My expectations are not at all in jest. I expect and accept that lots of things take a long time. I am very patient and think that the time frames imposed by many fans are artificial. Sometimes things happen, like crazy in-season transfers, that are NOT the fault of the coach. So we wait- or at least I will. Others can vote with their feet and go elsewhere. I will not miss them.

I really hope we don't do this w every publication. They're all going to have us in this range. Nothing is going to change between now and when the games (hopefully) start in November. I can quibble with whether we're really worse off than Butler and St. Johns but I don't think that really matters. Even if it's 8th, this is a very soft BE this year w only two solid top 25 teams and then a whole lot of questions.
In terms of goals for next season, going to reiterate what I said months back in the Program Approach thread. I will care way more about these three things than whether we finish 8th or 10th next year.
1. Defense: Can the teams defensive efficiency be top 100? That's really not a high bar 2. Player development: This one is a little soft and tougher to quantify. But to me this really comes down to Wahab, with Pickett or Blair having stellar sr. seasons as a nice bonus. This whole offseason might make this difficult but we need to see our returning players make improvements. Focused on offensive efficiency relative to usage. 3. Recruiting. Can we land two top 100 players for 2021? Do we see anything resembling a cohesive recruiting strategy? Do we have to scramble in spring again to fill out class?

Here's how I will judge the upcoming season (assuming there is one):
GOOD - we surprise everyone and finish in the middle of the BE. Wahab is a force and Pickett becomes the player everyone hopes he will become. Freshmen impress.
BAD - Wahab regresses or at least doesn't improve. Pickett remains picket. Freshmen look meh. We finish 10-11 in the BE.
UGLY - All of the above plus we have more off court issues, mid season dropouts/transfers, and walk-ons starting.

I don't have the time at the moment, but would be curious to go back for the past 3 years and see how we've performed compared to preseason projections.
My initial guess is that despite the annual protests that we are projected to finish too low or somehow being disrespected/overlooked by columnists/pollsters, is that we haven't outperformed those projections.

From the Big East pre-season polls: Season 2013-14 Pre-season 2; Finished 7 2014-15 Pre-season 2; Finished 2 2015-16 Pre-season 2; Finished 8 2016-17 Pre-season 4; Finished 9 2017-18 Pre-season 9; Finished 8 2018-19 Pre-season 7; Finished 6 2019-20 Pre-season 6; Finished 8

From the Big East pre-season polls: Season 2013-14 Pre-season 2; Finished 7 2014-15 Pre-season 2; Finished 2 2015-16 Pre-season 2; Finished 8 2016-17 Pre-season 4; Finished 9 2017-18 Pre-season 9; Finished 8 2018-19 Pre-season 7; Finished 6 2019-20 Pre-season 6; Finished 8 Understand it is just one poll of many and that the final JT3 years are extreme disappointments, but isolating the three Ewing years we have an average pre-season projection of 7.3/10 and and average finish of 7.3/10. Pretty accurate, I'd say. An optimist might point out we beat expectations 2 of 3 years, but if we are looking for a similar level of outperforming this year and ready to pat ourselves on the back for finishing 9th instead of 10th, that's a problem.
