Welcome, Mr. Bass. Hope you aren't reading this, as something as simple as a celebration of your commitment gets highjacked by the usual posters and usual inanities. Most Hoya fans aren't like that, and we can't wait to see you in a Hoya uniform!

There are so many biases in the ranking systems ... but they are still helpful to look at. Exposure is the number 1 bias, and it makes sense. The more national AAU tournaments these kids play, the more the "professionals" see them and are excited about them. There's also a fair amount of promotion by AAU and HS coaches ... lobbying for their players. It didn't help McClung, but having some well produced highlight tapes and social media can also boost a kid up the rankings. There's a similar bias in terms of the high school program that a kid is on .. and the perception of his competition. Perceived athleticism and the physical attributes of a kid -- particularly height -- are also heavily overweighted. I'm all for targeting recruits who are top 100 or top 50 or top 30 or top 10, but I also recognize there are probably 50 high school seniors who have legitimate D1 Power 5 potential who are somewhere between 100 and 250+ in the rankings. This is not a science, the scouting acumen of the raters is somewhat questionable, and there's a huge number of kids who are out there. In addition to the ranking number, I like to see which other schools are recruiting ... for D'Ante it was Georgia, South Carolina and VTech (and Georgia Southern, but maybe that was early).
I'm very excited for this kid. He looks like he can jump out of the gym. He looks like he's filling out. I forgive him on the "University of Georgetown" faux pas. Based on the clip from the Thompson Center, I'm thinking he has Aaron Bowen type hops ...

Great summary of the recruiting rankings biases, and at the same time an acknowledgement of their usefulness. I have seen some tape and while he seems athletic he's a little slower off the floor and not as quick as Bowen. My main concern for Bass would be his offensive skillset and not being quick enough to defend the 3, while being undersized for the 4. I imagine this is what is holding back his ranking, but if he can develop an offensive game (doesn't need to be a big time scorer just a decent passer and slasher) and prove that he has lateral quickness, he can certainly exceed expectations.

Moderator Note: I just moved 2 pages (!) - 36 posts that had little or nothing to do with this new committed Hoya and everything to do with posters grinding the same old axes and polluting seemingly every thread to the point that the threads become unreadable. STOP.If you feel the need to pound your chests making the same arguments over ad nauseum, go here and do it: hoyatalk2.proboards.com/post/943780/threadI won't waste my time moving future such posts out of this thread, I'll just delete them.

Like I said before glad he’s on board. Seems to have potential but the key willl be keeping him on campus for four years. Staff has shown the ability to develop recruits when given the chance.

While I acknowledge the inaccuracies of rankings as I have said, it's always an indicator of a good recruiter to find kids that are trending upwards. If this jump into the 150 would happen that would definitely be a very positive indicator of Bass' floor. I think most recognize with his body type that upside was there all along.

This is the key for Ewing. He has shown glimpses of being an exciting coach (the Texas game at MSG with Mac, LeBlanc and company), the improvement throughout the season last year, figuring out a way to compete with basically 6 scholarship players a couple years ago, but each time attrition has collapsed the hard earned gains. The foundational pieces of a solid program are starting to emerge in Harris, Mutombo, Riley, Billingsley, Anglin, and now Bass but they must be kept around for several years. Guys like Aminu can make a big impact in one season if they have a team around them, but we're not going to be able to sustainably build a program recruiting one and dones. Third year Anglin and Bass with fourth year Mutombo, Riley, and Billingsley supplemented by some talented younger players is a top of the conference level team. Turning over the roster before we get to this stage is what has held us back with several rounds of promising young players now.

I think most recognize with his body type that upside was there all along. “Decades of experience”… This would go far for Bass's overall psyche he knows his worth, as stated in the article within the blog. Hearing a lot of fans bashing Bass about his ranking, there's good and bad related to most folks opinion. The question I have for the stone throwers, does the negativity fuel his fire or bring our new recruit down? I'm sure we all don't mean to derail a KID that hasn't even played a game for the blue and Gray, so lets be better then what we are. I think we'll be quite surprised come 2022 or 2023 if it takes that long. I'm sure we'll be as surprised as we were with our 2021 tournament MVP with a similar ranking. You think being a underdog had anything to do with the two becoming instant friends, I do?

Any idea when the next Rivals rankings update comes out? Rumor was he'll see a big improvement in his ranking.
