The Lutheran international school (aka as the American school since it had a US-based curriculum) I attended in Hong Kong was originally the Crusaders. It changed its name to the Dragons sometime in the 1980s

The lighthouse logo is a bit incongruous for the Indiana cornfields. But whatever. This makes three schools in the area with light nicknames -- UIC Flames, Knox Prairie Fire (nee Siwash), and now Valpo Beacons.

Never mind the incongruity of a Lutheran school embracing the Crusades centuries before the Reformation, but it's another example of a word that has fallen out of social approbation. A crusader is literally someone "fighting for the Cross" and that's not a popular selling point among the youth segment these days. And, let's not forget it's an opportunity to sell new merchandise for Valpo, who should really rebrand as "Valparaiso" and not something that rhymes with a popular brand of dog food. Sadly, it's an example of college administrators that lack the good sense to look to the crowd and say, "No." Valpo has bigger problems than a nickname; enrollment, for one thing, is down and it's been tapping into its endowment to pay bills, according to reports. Calling yourself the Beacons out of a sense of self-importance isn't getting an extra paying customer in the door. Changing team names is a secular crusade all its own, with much the same outcomes as those battles a millenium ago: in the end, not much was gained. As for Holy Cross, they are keeping the name but retiring the knight-on-a-horse character. For now, no one wants to rename the school "Fenwick College" or somesuch title.

It holds itself out as sort of "pan-Lutheran" and extolls is positive relationships with all of the LCMS, ELCA, and WELS, but that's a tough position, since LCMS, ELCA and WELS want nothing to do with each other.

I only know LCMS as liquid chromatograph mass spectrometry (my work for 37 years).

Valpo has been spending money on billboard ads in the Chicago area introducing the new name and logo. I can't really understand why.

Valpo has been spending money on billboard ads in the Chicago area introducing the new name and logo. I can't really understand why. Recruiting for applicants maybe? It does tout its proximity to Chicago being only an hour away. From its website: As to where you’ll find us: Valpo is located just an hour’s drive from Chicago in Valparaiso, Indiana. We’re close to Lake Michigan and the famous Indiana State Dunes National Park, and an easy drive from just about anywhere in the Midwest.

Strange name but OTOH what the hell is a Hoya?! 😀
