"This is a defining moment for USF athletics and will advance our standing as a premier research university,” added [USF] President Genshaft. “I look forward to being in the same conference with academic and athletic powerhouses like Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse." gobulls.usf.edu/Sports/News.asp?i=1667&s=USFVery bizarre examples of "academic and athletic powerhouses."

Didn't you get the memo? "Academic and athletic powerhouses" now means "places where athletes get paid and don't have to go to class, while the rest of the student body is also dumb as hell and does lots of coke."

Well actually, Syracuse, Pittsburgh are highly respected academic schools. I don't know about Rutgers, but I don't hear bad things about it. Its just when they use "academmics and athletics" with the Syracuse Basketball team in the same sentence, you can't help but laugh.

Rutgers is one of the best "State Schools" in the country. Behind UVA, Michigan and not sure who else. Very good school.
Funny line though.

As far as state schools are concerned, I would think Cal-Berkeley would rank right up there, too.
This is the first time I've read the 'Cuse and Pitt being referred to as "highly respected academic schools". Syracuse's Newhouse Schoold of Public Communications certainly is esteemed, but I wasn't aware that such acclaim extends to the university as a whole. And Pitt, well, pardon me for saying so, but its name speaks volumes. Just jokin'....

I would say its behind a lot of Cal system schools, UVa, North Carolina, and Vermont for sure.

I believe the point is that GU, ND, and Nova are in this conference - why did she mention those other 3 schools. They must get too much sun out there.

I think the choice of SU(cks) and Pitt was deliberate.
Georgetown and Nova are not 1-A in football. Notre Dame is, but prefers to remain independent in that sport.
I think USF has visions (delusions) of Final Four and an Orange Bowl invitation.

I think it's more of the whole football schools vs. basketball schools thing. It's almost amazing that a school like USF and Georgetown are in the same conference with so little in common. USF doesn't identify with Georgetown or Notre Dame, they're already preparing themselves for the day in the future when the academically inferior schools aka I-A football schools split away from the academically superior, smaller, Catholic private institutions aka the non I-A football schools. Genshaft doesn't mention GU or ND because he knows its ridiculous to mention them, USF, and academics in the same sentence.
As for the talk of Rutgers, I don't care how many times people try to tell me it's a top public university, the place is and always will be a complete dump and a high percentage of the people who attend are complete morons (though some very intelligent people do attend as well). Interesting fact though, supposedly Rutgers has the highest percentage of students with STD's at any university in the world.

This post marks the second time today I've been the most recent poster on each board. I THINK they're paying me to do this, right? Man what a slow day... on here AND at work. Maybe I'll go bait some chumps on the UCMP Twerps board...

Texas and Penn State not too shabby either. As long as we're mentioning strong academic state schools, don't forget UCLA. I actually almost went there. I made the right choice.

A few years back the magazine 'New Jersey' published an edition headlined "If you can't go to college go to Rutgers". How sad is that?

Look i think that there are a ton of state schools that are better than Rutgers. I would probably even put the University of Oklahoma ahead of Rutgers since David Boren has taken over the school and gotten tons of money pumped into climatology, paleontology, geology, and art history programs.

If I were the USF president I'd be making positive statements about my school in the media all the time. How else are you going to be relevant with UF and FSU getting most of the state's education money? Gotta steal some of those bucks...
