I checked out Boo Williams Summer League’s terrific trio of Vernon Macklin, Maryland commit Eric Hayes (a Steve Blake type of body and game), and Duke Crews. The joke of the day was Vernon Macklin listed as 6’4” on the roster --- he’s 6’9” and probably has a wing span of 7’5” at least! The only weakness I saw was his hands. If they ever get stronger he will be virtually unstoppable. Macklin played the point man on the 1-2-2 press and created havoc with those long skinny arms. He’s a true weapon on the offensive glass and has the reach to gather anything above the rim. We asked Vernon for his list of schools and they pretty much remained unchanged -- Georgetown, Carolina and Wake Forest, in that order. A few weeks ago he had Ohio State on his list but did not mention them today. Unofficial visits are next on his list and he does have them scheduled. Crews is listed as 6’7” but seems a tad shorter. He’s certainly not afraid to mix it up and has a nose for the ball. Duke can really elevate and the crowd was treated to quite a show above the rim from Crews and Macklin. kansas.scout.com/2/412427.html

It would be so incredible if we could get 1 of these guys - but the fact that we are in the running for both of them is absolutely awesome.

"In that order."
Wonder what he meant by that... that's the order Macklin listed them in? That G'Town was the leader, UNC 2nd, Wake 3rd? There's a mysterious, Inthatorder University that Macklin is looking at along with the other schools listed?

yeah, buff, you better add In That Order University to his list of schools he's interested in.

Interesting reactions from Wake fans: mb9.scout.com/fwakeforestfrm1.showMessage?topicID=58014.topicMacklin would be a huge get for this program, and he'd benefit greatly from our system and coaching. When you see how much Roy has come along and how much Ewing has improved in 2 months under this staff, you'll see what I mean.

I love it: They're in the Big East - since we are from the ACC that makes us automatically better than everyone else, III will never be his dad, etc. etc. - I can't wait until we steamroll them in the tournament.

So true. I hate these assumptions and generalizations being made by people who obviously have no idea that we are one of the better teams in a Big East that will make the ACC look like a joke next year.

how much Ewing has improved in 2 months under this staff, you'll see what I mean. Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the staff was prohibited from working with players during the summer?

I am not sure what the rules are, but, suffice to say, they have at least put him in a spot where he can excel. He's been allowed to play wing for Tombs even though he's probably the second tallest player on the team, while he was strictly a post player at Indiana.

Ex-Big East Miami will kick ACC butt this coming season and will finish somewhere in the top 3. Clemente will be all-ACC rookie and Diaz will be all-ACC.

I didn't think the talk on the Wake board was all that bad, sure they made one or two "Big Least" comments, but nothing worse than we say here about the ACC. Meh.
Of course, I'd love to have both of these guys, and I think that would be beyond tremendous for our program; yet I would be satisfied with either one, even if Macklin somehow falls through and we land Crews. I'm a huge proponent/fan of Wallace, maybe the biggest JW fan around; yet I still dream of snatching up both Boo Williams players. It'd be a perfect fit, because Macklin (along with Summers, Ewing, Roy, and hopefully Jeff) could really help us to push deep into the tourney in '06... However, Crews, who is by most accounts a "gamer" with a lot of heart would likely be around 4 years, and would be a nice replacement for Jeff whenever he decides to depart. Crews coming would probably mean that we'd fall out of the running for Donte Green/Hickson/Vaughn and would only have 1 scholarship (Sead's) for 2007 (or 2 if Jeff jumps or someone transfers out), but I think it'd all be worth it.
Bottomline though, is that I will believe in Georgetown when the Letter of Intent is signed, the players are qualified, and we see the players on campus. Short of that, its all speculation so its futile to get too excited. I had some free time at work the other day and was surfing through some old posts, and it's amazing how many guys we thought we were getting for sure, especially Vernon Goodridge....
Still nice to hear Macklin recognizing us, though I have to think the longer this draws out, the worse our chances are... If he were completely taken away by GU he'd have committed by now, so we just have to hope the visit goes well.
Anyone know the scholarship situation at UNC and Wake? Is it going to help us if Hawes/Young commits to Carolina or someone like Augustin commits to Wake?

Macklin is about the fifth priority at Carolina (foolishly, IMO), if their fans are any indication. Despite Crews and Mack shutting down Hawes, Hawes seems #1, with Thad Young and Brandan Wright options also above Vernon. Boo shut down Wright as well, so....

Someone told me awhile back that the more quiet the whole recruitment of Macklin is the better the Hoyas chances are. Well, outside of some Ohio State speculation a couple of weeks ago its been real quiet with Macklin. I'll take that as a good thing.
Also last year that center from Delaware was known to have Duke as his top choice according to all the gurus though it took him forever to commit. Macklin's situation seems similiar with Gtown. Plus its not even August yet. People are getting spoiled by recruits commiting before June is over. In the past you had to wait much, much longer before decisions were made. The fact is a lot of top players still haven't committed as of right now. Macklin said he would decide by the end of summer. Kid hasn't even taken any official viists yet.

Have to agree with RB - those Deacs hardly took the Hoya name out behind the woodshed.
With the way they allowed Twerp fans to post on their board it was almost sad, really.
