Has anyone mentioned elsewhere that Jerome Williams' daughter is an incoming freshman on the team? guhoyas.com/news/2020/8/3/womens-volleyball-georgetown-volleyball-adds-five-newcomers-in-class-of-2024.aspxGabby Williams Freshman / 6-0 / Middle Blocker Las Vegas, Nev. / Bishop Gorman Club: BBC Volleyball Prior to Georgetown: Played club for BBC Volleyball … Team placed first in Gold Bracket at both the 2017 AAU West Coast Championships and 2018 AAU West Coast Championships … Father, Jerome, played basketball at Georgetown (1994-96) before embarking on a nine-year career in the NBA. Coach Heller: "Coming in from Las Vegas, Gabby adds some depth to our middle and opposite positions. She brings in a great physicality and fast arm that will be great to add to our gym. Gabby brings the ability to play in multiple areas that will help the team progress." And some other very talented incoming freshmen! Cannot wait to see them all together! Future looks really great for this team. This is a team, once they get back in the gym, that can make it to the Big East tournament. Williams' younger daughter, Giselle, will also be joining the Hoyas as a freshman this fall. Gabby will be a sophomore. Unsurprising that those girls turned out to be Division I players... Excellent athletic genes from their father, and more importantly, great mentorship. Very exciting to see them continuing the legacy.

Not sure if we can switch the title to include 2021, but it was a fun evening in McDonough tonight. Tough to say from the first game of the season, but overall, there are some intriguing pieces on this year’s team. Cusi as always is a star, but it’s amazing not only how much ground she covers but how much she sometimes needs to.
Emma Plutnicki (a junior, although I don’t remember seeing her play in 2019) is a joy to watch at setter—her sets are on point, her service game is quite good, and she is opportunistic, scoring a handful of points on fake sets as she saw holes in the AU frontline.
A number of first-year Hoyas contributing, with Mary Grace Goyena seeming to be a highlight (though her hitting percentage could stand some improvement—she seemed to be blocked a fair bit). Minnie Purcell and Giselle Williams also shower promise on the attack, and it’s early, but Karis Park definitely showed life coming in primarily as a server but also making a handful of good plays on the back line. If she develops consistency, she could be the successor to Cusi as a multi year starter at libero.
All in all, it looks like some good pieces moving into place, though they’ll take a little while to gel as most of their opponents had at least a shortened season last year. The vibe around the team also seemed good, as there was a looseness to the team, even as they went down 24-10in the third set, they rallied for 3 points before giving up the game, and that momentum carried into a dominant set 4. Just couldn’t pull it out in the fifth. I had to leave at that point so I’m not sure if they were spent in the fifth set, or if AU just took it’s game up a notch.
One other nice bit was the crowd. Probably 400+ in the heart of the match, with a group of a dozen or so GU football players getting the crowd into it.
