Can't be considered an Old Timer unless you sat in the "Animal Section" and really thought Jim Barry, Jimmy Brown, Steve Sullivan, Owen Gillen, and Frank Hollandoner would carry us to national prominence. Can't be considered an Old Timer unless you watched Tommy O'Keefe arch his two-handed set shot or watched the first game at McDonough.

Somehow, I inhabit a blend of the Lifer, the Young Alum(nus - come on, we went to Georgetown, know your Latin), and the Old Timer. I think this pathology might be endemic to the classes of '03 and '03 (The Thompsonless Classes) and I understand the rest of the community having the urge to excise that entire period from reality, and therefore me along with it.

I wonder if recounting what went on in those years would shock younger alums. The "Sheridan Incident" occurred because during our home games at McDonough a student we only knew as Sheridan would wait til a quiet calm descended on the gym. He would then start to scream at the top of his lungs in a language that sounded German (although never sure if it was or just some German sounding jiberish). He had a booming voice and for the few minutes he screamed everyone would just listen. Then when he was done someone would yell "Sieg" and the whole animal section would scream "Hiel!" This went on for the whole year until the NYU game. With a large Jewish student body, the NYU fans in attendance and the NYU and NY media who were there, were rightly shocked. It was written up in the NY press as a blatant form of antisemitism even though the students in the animal section just thought it was funny and in a way was mocking the whole Nazi super race ideology. Clearly it was not but rather juvenile and disgraceful and the University finally came to its senses and banned Sheridan and the whole performance. Sheridan later became a drunken fixture on M street and the many bars that existed there back in the day. Yes we've come a long way in 50 years. BTW, Sheridan makes an appearance in Hunter Thompson's book "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail". Sheridan was the guy who Thompson gave his press credentials to just before Ed Muskie's campaign train pulled out of a station in Florida. Sheridan proceeded to harass and assault all the "Muskie Maidens" on the train and generally cause havoc before he could be thrown off.

Actually on a message board I'd say we have optimists, fake insiders, wanna be coach/analysts, and trolls.

Sheridan did his gig in the New South cafeteria also. I didn't know and can't believe he was a drunken fixture on M street. He is now an M.D. (orthopedic guy). He was a year ahead of me.
As far as the NYU game, wasn't it the game where Frank Hollandoner scored 29 points in the first half?

I know we had to throw him out of the Cellar Door at least once and the same Sheridan was the guy Hunter Thompson talks about in his book. Or maybe he just turned his life around.

Could be. I guess it will remain a mystery.

The only Hollander game I remember was the St. Joe's game where we actually were up around 12 or more points and Hollandoner was dominating in the paint. That was the Jack Ramsey team with Goukas, Cliff Anderson, and Billy Oates. Hawk costume was stolen and hung from the ceiling of the gym. Eventually lost the game though.

Before my time, but a quick Internet search said that Dick Sheridan (C'65) served in the Navy after graduation, received his MD from Wayne State circa 1971, completed residency at Cincinnati General Hospital as an orthopedist in 1976, and has practiced there ever since.

From DFW's Georgetown bball history: Hollendoner could be dominating. Against NYU, he set a school record by scoring 29 points in a single half, and ended the season with consecutive 28 point games.

The great Frank Hollendoner! As GU alum and media master Paul Anthony once said to me, "The Patrick Ewing of my era."

I remember walking the streets of Boston with the team after a close loss to BC. Frank was among the group and Coach O'Keefe wondering what he had to do to beat BC since it was an agonizing game to lose.

The great Frank Hollendoner! As GU alum and media master Paul Anthony once said to me, "The Patrick Ewing of my era." His backup was Neil Heskin. But Heskin kept breaking his foot and hardly ever played. once quoted as saying if he was a horse they would have shot him.

Got a kick out of this article today, especially since we all fit in the different types of fans they listed. The Eternal Optimist The "Fire Pat" Twitter Reply Guy The New Student The Upperclassman The Lifer The Young Alum The Old-Timer The Player-Specific Bandwagoners The Pearl Clutcher The Chaotic Good Even though I'm not a lawyer, I think I best fit The Young Alum group. I fit under The eternal Optimist The Lifer The Old Timer

I did some research. Got hold of the book, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, and found that Sheridan was identified as Peter Sheridan. So probably a different guy. But a drunk "Sheridan" was a fixture on M street in the late sixties. BTW, the book is great and as relevant today as it was 50 years ago.
