Very true words by the coach. This season has not gone the way the players or staff had hoped to this point. There are plenty of reasons/excuses, but giving on the players at this point is not helpful. They need support and encouragement from the fans more than ever at this point. Agree totally. How does that square with Pat’s post-Marquette presser? Does perpetually sucking and finding new lows promote perpetual pessimism? Asking for a couple thousand friends…

Esh was fired because of his losing record (and big mouth) and pressure from the student body, fans and the Board. Pat has a similar losing record. [/quoote]As bad as Esh was, his tenure was so much better than Ewing and he left the team in a much better spot than Ewing will. It’s unbelievable that anyone could look at this and suggest we keep going with this mess. Hell no!

Are you suggesting GU basketball has performed better and is in a better spot over the Ewing tenure than it did/was under Esh? What facts do you have to support that idea?

While I won’t totally disregard #3 I think it’s being overblown just for this game. The only missing piece that hurt last night was Carey. I think he is our most solid player so that’s big. It’s nowhere near 14 points big. Dante was not giving us more than Tyler did last night. If Tyler was bad last night then we could use Dante being missing as an excuse. We can’t really consider Kobe a big miss at this point. We lost a last night because Aminu and Rice were terrible and selfish. Tyler was good, but he (and others) looked gassed to me late in the second half. Whatever your pre-conception of Dante's ability, in my opinion THIS team missed him at least as much if not more than Don, on both ends. That's preposterous but I know you have been discounting Don's contributions all year so not surprising. I am not saying Tyler is better than Dante though I am getting closer with each passing game. Dante is the most overrated player on the team right now. I came into the season thinking he was as valuable as you still think he is but the reality is he is not. Also the team didn't lose the game late. Butler put it away in the first 3 minutes of the 2nd half when everyone was nice and rested.

Not sure I have ever watched a Georgetown game where there was nothing about the Hoyas that you could take something positive from. I know there were players missing and Tim showing rustiness, but the game was just blah. No enthusiasm from the opening jump. No real emotion from coaches to players at the end of the bench. Not a good look. I guess it’s a sign of the times with the transfer portal in full blast, but you can not let a player(Rice) throw up shot after shot only hitting one while at the same time playing ole defense. Nor can you let a 5 star freshman continuously bull his way into pack line defense with very few positive results without benching both for a period. I know there was not much scoring power other than those two, but poor decisions become bad habits ,which left uncorrected become a style of play. A poor style of play. Still rooting for these Hoyas to turn it around. There have been Ames in the past few years , but you never thought they were being out hustled just outplayed. Not sure I could say that today. With all respect to Dante, I think we really miss Don Carey, his presence, and his ability to get a shot off to take the focus off Aminu. I’m happy to have him but I’m not sure it’s a good thing to be that reliant on a two year grad transfer.

I'm going to assume this was not directed at me since I have never discounted Don's contributions. Quite the contrary, I posted in a prior game thread that he was the most important player on the floor and was roundly mocked for that statement. I did not make any comparison asserting that Dante was better than Tyler in my post either. My simple point was that his absence was important and noteworthy.

I apologize you are right I got you confused with DFW. Doesn't make you assessment about last night any less preposterous. Dante missing was a non factor and could easily be argued helped last night based on how Tyler played.

I like Chuma but I would prefer his minutes come in a game that's a blowout.

Maybe if he was spelled in the 1st he could have played just as well in the 2nd. I have stated in other threads that I wish Tyler was good enough to move Dante to the 2g. After last night I believe Tyler is ready but having Dante for a change of pace would be great.

Depends if we're seeing Dante from last year that will distribute first and shoot at last resort or the Dante this year who has been hunting for his shot. If we can get the Dante from the end of last year back, he's a key asset.

If Dante does not follow the coach’s wish, then he has to sit (like Blair).

One of my biggest frustrations from last night (and I've noticed it at points over the course of the season) is the points left on the court. It might seem like nitpicking, but when you consider the changes in momentum and how a game can get away from this team when their deficit balloons, every basket is seemingly critical. I won't argue that Ewing doesn't have his flaws and that scheme doesn't play a part in losses, but he's not missing 9 free throws (to say nothing of how many of those were front ends of 1-1s), he's not missing dunks (which then turned into a 3 on the other end if I recall correctly), and he's not unable to put the ball back into the basket after getting what seemed like 10 offensive rebounds in the same trip down the court. A lot of this is fundamental and it's stuff that players should be able to do before they get to campus.
I can't help but laugh. When watching warmups I noted that Georgetown was practicing their flashy dunks, alley-oops, etc. I was thinking maybe they should instead practice outside shooting (I recall Dartmouth at halftime came out for shootaround and seemingly no one was shooting inside the 3pt line) or shots they may get in the flow of the game. Lo and behold they get the dunk opportunity they practiced for!

Lo and behold they get the dunk opportunity they practiced for! Been saying that poor FT shooting was going to cost this team and last night it sure did not help. Missed dunks and put backs hurt but are not uncommon. I think that confidence and morale on this team is reaching rock bottom and that is leading to players trying to do too much and it just snowballs from there. A calm voice is needed and so is some structure which can be drilled into players. I do not agree that there is a talent shortage as much as there is a maturity shortage. These are kids and it's easy to feed off positive vibes and negative vibes--as suggested by Coach Crouch. How to break this cycle is the challenge for the coach. He did it towards the end of last season but had a veteran group to work with and has not shown that he can do it yet with this group. Team needs Carey back and one or more of the other players to step up and play beyond their years if there is any hope of turning this around. Unless and until that happens who can blame fans for their pessimism after watching performances like last night in an arena that seemed empty except behind one basket.

I disagree that there were no positives last night though not many: Beard and Billingsly. I do not understand Rice getting 35 minutes- if he is not on, he is not a plus.It almost seems as if Ewing et all feel that if he gets hot, we are in business, so leave him in until that happens. Quite the offensive philosophy. About the same as not reining in Aminu's ( and Dante's) driving into a swarm of defenders. I love A, but he needs to sit periodically if he plays out of control. By continuing to play him after 2-3 out of control drives ( or in Rice's case-dumb shots), they are encouraging poor choices. Quite the offense. I absolutely do not agree that these kids are not BE level performers. They need to be coached.

Just finished watching that mess. This is a bad basketball team right now. Not enough talent. Not enough coaching. Not enough fight. Staring 0-20 right in the face.
Don't despair COVID has you covered. Unlikely we get 20 games in this year.

Offensively,we are limited.
When you don't have consistent shooters or guys that can beat their man off the dribble and finish....what kind of offense can you run?
Honestly.
Q isn't here anymore, so we don't have a low-post game either.
Patience and smart shot selection is the key. These quick ill-advised shots by some players just ain't cutting it and guys with limited skills freewheeling on the court isn't helping.
Frankly, given our offensive struggles, that still is not as concerning as the defense.
What good is a good offense when you can't stop anybody?
And we can't stop anybody. There are fundamental flaws in the way we are being coached to play man-to-man defense. Maybe Orr sees the problem too, but he isn't the head coach. Orr tried the zone at the very beginning of the game. Kinda liked it, but we went back to man and the same things happened over and over again.
Only thing that really seems to work is our full-court press, but by that point the deficit is so large.
