St. John's exposed Villanova's primary weakness tonight - Nova is not very athletic. They have a bunch of shooters, but they are all thick/strong power players. None of them are particularly quick or explosive. They play to their game play very well and they shoot very well - which is enough against most teams. But against a very athletic, aggressive team like St. John's they can be exposed. Often they best teams like St. John's with discipline - the aggressive, fast-playing team makes mistakes while Nova makes very few. But when a team like St. John's can control the mistakes, they can make Villanova look pretty beatable.
It will be tough for us on Sunday. Nova will be focused after tonight's loss, and we have a long way to go in terms of putting together longer stretches of low-mistake performance. But at least we can go into the game with a bit of hope, after the way we played tonight.

Team has a chance to win 3 conference games in a row for the first time under this staff. Feeling like we finally have enough momentum to get this done. There have been significant improvements in several facets of our game over the past 2 games and continuing to trend in that direction will give us a puncher's chance on Sunday.

While we only turned the ball over 3 times in the 2nd half yesterday, we did turn it over 10 times in the 1st half....that won’t cut it against nova. We have to play 2 strong halves.

I agree B&G but Nova isn't more equipped than Creighton to cause TOs. If Juggy and Dante run the O like they did in the 1st half we will be in the game. In Dante plays PnR D like he did last night he will have more success against Gillespie.

Comparing Creighton and Nova, a couple numbers immediately jump out.
Creighton 253rd at giving up offensive rebounds, Nova 24th. Will we be able to muster enough 2nd chance points?
Creighton 25th at turning the ball over, Nova is 1st nationally. We'd do a hell of a job defensively if we were able to force another 15 TOs on Sunday.
Creighton 274th at getting to the line, Nova 30th. Defensive discipline will be key here. No haphazard reaches, effective closeouts without fouling perimeter shooters, etc. We all know about the infamous head-bobbing Nova drivers use to draw cheap fouls. Easier said than done to avoid.
Creighton 178th at defending the 3, Nova 297th. We did a great job hitting open perimeter shots last night. We will get our opportunities on Sunday just like we did in the first game. Just a matter of making them when open.
Creighton 103rd at getting blocks, Nova 336th. Clearly they are relying on positioning and boxing out rather than trying to alter shots. We've got to be aware of this and attack the rim accordingly.

Limit turnovers, get to the rim, chase them off the line. That is all. We had them beat last game just gotta stick to it.

YES- and we need to convert inside. Q had a number of good looks last time that just did not fall- we got no help from the refs with Nova players hanging on him, and I expect no help on Sunday- and those misses were a huge factor in Nova's comeback run. If we convert those high-percentage shots, it really pushes everything else into place.

What is the over/under of a timeout before the under 16 minute timeout? I get sometimes it is necessary (like Providence), but last night it wasn't needed. Pat called a timeout with 15:53 left and the score was 9-7. You can't be wasting timeouts so early. They will be needed against Nova.

Clearly a big emphasis last night on defense was sticking with your man on the perimeter to prevent uncontested 3's. We gave them 2 uncontested 3's early. We could not afford to give them early momentum from outside. So Patrick called TO to shut that down. And it worked.

Some quick thoughts before this one, love having a Super Bowl appetizer - Who do Bile and Pickett match up on to start the game? For Creighton, there isn't too much of a difference between Jefferson and Mahoney. For Nova, that's Daniels and JRE so very different skill sets. At first glance, you'd want Pickett on the quicker perimeter player (Daniels) but Pickett also did a great job on JRE in the first game. I really don't know here, but I'll predict Bile on Daniels and keep Pickett's length on JRE
- When Nova starts switching screens like Creighton did, will we be able to take advantage in the paint? Bile seemed comfortable at least getting to the area for high / low w Wahab, or just straight posting Bile if he gets Moore or Gillespie on him. Nova will have a ton of ball pressure and front post but can we find a way to capitalize
- The win against Provy was highlighted by limiting turnovers on offense. The win against Creighton was highlighted by creating turnovers on defense. Can we replicate either one of those against a stingy Nova team? In a world where we actually do both in same game we might be a legitimate threat in BE
- I swear I'm not going back to the play the freshmen theme....just pointing out the team is going to play 3 games in 6 days. Coming off a lot of rest beforehand but will be interesting to see if we start to fatigue. Nova plays at a slower pace and maybe we'll really see the effects on Tuesday as opposed to Sunday. I get they're young guys but Pickett was limping at end of Creighton game, it takes a toll to play defense the way we want to and be successful.

In the last few games the staff seems to have settled into a rotation of using 7 -8 guys. In the last game you had Carey and Tim I coming off the bench and Sibley got a handful of minutes. I don't have a real issue with that if the staff thinks that gives them the best chance to win, but when the schedule gets busier and they have all of those games in just a few days, they may have to expand that bench just so guys don't wear down and possibly get hurt. Just for reference Nova plays about the same amount of guys and that is probably part of why they play at a somewhat slower pace. Creighton goes deeper into their bench, but they play at a much faster pace

Relevant stats from the first game against Nova:
TOs: GU 12, Nova 7 FT attempts: GU 4, Nova 17 3PT FG: GU 7-23 (30%), Nova 15-39 (39%)
39 3-point attempts represents by far the season high for Nova, so of course we want to run them off the line a bit better this time around, but the most striking stat to me is the FT disparity. They're good at avoiding shooting fouls, but we are going to have to get to the line more than 4 times if we want to beat this team. Not expecting us to all of a sudden change our overall approach, but our guys need to pick their spots to attack and not shy away from contact when opportunities present themselves. If Nova wants to try to draw charges, make it worth our while and have them feel it physically.

Also refs were very favorable to Nova in the last game. Our guys need to sell calls better. Q got hit going up several times with no call, and those misses were huge.

Might finally be time for Pat to get T'd up yelling at some refs. I've been waiting almost 4 years! Wednesday was bad, but 'Nova getting the calls would be even harder to handle.

Wednesday was not that bad from my perspective. Other games have been so much worse.

Obvious that PE worked on the kids to stop uncontested 3's during the layoff. When we opened up and once again left our man to help underneath and left guys wide open in the corner PE had to have a "Teachable Moment".

But, I hope I am wrong, because we need better defense. I am just not sure what would change 3.5 years into defense that generally defends the three poorly. I find it hard to believe a COVID break led to a breakthrough or scheme change, but hopefully it did.
