Once again, no change atop the Associated Press Top 25, as Gonzaga received 63 out of 64 first place ballots un this week’s poll. The ‘Zags easily defeated Northern Arizona (88-58), Dixie State (112-67) and San Francisco (85-62), improving their record to 10-0. Baylor retained the #2 slot once again, with the Bears winning against Central Arkansas (93-56), Alcorn State (105-76), and at Iowa State (76-65). There was some shuffling in the balance of the top five, with Villanova advancing one slot to #3, Texas jumping four slots to #4, and Iowa moving up five slots to #5; the Wildcats did not play after pausing competition due to COVID-19 and postponing scheduled games against St. John’s and Xavier (and the Wildcats have now, again, paused competition due to COVID-19), the Longhorns won at then-#3 ranked Kansas (84-59) and had a scheduled game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi canceled due to COVID-19, and the Hawkeyes defeated then-#19 ranked Northwestern (87-72) and won at then-#14 ranked Rutgers (77-75).
Michigan was the biggest gainer amongst ranked teams this week, moving up six slots to #10 after winning at Maryland (84-73) and against then-#19 ranked Northwestern (85-66); Florida State dropped the furthest amongst still-ranked teams, falling seven slots to #25 after losing at then-unranked Clemson (77-67) and having a scheduled game against then-#20 ranked Duke postponed due to COVID-19 exposures in the Blue Devils’ program.
Northwestern (formerly ranked #19) and Ohio State (formerly ranked #25) both fell out of the AP Top 25; the Wildcats lost both scheduled games at then-#10 ranked Iowa and then-16 ranked Michigan, and the Buckeyes defeated Nebraska (90-54) and lost at then-#21 ranked Minnesota (77-60). Clemson and Saint Louis are now in the AP Top 25; the Tigers are now ranked in a tie for #19 after following up their win over then-#18 ranked Florida State with a 66-65 win at Miami (Florida), and the Billikens are now ranked in a tie for #23 without even playing after having games against Duquesne and Massachusetts postponed due to COVID-19.
There are again just two Big East Conference school ranked in the Top 25, with Villanova at #3 and Creighton moving up four slots to #7 after a 67-65 win at Providence. Three other Big East schools (Seton Hall, Xavier and Connecticut) also received votes in this week’s polls.
