Caught the second half of the showdown game between the Tombs and the Bethesda Magic. 44-39 at the half Tombs. Athletes, height, and shooting to the Tombs advantage easily. Focused on Sapp, Spann and Edgerson. Green in foul trouble and left midway through the half while Ewing then turned into a more of beast. Slams, bounds and blocks.
Edgerson leaned in on everybody. The guy is really strong yet showed some range on a couple of threes. Drifts outside quietly and calls for the ball. Hacked on a breakaway yet the small guard who hacked goes flying and he lands on both is feet. The guy is strong.
Thornton under most control I have seen this summer. No gratuitous three attempts-thoughtful control of the ball. The guy is clearly bigger than the 170 on the recruiting sights. He and Jon W showed great composure but Bethesda is not exactly Syracuse. Thornton showed a lot of defense today and point guard skills.
Sapp showed a lot of strength and quickness. Had a beautiful behind the head pass to a streaking Thornton on a foul call that negated the play. Great, quick crossover. Drops the shoulder on a quick move past defender and has wide visibility of the court. This guy will be special.
Spann was smaller than I expected. Handles ball in the open court well and is clearly a wing player. Dropped inside on the defensive end quickly. Rebounds well.
Jon W-the Hoya quiet leader. He knows it and takes it seriously. Class is his demeanor and quickness is the basis of his game.
Green-Don't why we need the shuttle with him and Ewing. They can fly.
Anyways, Tombs win by 30 doubling up their first half margin. I guess that part of the game looked the same.

Oops. Was 44-29 at the half. Tombs doubled up to win by 30.

hotel, thx for the report; I wanted to go this afternoon but other obligations and jet lag prevented me. Anybody catch Ashanti and Roy at 4:30?

I did. I made all four games today. This is what a man does when the power is still out at his home (thankfully power was restored by the time I got back). I though Ashanti had easily his best game of all the ones that I had seen him play this summer. And Roy had by my count 29 points. Bowman had a very solid game to although he had to spend much of the game guarding Roy. Bowman had 20 points though I couldbe off by a couple.
As for the Tombs my unofficial boxscore has:
Green - 14 points (fouled out with more than 10 minutes left in game) Ewing - 19 points (outstanding game) Egerson - 10 points (missed too many FTs) Sapp - 11 points (started for the first time) Wallace - 3 points (didn't play much and only shot twice) Thornton - 6 points (2 for 3 from the 3 line--his only shot attempts0 Spann - 5 points (not as good as last weekend but still solid)
The rest of the points came from the other two or three players on the team.

Some people go to Kenner. Some people work on their blog. Here is my friend's blog entry on being w/o power in DC. www.minortweaks.com

Quick player recap:
Sapp - Athletic. Had a few nice drives to the hoop and a few blocked shots where he really skyed. Probably been said before, but he reminds me a lot of Demetrius. Same body type, same athleticism, etc. Made a three or two, I believe.
Thornton - Not very active. Good ball handling. Didn't shoot that much. Seemed in control, which is good.
Wallace - Didn't seem to play that much. Pretty steady overall.
Green - Good game. Didn't force anything offensively. I hope that once real play starts he will assert himself more on the offensive end with more one on one moves. Side note: Kenner league refs are terrible. Green's fifth foul was called when he was boxing his guy out below the basket. Green couldn't believe it.
Ewing - Flashed some good offensive skills. Put back dunks, etc. Most impressive I think was a quick catch and shoot from the foul line where he sunk the shot and was fouled. Nice rebouding.
Edge - Active. Nice moves in traffic to the hoop. Seems to like to bang like he's three or four inches taller than he is. Seems to have a lot of desire and wants to get to the basket.
Spann - Not much to report on.

Just a "couple-tree" thoughts, Larry King-style, based on the past couple of weekends in cool, air-condidtioned McDonough:
--Brandon Bowman couldn't be on a worse team even if I and three of my clones were playing with him.
--Bowman did manage at least one nice block (that I saw anyway) against Roy. Good for him, that's a pretty thankless defensive assignment.
--Jeff Green is a man among boys in this league.
--It is S-C-A-R-Y SCARY thinking about a team next year that could have Jeff Green and Pat Ewing Jr. on the court at the same time. Scary for everyone else, I mean.
--Ewing looks exactly like his father loping down the court and grabbing rebounds with authority and elbows a-flyin' (even though he missed one or two trying to slap it into his off hand). Hmm, wonder who taught that kid how to rebound?
--When did Kenner League turn into the ACC with all these whistles?
--Jesse Sapp and Marc Egerson have really impressed. This is not to say Thornton and Spann are unimpressive, but the other two seem more polished.
--I am thinking of cancelling my vacation, just to see The Tombs and Clyde's match up in the KL finals. That should be a game to behold, assuming everyone's in attendance.
Anyway, I'll leave the expert analysis to those like MCI, who are more qualified for it than I, but damn, it's hard not to get excited for this season (the usual caveat applies "it's only summer league..." ).
And two questions looking forward to Wednesday's games:
1. I couldn't get to McDonough in time either weekend to see Custom Uniform, but I assume D.J. Owens is around and is playing this summer?
2. Is there anyone of note on Symonds who will be facing off against Gang Green on Wednesday?

Owens morphed into Dizdarevic and spent most of the game on the bench, scoring only two points with 4 rebounds. I hope that this does not mean that the lead bench cheerleader will be substituting for Owens when the real season starts.
It was much more interesting to watch Crawford play in a losing cause. He literally played all positions, jumping center and playing point bringing up and distributing the ball. By my count he had 13 points including 3 threes. Also, 9 rebounds and at least 2 assists. Too bad the rest of his team is so bad. They lost 60 to 83.

To add to the report on the Clyde's - Trophies and Awards game. I had Cook with 14 points, all in the first half. He also had 3 rebounds and an assist.
Hibbert had at least 12 rebounds, which is not surprising since Bowman was the tallest opponent and had to guard Hibbert a lot of the time. I noted 2 blocks but there were a lot more, including one where he stood flat footed and grabbed the ball as the shooter let go. I wish I had a picture of the surprise look on the face of the shooter.

For any of you that are able to attend the kenner league games, has Green grown at all since last season like many reports speculated? Is he up to 6'9 or even 6'10 yet? Please inform me because i am from New York and am unable to view these games sadly.

For some reason, Green does not seem any bigger to me. Maybe its the way the kenner uniform fits him or that I'm farther away than I am at MCI. Either way, he seems the same to me...both height and muscle-wise.
Roy looks stronger, though. He had farther to come so maybe that's why the change is more apparent.

I don't think Jeff is any taller. He is slightly heavier; all muscle. Biggest changes are in Cook, Bowman and Wallace. Roy also looks stronger as does Tyler Crawford. If TC were 2" taller, he would be a very interesting small forward given his attitude towards defense and rebounding.
The incoming freshman-Edgerson, Thornton and Sapp have all been hitting weights for some time although I sat next to a friend of Edgerson's at a KL game and he told me that ME does not lift. Great genetics then. With the weight work by the returners and the added depth, we will be a lot tougher by the time Big East tournament comes around.
Louisville, Cinncy and DePaul all are strong and quick at all positions-truth comes out in rebounding and moving towards the bucket with the ball. Edgerson literally leans in on people to get shots and on defense and stops them. Sapp does, as someone remarked earlier have a build like Demetrius. Has good quickness from what I have seen. If we can get some minutes to rest Jeff and BB, we will be competitive later in games and the season.
We look better on paper than we have in 4 years. We will find out for real about December.

Something funny about the Trophies and Awards versus Clyde's game is the first couple of times Brandon Bowman went to the free throw line, Ashanti Cook would face him and talk trash to him while smiling. I believe B.Bowman gave A.Cook a little shove as they were going down the court once.
A guy to watch on Symmonds All Stars is Abdullah Jalloh of St.Joseph's, he has only played with them once, though. There is a chance he won't be there this time. Some other guys who have played with Symmonds that you may want to look for are Peter Prowitt(7-footer who plays for Stanford, he matched up against Roy Hibbert earlier in the Kenner League) and Bobby Maze.

Who is this Demetrius that people are comparing Jesse's physique to?
I like to hear Sapp billed as "athletic" by everyone, because that will hopefully lead to him becoming a top defender with a couple years of Thompson training. I still think he's going to inherit Ashanti's position after this season, and will play next to JDub for the next few years rather than in his place at the 1 spot. It's a natural fit-- Jon runs the point, keeps everything running smoothly and distributes, and brings an outside shooting touch. At the other guard the bigger, more athletic Sapp brings a slashing, driving presence on the offensive end, and guards whoever is the better opposing guard (which will enable Jon to cover the weaker player and thus help on some of his defensive/lateral quickness problems)..... To me, it seems like a perfect compliment.

Who is this Demetrius that people are comparing Jesse's physique to? That dunk was so nasty it actually sank the Seton Hall program. Up until that game...everyone was talking about the emergence of SHU under Orr. His recruiting class was regarded as the best in the nation and Griffin was getting all kinds of ROY and POY mentions. SHU was ranked something like 13 or 14 in the nation coming into that game. They were the team to beat. That dunk crushed the spirit of the SHU pirates. They never recovered in the game and lost by 10. In fact, after that game a fight broke out amongst the SHU players. Griffin punched Ty Shine (or some other player) and got into heavy scrapping. The team never gelled again and nose dived the rest of the season. Griffin left for the NBA and SHU never pulled a recruiting class like that again. So, young friend, the answer to your question, who is Demetrius...well, he's the guy who not only posterized SHU's Griffin but posterized the entire program and turned it into the travesty it is today. Now that's a dunk.

That was Amaker's recruiting class, and he was still coach -- Griffin, Barrett, Toney-El and someone else? I don't remember. Amaker left with Griffin or a year later.
