Through or under screens- no switching. Active hands without reaching. Constant foot movement. Pressing and trapping whenever feasible. Bigs inside blocking and altering shots. ALL OF THE ABOVE PLEASE!!!

I already wrote my missive on the other thread regarding defense, just a few points that were brought up here that I thought we worth addressing: - Surprisingly, fouls were not the issue last year. Our Free Throw Rate was 47th lowest in country, legitimately the only positive aspect statistically of our defense.
- It's really all about the 3 pointers. We let teams take a ton (3 point rate of 41.9, 303rd in country) and they made a ton (364%, 314th in country). The suggestion about going under screens doesn't jive with those numbers
- Our defensive rebounding was not great statistically, 209th in country. I do think a lot of that has to do with the number of 3s allowed, those long rebounds inherently lead to 2nd chances. We actually have great offensive rebounding numbers, those were mostly Yurt7 and I think we'll miss that a ton next year. For folks clamoring for Pickett to play the 3, I think he held his own at the 4, his defensive rebounding numbers are solid and it helped him avoid guarding people on perimeter
- I realize the pick and roll defense is only for a few brief seconds of each possession, and teams can run multiple pnr's in a set. And it only takes one for it to breakdown so you can do a great job on the first 3 and still give up a bucket. My harping on the hard hedge really goes back to the 3s, it's the pick and roll defense that brings giving up a 3 into play moreso than other coverages.
- Yes Wahab played pnr's better than Yurt7, but I still feel like coaching is adapting players to scheme and we just haven't done it. Baylor jumps out to me; they used to exclusively be 2-3 zone, and switched to a man system w icing / switching screens and saw amazing results. I also think Wahab can play other schemes better and I'd rather him be closer to the basket and let other players stay home on shooters
- Even w Yurt7 out, our defensive efficiency was no better down the stretch. Looking at the games after the DePaul injury, our Adjusted D Efficiency was something like 102.7, while our full season number was 100.1. Fatigue could certainly be a factor there not to mention foul trouble, and I would question why we continued to push the pace w a 6 man rotation, but it's irrelevant at this point
- In Ewings first year, I think you could actually pin some of the numbers on the amount of turnovers the offense committed. I don't subscribe to hoopslens or other services that would break out defensive efficiency in halfcourt v transition. But I think it's fair to say if we turn the ball over more, there's more layups going the other way.
- Roster turnover is certainly part of it. When you have 6 new players every year, it's naturally going to be harder. I don't see that changing this year (especially w COVID) and even next year we're looking at something like 5 open scholarships pending whatever we do w last spot.

As we have seen under Pat, roster turnover has been the norm. Bad defense has been the norm. The next two years will bring 7 new recruits and 5 new recruits. Let's fit the defense to accommodate the players we have, but always stay with the shooters. Study college basketball defenses that work and copy them.

If you have been paying attention, transfer are through the roof for many, many schools.

If you have been paying attention, transfer are through the roof for many, many schools. So what? I don’t care about other schools. And many of those schools have better defenses than us despite transfers (not to mention your starters aren't typically the ones leaving). As I have noted before, in 2015 Arkansas Little Rock had the 288th best defense. Chris Beard (and his defensive guru assistant) took over in 2016, and Arkansas Little Rock's defense was 33rd. After Beard left, Arkansas Little Rock's defense fell back down to 185, which is about where it has been since. Tubby Smith's defense at Texas Tech in 2016 was 72 (and 116 and 120 the two years before). In 2017, Beard's defense was 56, followed by 4, 1, and 9. Clearly, Beard's scheme and his ace defensive assistant's scheme have made a huge difference in both places where he has coached. Does anybody think that Beard's 2017 roster at Texas Tech was really that much better than the roster's we've had as far as talent is concerned? I am 100% confident that if he or his assistant could take over Georgetown our defense would be a lot better. We need to do something different. If I were Ewing I would basically study Beard and Texas Tech, figure out what they do (a lot of ICE on PNR defense), and copy it. Ewing clearly has access to great basketball minds and resources; he needs to use it and do something different.
