barttorvik.com/team.php?team=Georgetown&year=2022We’ve now moved to a 2 win projection. We actually are considered underdogs in every game left (including at home vs DePaul). And after the SJ game that’s our only remaining game we are less than a 6 pt underdog!

KenPom says our odds of going winless are 7.5%—well above the pre-BET odds that we’d win the BET last year.
We aren’t favored in any games left on KenPom either. Best odds are against DePaul (45%) at home and the game on Thursday (37%). He also projects us at 2-17.

#178 on KenPom. Brown is back to being Dartmouth’s best win. Ahead of us are Brown (#174 10-12 in the Ivy), Tarleton St (#175 10-13 in the WAC), Indiana St (#176 9-11 in the MVC), and Illinois St (#177 10-12 in the MVC). The defense is rated #249 just behind South Dakota and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. And, we’ve got big hitters like Winthrop, William & Mary, Bryant, South Carolina State, and Canisius coming up strong from behind. Winthrop at least made it to the NCAA tourney twice since Ewing has been here so they at least are successful. Just like us they lost in both appearance in the first round coincidentally to two BE teams.

#191 and defense is #271. It’s extremely difficult for a major conference team to be this bad.

With the conclusion of last night’s games, we’ve vaulted up to #188 overall and at least by beating us, St John’s actually moved up 4 spots to 87! Rather coincidentally, we are now sandwiched by two other notable programs that are a little beyond their best years: UMass and Indiana State. Betting their fan bases wish it was 26 to 43 years ago too…

We’re partying like it’s 1972 and not 1984. 😉

Brown is in a little bit of a skid and we are now Dartmouth’s best win.

#206 and the defense is #252. If we were to finish here, the only Big East teams that have ever been worse are St. John’s (211 in 2016) and Rutgers (208 in 2007). Given the way things are going, this is very likely the worst Big East team since KenPom started ranking in 2002.

And, in what has got to be a first, we are behind a MEAC team - Norfolk St.

Things are so bad that we actually gained two spots after that game - UP to #204. Yes, losing on the road to DePaul by 8 points is an outperformance and helps the overall stats. That’s about as bad as it gets. And, still behind a MEAC team.

Bart Torvik explicitly filters out activity once the game is officially out of reach, which by his calculation was the Kaiden Rice miss at 5:27 left when it was 71-49. So his system will weight the rest of the activity much lower where i think our ranking went down there.

To give an update, we are now ranked 212 on KenPom, which I believe puts us at the worst Big East ranked team ever in KenPom history. We are worse than Mullin's worst team (211), the 2004 St. John's team full of walk ons (200), and the worst DePaul teams.
Our defense is ranked 256, which is still by far our worst defensive ranking ever, and the offense is ranked 151 (only Esherick's 2004 team had a worse offensive rating).
To give perspective, even within the Ewing era alone, these numbers are significantly worse than anything else Ewing has put forth:
Rank in 2022: 212; Worst Rank Before 2022: 100 (2019) Offense Rank in 2022: 157; Worst Offense Before 2022: 2019 (90) Defense Rank in 2022: 256; Worst Defense Before 2022: 2019 (133)
And, in all of D-1, the only worse high major team is Oregon State.

The two big postseason conference surprise teams last year are the worst two teams in the country this year. Odd that the small postseason sample size was not that predictive of future success. Who could have seen that coming?

Something about teams that came out of nowhere to win their conference tourneys last season... At least they came within 6 points of a Final Four.
