It's pretty simple - FSU was switching everything on the ball screens, and their bigs could stay in front of the Colorado guards on the switch. This completely shut down the Pick and Roll offense that completely wrecked our defense on Saturday. Colorado did not have any real plan B to go to. Lots of iso stuff, with guards trying to take their man off the dribble, which they could not do with any consistency. they have no real post up game to go to, which is one primary plan B - if your guards can't get past their bigs, then have your bigs post up their guards off the switch. The Colorado bigs could not post up effectively, and never really tried. FSU shows you what a truly good defense looks like. We played some good D down the stretch this year. and we shut down a good small ball Creighton offense twice. But a lot of that was Creighton missing a lot of 3s - some contested, some open. Colorado could barely even get any looks from 3 at all vs. FSU. As others have pointed out - basketball is quickly becoming a small ball game. Put five athletic 6'4-6'8 guys on the court. Switch everything, and you have a sound defensive plan. If all your guys can shoot and one or two can create off the dribble, you have your plan A on offense. If a couple of your guys can post up against similar sized/smaller players - you have your plan B on offense. I think we are going to see more and more teams posting up their guards against teams that play small against them. Villanova has been doing this for years. other teams are starting to see that a guard with post up skills, against a similar sized player, with everyone else on offense spread out at the 3 point line - is a very effective offensive set as the response to defensed that can effectively switch every ball screen. If nobody digs down to help on the post man - it is pretty easy to score with all that space to work around the hoop. If someone does dig down to help - kick it out to a wide open 3 point shooter. Right. It's the simplest way to play PNR D. And the most effective if you have the horses to do it. Our very best D teams under III switched all screens an awful lot. There's no way Q can do it right now. If we had done that against them, they would have waited for the switch, Wright would have blown by, someone would have had to help, and we are in the same boat. My hope is that he could at least passably do it next year. Just give ground but atay in front and use your length. Could we have gone to Bile as a small five and tried it? Maybe. We almost surely should have tried while the game was still in reach. But Q was the only offense we had for stretches too. So darned if you do and darned if you don't.

I agree that he can create his shot, he does not look to facilitate. When I see him drive he goes with a floater or trying to get to the rim and sometimes out of control at that...ha ha lol. I like how he keeps that left hand in the air after every shot, waiting for it to go in the basket. Now that I think of it So true... Ha ha very observant.

I'm watching the Colorado/FSU game right now and the main difference between Georgetown and FSU is that FSU, at least right now while I'm watching plays with all forwards and guards. It looks like to me the tallest guy on the floor might be 6 feet 8 or something like that. FSU is just playing with quickness and is therefore having an effect on Colorado's offense. I hate the fact that basketball is pretty much gone small ball completely eliminating the center position. Leonard Hamilton and FSU traditionally have an army of big men who are 7-2 to 7-4. Seton Hall's Ike Obigu was one of them. This game they had 7-1 Kopricva out guarding McKinley Wright on the perimeter.

Colorado shut everybody else out. Pickett, Dante, Blair, etc. struggled to get good looks at the basket.

I hope you are right and it works cause if not that is the blue print to beat the Hoyas in the foreseeable future. I wish we can watch this FSU game again so that we can see how they did it (meaning prevented McKinley-Wright from penetrating). Most of the time he was passing the ball to his left or right. They pretty much shut down most of the court in terms of giving McKinley-Wright options. FSU length really bothered Colorado tonight.

I wonder if Nate Oates would be content with staying at Alabama, or if the big boys like UTexas or maybe even Kansas go after him.

Florida State have athletic bigs that can switch when playing man to man I just think if we pressed more after any baskets that were made or went to a zone sooner that would have slowed Colorado down.

Ewing will have to change up his recruiting tactic in this case. None of the centers on the roster can cover ground like that. If we are out of scholarships what can be done? 🙏

Well FSU is a good team and they had the advantage of watching our game to see how dangerous Colorado can be (and it wasn't just our game but all season they won games by 10-40 points. There loses all season were in the 4 points to 7 point range) They were able to see what worked for us (pressing) and also decided to really attack McKinley Wright to make him work and get him in foul trouble or having the 7 footer impeded his court vision. Because really he's a pass first point guard who is not looking to score but looking to find the open 3pt man. Obviously it helped that Colorado wasn't on fire and seemed really tense this game (blowing multiple dunks) rather than being loose like they were vs us.

Not a surprise. Maryland overachieved this year. I did not expect Maryland to be down by 22pts...smh Maryland doesn't have any ballers. Haven't had any since Tremble left. Cowan's not there anymore. No centers, no PGs. Very little depth. They are a just collection of support and role players. Their saving grace is playing defense. But you still gotta generate offense to help your D and put pressure on the opposing team.

The other problem that hurt us was that Dante's short and we really didn't have another option at point guard, especially a taller or more athletic defensive option.

The way Wahab was being exposed with the late rotation I think a zone would have slowed down at least a couple of those first 11 3pt shots Colorado made
