The regular season has concluded, and conference tournaments are underway. Automatic bids have already been awarded in several conferences at this writing, and the NCAA bracket will be completely filled on Sunday evening, March 13.
Gonzaga is again #1 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, as the Bulldogs prepared for their first game in the West Coast Conference tournament Monday night against San Francisco. Arizona remained in the #2 spot this week, after the Wildcats completed their regular season with victories at then-#16 Southern California (91-71), and at home against Stanford (81-69) and California (89-61). Baylor likewise held position, at #3, after the Bears ended their regular season with wins at then-#21 Texas (66-61) and at home against Iowa State (75-68). Auburn moved top one slot, from #5 to #4, after the Tigers concluded their regular season with wins at Mississippi State (81-68, in overtime) and against South Carolina (82-71). Kentucky moved up two spots, from #7 to #5, after the Wildcats defeated Mississippi (83-72) and Florida on the road (71-63).
There are again three Big East Conference schools in the AP Top 25. Villanova gained three slots, from #11 to #8, after the Wildcats defeated then-#9 Providence, 76-74, and Butler on the road, 78-59. Providence fell two spots, from #9 to #11, after the loss to then-#11 Villanova in their only game of the week. Connecticut fell two slots, from #18 to #20, after the Huskies lost at unranked Creighton, 64-62, and defeated DePaul, 75-68. Seton Hall is the only other Big East Conference school receiving any votes in this week’s poll.
Ohio State, formerly #23, and Alabama, formerly #25, both fell out of the rankings this week. Playing three home games, the Buckeyes lost to unranked Nebraska (78-70), defeated Michigan State (80-69), and lost to unranked Michigan (75-69), and the Crimson Tide lost at home to unranked Texas A&M (87-71) and at unranked Louisiana State (80-77, in overtime). Colorado State and North Carolina joined the AP Top 25 in their stead; the Rams are ranked #23 after defeating Boise State (71-68), and the Tar Heels are ranked #25 after wins against Syracuse (88-79, in overtime) and at then-#4 ranked Duke (94-81).
