There was a massive upheaval in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, after a series of upsets by road teams. Gonzaga returned to the #1 spot, moving up from #2, after the Bulldogs defeated Brigham Young (110-84) and Santa Clara (115-83), and Auburn advanced two slots from #4 to #2 after the Tigers won at then-#24 Alabama (81-77) and at Mississippi (80-71). Arizona moved up from #6 to #3 after the Wildcats defeated Colorado (76-55) and Utah (82-64). Baylor fell four slots from #1 to #5 after the Bears’ fifteen game season-long winning streak was snapped with home court losses to then-#19 Texas Tech, 65-62, and to unranked Oklahoma State, 61-54.
The Big East Conference continues to have four ranked schools, although Seton Hall fell out of the AP Top 25 after the Pirates suffered road losses at unranked DePaul (96-92) and at unranked Marquette (73-72). Villanova moved up three slots, from #14 to #11, after the Wildcats defeated ten-#17 Xavier, 64-60, and Butler, 82-42. Xavier fell three spots from #17 to #20, after the Musketeers lost to then-#14 Villanova and defeated Creighton (80-73), and Providence moved up two spots from #23 to #21 despite not playing at all after scheduled games at Creighton and against Connecticut were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Connecticut is now ranked in the AP Top 25, coming in at #25 after the Huskies defeated St. John’s in overtime, 86-78, and had a game against then-ranked #23 Providence postponed.
In addition to Seton Hall, Alabama also fell out of the ranking; the Crimson Tide fell from #24 after extending their losing streak to three games with losses against then-#4 Auburn (81-77) and at unranked Mississippi State (78-76). Replacing them in the Top 25, together with Connecticut, is Loyola (Illinois), which is now ranked #22 after the Ramblers defeated Valparaiso in double overtime (81-74) and Indiana State (64-56).
Illinois had the largest gain in the AP Top 25 this week, as the Fighting Illini moved up eight slots from #25 to #17 after victories at Nebraska (81-71) and against Michigan (68-53). Southern California had the largest fall in this week’s poll, as the Trojans dropped eleven spots from #5 to #16 after losses at Stanford (75-69) and against Oregon (79-69) while defeating Oregon State (81-71).
The eight programs presently suspending play due to COVID-19 are as follows:
American Athletic Conference: South Florida, Wichita State.
Atlantic Sun Conference: Liberty.
Big Ten Conference: Nebraska.
Big West Conference: California Santa Barbara.
Mid-American Conference: Central Michigan.
