Is the whole Rayful/Zo story back in the news again in DC, or is JT just rehashing old news? It seems a strange topic for a Friday in July.

a new DVD was released about Rayful on Monday..so I'm assuming his "friendship" w/ to Zo & Tucker is including in the DVD..I'm also guessing this is the reason why JT is discussing it today..

Amazing that JT II commanded that type of respect. Especially in the type of “circle” in which Rayful traveled…

Could somebody enlighten me about this story? The story that I heard down in North Carolina was that Zo and John Turner had been hanging out with Rayful Edmonds, who just so happened to be a notorious drug kingpin in the DC metro area at the time…Million dollar a week business, according to the story about Rayful on 20/20…Nino Brown type stuff… JT II called a meeting with Rayful, and asked him to leave Zo and John alone…but I think Turner became a casualty of the incident (so I’ve heard)… I'm quite sure some of the other guys can correct my little $0.02 as needed...

Edmond was a HUGE Hoya fan and this dated back to some friendships with Michael Graham too---so when Pops asked him to stay away because he was "in a position where he could hurt the program" Edmond backed off--but some of the guys (Turner, Anthony Tucker) didn't heed to warnings to stay away from him and that's why they were gone. It cost GU a National Title in my opinion--if GU had Tucker and Turner with Zo and company--that would have been a SICK team.

I've heard that was why Graham got kicked off as well-- he wouldn't stay away from the old "neighborhood."
What a shame.
Imagine the '85 team:
3-- Reggie 4-- Graham 5-- Patrick
Scary, scary, scary...

Interesting that Big John should rehash the issue. He certainly put himself in harms way to protect Mourning and steer him in the right direction. To Mourning’s credit, he listened to Big John and broke off his relationship with Rayful. Actually, Jon Turner introduced Mourning to Rayful Edmonds. Turner was a childhood friend of Rayful Edmonds – or at least grew up in the same neighborhood.
Big John told Turner and Mourning to terminate the relationship with Rayful. Mourning did as instructed. For whatever reasons, Turner chose not to do so. Consequently, Big John revoked his scholarship. Turner’s mother complained that Big John revoked Jon Turner’s scholar, but not Morning’s.
Shortly after leaving Georgetown, Turner got busted for possession of cocaine. If I recall correctly, he was charged with possession and intent to sell. He beat the charge on a technicality. He then sobered up and stopped the foolishness. Jon Turner went on to play at an NAIA school in Oklahoma and later was a 1st round draft pick of the Houston Rockets.
I think Turner later regretted his actions. His leaving certainly hurt the team. He was the enforcer and was capable at playing at a college All-American level. But, one of my most vivid memories was Turner going after Jason Williams of St. John’s. Jason was a tough, hardnosed player. Some even considered him a “bully.” But you could see the fear in Wiliams’ eyes when Turner went after him. (Much like Ron Artest when confronted by an angry Ben Wallace.) Those where the days when Georgetown sparked fear in college basketball. Sometimes all Georgetown had to do was show up and go through some pre-game drills. Georgetown had the game won before the opening tip off.
Anthony Tucker left for different reasons than Turner. As a freshman, Tucker was a starting forward. However, Tucker knew that Alonzo Mourning – high school player of the year – was coming to Georgetown. Mourning would the featured post player. Also, on campus, was a first team Junior College All-American, who was sitting out a year because of NCAA transfer rules – Jon Turner. Anthony Tucker, at 6’9”, had been a McDonalds’ All-American. As a college freshman for the Hoyas, he had a “so-so” year –not the year that was expected of him. Even so, he wanted to be the featured post player. That was not going to happen with both Mourning and Turner suiting up for the Hoyas the next season. . In addition, another McDonalds’ All-American forward, Milton Bell, was also coming to the Hoyas the next season. Mostly likely Tucker would not even start – Jaren Jackson was the other forward. From Tucker’s perspective, it made sense for him to transfer.

NTAMM, thanks for the thorough reply. Turner was terrific and a real loss to GU... similar to the loss of Graham. I thought JT forced Michael to sit out a year due to grades, but maybe that was not the case. Smart of Zo to listen to JT and I always thought it was fascinating that JT stood up to Rae Edmonds and "won" the point. These stories about Graham, Turner, Tucker, Bell and more show just how tough it is to be consistenly successful at the top levels of college hoops.

Thanks for filling in a lot of the gray areas and correcting some of the rumors that had gotten out of hand.

Very informative, NTAMM... Thanks for filling in a lot of the gray areas and correcting some of the rumors that had gotten out of hand. I wholeheartedly agree. It distressed me to see Anthony Tucker lumped in with the Rayful Edmonds saga. He was long gone before JTII had his "summit" with Edmonds. While he grew up in a neighborhood which fell under Edmonds' sway and may well have known Rayful, his departure was not connected to that. The DVD was a bit of a topic in my barbershop last Saturday. Seems like it's sold out of most stores. But the barbershop owner pulled out about five copies that he had for sale. I passed on the prospect....
