He has such a great attitude - actually all of the class of 2008 seem to - if they all stick around (or if at least 3 of the 4 make it to their senior season) we will have something very special with them leading the team. That's not to say that we don't have the same good thing this year ...

I thought it was an excellent piece. He is a throwback player. I love him. He is a Hoya to the core. His class of 2008 will go down as the one that help restore that G'town pride back into the program when it is all said and done. Much props to Crawford, and I hope he has great season for us next year.

I don’t know Tyler…but after reading that article, I wish I did…
Definitely seems like he is a “Classic” Hoya…I’m getting a Perry MacDonald(sp) type of vibe from him…but a better shooter and ball-handler…and probably not a better fighter…:-)…but he sounds like a guy that probably doesn’t get into too many fights…
If you’re going to build a solid championship-type squad, a Crawford-type is a very important building block…
I know JT II would have been “Pleased as Punch” to have him on one of his squads…

Man, part of me wishes more of our recruits came from that part of the country where Tyler grew up just because this newspaper covers its local sports heroes like no one else. It was so easy for me to keep up with Tyler's senior season in high school because this newspaper was there for all of it and did quite a few features on Tyler. And when Tyler was a frosh with Gtown this newspaper did an early article in November on Tyler that gave more insight into the Hoya team than any other article at the time. It would take more than a month's time before the WPost or WTimes would do anything to equal it
Tyler is all class.

I know I heard he had guard-size but played power-forward and center for the hoyas at times. When you talk about him fighting, are you talking about something that went down with Jerome Lane with Pitt. I heard about it. What actually happened between them during the game?

I'm not sure what happened with Perry and Jerome Lane, but I definitely know what went down with Tillmon and Jerome Lane... I have to find that videotape.... As far as the fight that took place at Pitt, I'm not sure which parties were involved...someone borrowed my videotape of that game and didn't give it back... some of the other guys can probably elaborate on that incident...

What happened with Tillmon and Lane? Gosh, Way…you ARE a young-buck… Back in ’88, in the Cap Centre, a three-point shot goes up by a Pitt player, and the rebound is grabbed by Mark Tillmon and Shawn Miller(I think) of Pitt… The referee blows the whistle and rules that it is a “Jump-Ball”…but the two players don’t let go of the ball…finally, the Pitt player snatches it from Tillmon. After doing this, Mark gives him a forearm shiver in the ribs…the blow didn’t hurt the guy, but it was enough to ‘kick things up a knotch’… So Tillmon squares-off against the guy…but Jerome Lane runs over to take-up for his teammate, which he was supposed to do, and he pushes Tillmon … LET’S PLAY THE FEUD!!!!! Tillmon throws a right-cross at Lane that connects to his jaw!!! Ronnie Highsmith grabs Lane and Tillmon continues punching as Jerome is taken to the ground…All the while, Dwayne ”Johnnie-come-Lately” Bryant is throwing blows at Jerome Lane also, and connects on a few as Jerome is being tossed like a rag-doll by Ronnie Highsmith… Eventually, one of the refs grabs Tillmon and pulls him out of the fray…The Georgetown basketball team, who have all left the bench, start making their way back to the bench after Big John has lifted one of his menacing hands and motions them to return from whence they came… I know I haven’t seen the tape in about ten years, but I can’t remember any of the Pitt players coming to Jerome’s rescue…

He was almost assuredly hitting on a cheerleader or a freshman co-ed during the initial stages of the fray. Time well spent, if you ask me. Let's just say, if even some of the stories are true, "Johnnie come lately" is not the nickname a lot of ladies knew him by. Or maybe it was, now that I think about it. . .

Actually, we had 2 fights against Pitt and that was the first one--we also got into it with McDonald and Lane throwing down at the Pitt Civic Arena in the game that Bill Raftery said "something needs to be done about this and John needs to control his team, they're always involved in these things" to which Pops BLASTED the Raf and things didn't get squashed until the following season.
In the second fight, it occurred when Lane and McDonald were fighting for position as a free throw was being attempted and Lane shoved Perry in the back and PErry threw some haymakers and connected with one that started another all out brawl. We fought Pitt a lot from 86-90 it seemed and Brian Shorter and Zo got into it a few times as did Darren Morningstar and Zo/John Turner. Personally I miss the days of the fighting as it led to an electric atmosphere and like John McEnroe's tantrums and fits of rage---served as FUEL for the Hoyas--we'd always come out and play our best in these hostile situations and go on a huge run. Best being the Syracuse BET Game in '84 that Editeded off Boeheim so much he threw a chair in post game press conference.
As for the "johnny come lately" line on Dwyane Bryant, you obviously don't understand what Hoya Basketball is about--if you messed with one of us--you got the whole team coming after you--period. GU Hoops is about FAMILY and we often went at more aggressive in practice then what public saw in games. So as Pops said in HBO Special THe Perfect Upset--"if you wanted to fight/play a certain way, we ACCOMODATED you".

OOOHHHHH!!! So is that why when Raftery asked John a question after the ‘Cuse game in the Cap Center in ‘89, Big John jokingly said, “I’m not talking to you…I don’t like you…”?

I know you weren't ragging him. Dwayne is the man. Or so the girls in Harbin told me. I have forwarded this Crawford article to every Hoya fan I know. This is good stuff, so I apologize also for straying off topic. This is another in the trend of articles showing the many good qualities of this core group of young players. Something they should all be proud of. . .particularly since they all have these values without the assistance of Coach K or American Express. (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Great article. IT reflects what a lot of us saw in his game and commented on. He is a solid team player and a great role player.
Also, I loved this quote:
"Coach Thompson is the father head of the team, and he's a Princeton grad, so that alone lets you know he's smart," Crawford said. "He's a cool dude. He gets along with everybody."
That is a great rep for coach to have. I think our best recruiters might turn out to be our current team.... what kid wouldn't want to join a bunch like this who are so positive about one another and the coaching staff?
Finally, credit should be given where due. The four freshmen who really contributed this past year, were all recruited under Esh. He deserves credit for bringing in talented kids with great attitude.
JT3 deserves credit for taking "someone else's recruits" and making the most of his team. He won them over to his way of thinking and his leadership.
In short, both Esh AND JT3 deserve credit for recruiting and developing a great bunch of kids for GU. Personally, I believe the bar has been set as -- maybe not the "talent level" bar, but the work ethic and attitude bar. It will be really difficult for a freshmen to come in and play with these guys, and not live up to the high standards they have set.
I am sure that Summers, Rivers and probably Macklin too, have all experienced that and want to be a part of it.
Hiring JT3 is the best thing that has happened to GU basketball since.... well... since hiring JTII.
Enjoy the summer boys.... things are going in the right direction!

I have this odd feeling that Tyler Crawford is a potential Nat Burton in training. Can't you see in about 3 years, we're tied in a tournament game and holding for the last shot, and Tyler waves Jonathan Wallace off and waits just a little bit longer than it SEEMS he should have to make his move. The only trouble is that Sead's probably one year too early to play the role of Trent Hillier running off the bench.
