I’d like to think the program hasn’t sunk so low that we need to tie an assistants job conditionally to bringing in a recruit. I’d you think the staff can’t recruit the DMV as it is think how that looks to locals.

I think it's one of the most obvious things about the program now that they see assistant coaching spots as transactional vehicles for acquiring players.

Both coaches are qualified on their own, no matter who they are “bringing with them”. Seems like local reviews on those coaches are positive. But what do I know.

Worked for Larry Brown when he hired Danny Manning's truck driver father as an assistant coach. Won them a national championship and the whole Calipari-Turgeon system of recruiting originated from Larry Brown/KU.

But Nickleberry can coach/recruit too. Had he not landed with Murray he’d still be a good hire for the local scene. Brooks can coach and recruit as well. Both coaches worth isn’t solely tied to one recruit. It’s like in poker…would you rather win the hand or play the hand right?

We may be saying the same thing, but "helped" is too weak a term. I think Nickleberry is a good hire. But no Nick, no Murray. And likely no Murray, no Nick.

Choosing somewhere else, regardless of the reasons, is their right. Not implying you Madge, but those that get upset when a player chooses another school for their reasons, is just plain head shaking.

Didn’t they announce Nickelberry before Murray announced his transfer? They did, but we have no idea what level of assurances were made from Murray or Nickelberry beforehand. And so far, Nickelberry has failed in bringing in Fudge and Reid who were also touted as connected.

What about Brooks would make you think he’s an asset to the actual coaching part?
He was an assistant for some bad SELA and Howard teams and Xavier only gave him a director of recruiting/special assistant job. Local people may like him - but viewing from afar the DMV has a tendency to overhype their own - players and coaches alike.
The lowest hanging fruit for this program - assuming this is make or break year for Ewing - is fixing very fixable things on the floor (defense). I just never saw Brooks as an asset in that regard. And a fringe Top 30 guy at a crowded position wasn’t going to move the needle either. And if it is make or break - repairing things locally for 23/24 is pretty irrelevant.
I mean, given Borrego got canned with Hornets - I’d be much more in favor of Pat and the administration giving an enticing offer to one of the guys in that organization to come in and handle a bulk of on court things. My hope is they realized this and are headed in another direction for the final spot. But that feels like a stretch.

Still want Brooks, unless something shady went down. I want assistants who can recruit the DMV and nationally. He and Nickelberry would be a good pair. Ward was not going to move the needle next year. GU can’t drop a bigger bag than the SEC schools when they really want a recruit. LSU is willing to spend. 💰💰💰

Sorry, this really stings. Sure Ward would not have been a cure-all. If we were terrible last year with Aminu, how much better would we have been this year with Ward? But where exactly does that leave us without Ward? If we don't see some major transfer impact at the 4 and 5, we are going to stink again, maybe worse than last year, if that's at all possible.
