Time to stop PC's roll. Starts on the defensive end and the glass.

Not saying we are going to win this one, but I feel like I’m a weird way our win (if we are so lucky), isn’t going to come vs DePaul, but in a game we least expect it where our opponent doesn’t show up.

We can beat PC, but it will take a heck of an effort. I just want to see fight and fire from the team. As bad as the game was last night- very- I was proud that they kept competing the cut the lead late. IO wish Rice made that open three to cut it to ten, although we very likely still lose.
I wonder if PC will focus on limiting our looks from three, as we shot it so well against them last time. We need Holloway and Aminu to draw fouls. Our only chance may be to turn this game into a messy one, shoot well from the line and three, keep it close, and try to steal it late. We shall see. I am looking forward to it.

Providence is an interesting team. Despite a 19-2 record and their spot atop the Big East standings, they aren’t getting a lot of love. They’re ranked below Villanova in the latest AP Poll, for example, as well as numerous other teams with far more losses. As good as the Big East is this year, you would think they should be much closer to the top 10. Ken Pom has them at 51 I think, just below UAB and Oregon. They are a sound team, though, and Ed Cooley continues to do a really nice job. It really seems like Providence should more or less be the floor for a program with our history and resources.
It’s hard for me to have much optimism for this game. Perhaps if Providence shoots really poorly, we could have a chance. They don’t have the best offense we have placed, but they had no problem scoring on us in the last game. It would take a lot to go right for us to have a chance, and if we can’t get off to a strong start, I could see it getting ugly. We also haven’t been starting strong lately. St. John’s really controlled things from the opening tip.

Providence’s record seems deceptive. They’ve been extremely lucky in some close games. #51 in Ken Pom despite being 19-2 and playing in a strong conference isn’t too surprising. Cooley will probably be the subject of some unfair criticism about his postseason record if and when Providence loses in the first round to a lower seed.
Providence is due for some bad luck, Georgetown is due for some good luck. Maybe this is a game where Rice makes a lot of 3’s or Watson gets in foul trouble. Providence probably wins regardless, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Georgetown comfortably cover the spread at home.

Providence probably wins regardless, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Georgetown comfortably cover the spread at home. The record notwithstanding, Providence is 51 on KenPom and we are 189, only 3 high major teams worse than us. They have been a much better team than us. We are 24% to win this game, according to KenPom, so it's winnable if things go right, but make no mistake, Providence is definitely the better team, and it's not particularly close. As far as being "due," I think it's not that we have had bad luck, but we have been so bad, especially on the defensive end, that we aren't able to take advantage when we do have better luck. For example, Butler played really badly against us in our last matchup at Hinkle, and we lost nonetheless. It was a measure of good luck that Butler shot badly, but our defense and office were so bad on both ends, it didn't matter. I agree if the stars align, we can win a game here and there, but if we are at the point where we have to rely on (a) our opponent to have bad luck and (b) for us to have good luck to have any shot at winning, that's a bad base to be starting. Odds are one of these days we will win a game. KenPom says we are 14.4% to go winless now. Still long odds, but with each loss, it becomes more likely. The best shot we have to win is for Rice/Carey to go wild from three in a game where the opponent does not, combined with a better defensive effort.

There have been some great upsets this weekend. Arizona State beat UCLA last night. DePaul beat Xavier. Vanderbilt beat LSU, and Georgia nearly beat #1 Auburn. I hope that means another upset is in store today, and we will beat Providence. Our players deserve to get a win somewhere, and I do think Providence is one of our better chances to pull a true upset. Despite their luck, they still haven’t gone 19-2 by accident. They’re a good team. Even so, we stayed close in the first game, and I hope we can get it done today. We will have to play our best game on defense and make our shots on offense while limiting turnovers. Although we haven’t put those things together so far, I hope we do it today. Hoya Saxa — I’ll be pulling for the upset today!

I don't think PC is as good as their record, so a solid 40 minute effort could make things interesting. It would certainly give the kids a huge and necessary boost- beating the #1 team in the BE. "Just Do It"
