At the risk of sounding redundant…Gonzaga is, once again, the top ranked team in the Associated Press Top 15; the ‘Zags defeated Pepperdine, 95-70, and also won at Saint Mary’s, 73-59. Baylor and Villanova remained ranked #2 and #3 respectively, as the Bears won at then-#5 ranked Texas Tech (69-60) after a COVID postponement of a scheduled game against then-#13 ranked West Virginia, and the Wildcats remained inactive after pausing competition due to COVID-19 and postponing road games at Xavier and then-#25 ranked Connecticut. Iowa and Texas exchanged spots in the Top 5, as the Hawkeyes moved up to #4 after a COVID postponement against Michigan State and a 96-73 win at Northwestern, and the Longhorns fell to #5 after a home court loss to then-#15 ranked Texas Tech (79-77) and an 82-67 win against Kansas State.
The biggest gainers amongst ranked teams this week are Ohio State and Minnesota, with both the Buckeyes and Golden Gophers moving up six slots. Ohio State is now ranked #15 after wins over Northwestern (81-71) and at then-#14 ranked Illinois (87-81), and Minnesota moved up to #17 after a 75-57 win over then-#7 ranked Michigan. Clemson and Illinois dropped the furthest amongst ranked teams, each dropping eight slots in the rankings; the Tigers fell to #20 after losing at then-#18 ranked Virginia, 85-50, and the Illini fell to #22 after losing to then-#21 ranked Ohio State.
Villanova, Creighton and Connecticut are, again, the only ranked Big East Conference schools this week. The Bluejays dropped three slots to #11 after a
70-66 overtime loss at unranked Butler, and the Huskies moved up two slots to #23 without playing a game, after a scheduled contest against Xavier was postponed due to COVID-19. Xavier is the only other Big East Conference school to receive any votes in this week’s AP Top 25.
Louisville and Duke both fell out of the AP Top 25 rankings this week; in fact, this is the first week since 1983 that neither Duke nor North Carolina are in the Top 25. The Cardinals defeated Wake Forest, 77-65, and lost at unranked Miami (Florida), 78-72, and the Blue Devils lost at then-#20 ranked Virginia Polytechnic Institute, 74-67. Alabama moved into the rankings for the first time, at #18 after wins at Kentucky (85-65) and against Arkansas (90-59), and California Los Angeles returned to the rankings at #24 after wins over Washington State (91-61) and Washington (81-76).
