Hey, we did what great teams—ahhmm, great teams in making—do. We persevered and found a way to win! You guys have already touched on who the obvious heroes of the game were, but, man, did you see our guys defend against the 3’s? Did you see the couple of key steals at crucial moments of the game? Did you all see how we virtually eradicated their press and trapping? Am I the only one looking at all of the upside of this young team? Where y’all finding all these negatives!?
Hope our guys recover from their various injuries and illnesses, and get back in the saddle soon!
Oh, and by the way, we did all of that with a depleted roster and our star player having a horrendous night!
Like the man said, “We did all of that on hash; imagine if it was steak!

this was a really good win. granted, it's howard but if you asked me before the game if we win without rice, billingsley and riley with harris and aminu shooting 7-23 I would have said we lose by 10+ easily. great contributions from beard, wilson, holloway and mutombo. you can clearly see the young guys improving these last 2 games. that said, aminu has to be smarter with the fouls and harris has to be better. harris looks completely lost offensively. he's constantly double pumping his jumpers and leaves his feet seemingly without a plan that ends with him just heaving the ball to the basket as a lob pass or a shot. Totally agree--this should be viewed as a good win. The"it's only Howard crowd" misses the point.Howard loses by 19 to Villanova at Nova and by 12 to the Hoyas in what amounts to an empty gym and a neutral court. Hoyas are missing Tim, Riley, Jalin and Rice, playing with a rotation of 7 against a very aggressive uptempo offense. Thought Ewing made good use of the timeouts and smartly had the players running some clock late in the game rather than hoisting shots early in the possession. This was always going to be a trap game, but when you factor in the loss of several players who would have eaten some minutes, the lack of contribution from Aminu, a bad offensive night for Harris and foul trouble for two starters, I do not think that you can underestimate the value of this game for a young team heading into TCU and the conference. Lots of room for improvement, but even those of us who are often critical of Ewing should allow ourselves to be happy--at least until Saturday.

They made 11 3s on 25 shots for 44%. As expected from a patchwork of players playing together for the first time, there were plenty of wide-open shots.

As others have alluded... the win was the only goal last night.
It's great that Tyler broke out and Malcolm had a good one.
But the 12pt win - down 2 starters & with only 7 scholarship guys - was success enough.
At least for one night.
Let's beat TCU.

You can't pigeon hole Dante -- yes, he is high energy and sometimes prone to turnovers and trying to do too much. Yes his shot is still in need of tweaking. I much prefer he lean more on the pull up, which is solid, than the forced three. So, yeah, he's a sophomore and has a few things to work on - no surprises there. I think we forget he is only in his second year. And, as great as last year's BET run was and Dante's role in it, it was also a weird year for all those reason around COVID and roster changes, etc., and he was but a freshman. Watching him closely in recent games, we certainly see some of the shortcomings. Now let's be fair and talk about his many up sides. Dante makes so much happen well on offense. There's no one else I feel better about bringing the ball up court. He's a warrior and doesn't back down. He disrupts the opposing offenses by getting in passing lanes, altering passes, and helping out. He communicates constantly with his teammates and is in charge of the floor. Is it all flawless and pretty? Of course not -- what is? I'll take his promise and smarts, and I'll definitely take his grit and hustle with all their imperfections because those are the qualities that embody Hoya basketball to me -- grit and hustle.

Gutsy win from the team given the circumstances. No Riley / Rice / Billingsley and then Aminu with 22 min and a reasonably comfortable victory against a dangerous team in a trap spot? I'll keep the complaining to a minimum thank you very much - Beard stepping up when the team needed him. The ability to hit the 3 will let him stay on the court with Dante, and with Riley out that's going to be way more common. He also was way more willing to switch screens on the perimeter and it led to some really solid possessions on that end. I went in focusing on defense, and we held them to .924ppp. Again this team lit up Nova for 1.2ppp. There is definitely improvement happening on that end and less breakdowns. It's not perfect but it's trending much better.
- Yes not a good Dante game. Even with 6 turnovers he still had 7 assists. The press did play into some of our worst impulses, forcing transition opportunities that just weren't there. I've also mentioned my concerns with him inbounding the ball underneath, and Howard finally did what I would've done, which is put a super long guy on the ball. He had no chance inbounding. And yes the jumper continues to be concerning, although at some point I don't know how to reconcile the leg injuries with a broken jumper. But he's clearly a value add to this team, they missed him dearly when he was off the floor, he gutted out 36 minutes at an extreme pace when we needed him.
- Valuable learning experience for Aminu. I didn't love the 3rd foul call (he's flying to close out and collides with the roller, if anything it could've been a moving screen) but that forced him to see if he could play with foul trouble. Well he failed the test today but learned a valuable lesson. The 4th foul was so bad, chasing a long rebound that he had no shot at. The 5th foul was him caught ball watching and then being forced to fly out at a shooter (and we can't complain about Aminu's 5th while Carey is doing what he does on those shots). He's going to have to learn how to play with foul trouble and better to find that out now than in Big East play.
- Howard did some things that I'd expect smart teams to do to us. They basically went under ever Dante, Aminu and Beard ball screen and over every Carey one. Aminu was pre-determined to try and go to the hoop and it didn't work. Dante was indecisive on some floaters. Will need a solid plan on those if we can't make teams pay from 3.
- My favorite play...Dante splitting pressure getting to the top of the key and then kicking to Carey. Don attacks the close out gets to the free throw line and instead of forcing up a shot kicks to a wide open Beard. Catch and shoot 3. That's what you want to see against the pressure.
- We've now had 5 different players score 20 points in a game. The offense isn't perfect but it's nice that more options are emerging over the course of the season
- Flashes of the Malcolm defensive upside with him flying out to close out on a 3 point shooter and force a shot clock violation.
Hopefully everyone gets healthy and is ready to go against TCU. Huge game to finish off non-con strong.

ESPN boxscore claims attendance 4,154 . . . and I have a bridge to sell you. 😁 At this point, ESPN is counting players and refs. 😉

Been traveling this week and just finished watching game. Don't see a Dante Harris thread.
Any word on his injury---announcers said cramping but I'm not sure about that.
Was Ewing asked about this in presser?

Was Ewing asked about this in presser? Pretty sure Ewing mentioned Dante cramping up while talking about how everything didn’t go exactly to plan but how he was glad the guys gutted it out and stepped up Dante also had a bad ankle roll v Syracuse and other posters have said that he may have another nagging injury as part of a justification for less efficient production so maybe something else nagging him as well. I want Beard to spell him more so Dante doesn’t need to go go go 100% of the time he’s on the court and hopefully his efficiency can bump up

Was Ewing asked about this in presser? Didn't see the presser, but he's had ankle trouble for the last couple of weeks at least so I assumed it was actually that and not cramping. Cramping would be great.

This game had another OOC loss written all over it. Great to see the new and improved Hoyas turn it around.

Malcolm's timing on blocked shots is excellent. He leaves his feet at exactly the right moment, or not at all if it isn't necessary. And if that baby hook is not a one off, look out!

SC maybe?

Glad to get another win under our belts. I know much is being made of the injuries/sickness, but other than Rice, both Billingsley and Riley have both played fairly limited minutes. So, it definitely hurts us, and losing their minutes makes our depth limited, but I also think we handled it well. And, if it gave Beard some more time, all the better in this game, at least.
- Offense: Other than Aminu and Harris, essentially everyone else had a pretty good game. As I detailed in my pre-game post, Howard's defense is horrible, and we took advantage, which was nice.
- Tyler Beard: Beard had a really nice game. I am not ready to annoint him our new PG, but he shot really well, and we need shooters and efficient scorers. If he can continue to fill that role, he's going to get a lot of minutes. I am looking forward to seeing more of what he can offer.
- Dante Harris: He's still our PG and does well in the role, but he had 6 turnovers. Yikes. If there's one thing I did not think we did well this game, it was handle the pressure Howard put on us. Sure, we broke their pressure a few times, but overall it was not great. But, he did have 7 assists, so he's excelling in that role.
- Turnovers: We turned it over 23 times. If Marquette/Shaka use a havoc defense, I am afraid what that will look like. We need to improve on that.
- Aminu: Bad game, but he was plagued by foul trouble in most of the game, especially the second half. I'll chalk this one up to a bad night.
- Wilson: Some nice blocks. I am still skeptical he can do anything like this against real competition, but it was good to see him get some good moments.
- Defense: We still gave Howard a lot of open looks from three, but they missed a bunch, and I do think our size and athleticism were just too much for Howard to handle over 40 minutes. We did better than in many of the other games. It's hard to read too much into it, but it wasn't a horrible defensive performance like some of our other games.
So, overall a nice win, and glad to see Beard and Wilson get some good moments.

Malcolm's timing on blocked shots is excellent. He leaves his feet at exactly the right moment, or not at all if it isn't necessary. And if that baby hook is not a one off, look out! I have to admit that I was not a big fan of Malcolm coming into this year, and thought that he may never develop into a useful college player at a high major level. It has been evident for a while that for a guy with his size and length he had impressive quickness and mobility, but never exhibited much basketball savvy or the strength required to compete against good college players. Even after an impressive night last night, he still has some obvious strength issues, he just needs to do better catching and holding the ball along with adding the bulk required to hold his position against other big men. All the being said, I have to confess I was impressed with some parts of his game last night and his development. His timing on blocking and contesting shots is really impressive. He had 4 blocks last night be he altered another 6 -8 shots and gave the Hoyas great rim protection. It was also really impressive to just watch him run the floor. He gets from baseline to baseline as quickly as any guy his size I have seen in a long time. While I think we are a long way from looking at him as an offensive threat, he has figured out his job in the pick and roll game, and makes the defense account for him or he will get an easy dunk or put back on the offensive glass. He actually also made a little jump hook in the middle last night, that did not look pretty, but was effective. While Malcolm has been at Georgetown now for 3 years, he is really still a redshirt freshman. He did redshirt his first year, and then he (along with everyone else) got an extra year because of COVID, so he could technically play 3 more years after this year. Depending on how long he stays, he could become an effective starting center in the Big East if he can add that bulk and strength and continue to develop the other parts of his game.

I'm sure somebody will then come in here to remind us that a random poster said Dante was seen on campus a few weeks ago in a walking boot, with no other evidence provided.
