more important than what we can take in life,” he asked them to chant, “Love, love, love.” www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/12/29/pele-soccer/

In only saw him live as a member of the Cosmos and he never disappointed. From his last bicycle goal at Yankee Stadium to the brilliant goal he scored in Franz Beckenbauer’s retirement match years later, he was always magical.
I wore Puma Super Kings in high school because of him.
Godspeed to the greatest ever.
Leo now greatest living player…

My first exposure to soccer was because Pelé signed with the Cosmos. His impact upon the exponential growth of soccer in North America cannot be minimized.
We tend to use the accolade "the greatest" far too readily. Not in this case. Pelé was the greatest.
Requiescat in pace, Senhor Arantes do Nascimento.

Other than Pele, I watched George Best as a kid on TV (lived 5 years in a British colony and the only sports programming was British soccer) then saw Johan Cruyff for one year with the Washington Diplomats before the NASL folded.
