My sense is that a lot of the players of that era treated Georgetown football as mostly a big joke (that's certainly the vibe I had when I was in undergrad in 2004-2008) and certainly not worth investing the kind of emotion and commitment that Rob seemed to. Benson was... well, the subject of enough scuttlebutt around campus that I don't think he inspired much in the way of devotion. Kevin Kelly was a culture mismatch among many other things, a disciplinarian and "winning is the only thing" kind of old school guy dealing with a school and a program that clearly was not going to be racking up wins...and was OK with that. Being the long-timer that he was, Rob understood probably better than anyone else the needle that Jack DeGioia wanted to thread with the football program and what it's raison d'etre on this campus even was at that point. And he's figured out ways to build up a culture around it that seems to be getting a reasonable amount of bang for buck. The whole "4 for 40" thing is a pretty straightforward value proposition, and while it's not going to appeal to all or even most Patriot League caliber recruits, it seems to appeal to enough to field a competitive team... and hopefully - seemingly - to develop and send out into the world class after class of satisfied alums. EDIT: This was a response to a post by thedragon, but that post appears to have been deleted?

I decided I didn't want my first football post to come across as a shot at Sgarlata when I dont follow the team closely. I felt that was unfair. To your point though, I do think during that time football was a bit of a "joke" to many of the guys, so your point is well taken.
