Summer league games can often have an uneven quality to them. Today was just such an instance.
At the 1:30 start, the Hoyas on court were just Jon W, Mr. Ewing and Mr. Green. The GW guy showed up midway through the first quarter while three other guys were there from the start. I don't know where the heavy set guard came from but he clearly has not been on the treadmill lately.
In the audience was the senior Thompson-resplendent in a peach colored polo and laughing a lot-and Hibbert and Tyler in GU jerseys. Looked like they just came from the weight room. Brandon was sitting in the stands. All have gotten a bit larger as has Wallace. Good news for us late in the schedule. We are still not Cinncinati, though.
Ratty game with poor officiating. The opposition had a group of 6'6" thick guys who were playing for pride. Tough play inside from Calvin and an UFO who looked like 6'5" but 260. Quick guard play and a bench that went 7 deep. Caused the Hoyas fits in the first half. Hard fouls allowed but not by the Hoyas. Refs changed the style of play late in the first half and no one knew what a foul was. Unfortunately the refs experimented when the Tombs were defending; they went down by 10 at the end of the half trying to figure out what was a foul. Tombs coach baited refs mercilessly. On the court and begged for a T.
Mr. Ewing brought his relentless energy in the first half' but was misguided today early. Disorganized with the ball and attacked the interior with gusto. Lost the ball off the dribble to hacks and to his foot once. Green cruised outside and worked on his jumper. JW with sharp passing while guarding the ball well. Wallace showed that he has worked a lot on his crossover. Hoyas and the GW guy controlled inside and boarded well. However, the big guys on the other squad went inside effectively as the philosophical discussion of what constituted a charge went on on the Hoya defensive end without resolution in the first half.
Hoyas were around most of the game on the efforts of JG, couple of Wallace jumpers and Mr. Ewings attacks through the lane. Our UFOs were OK and did not make a lot of mistakes.
The second half featured a long period of misses by the other guy-its the summer and emotion lost way to actual ability. JG and JW were running on the break and Mr Ewing rebounded well. The GW big guy who had suffered a scratched eye in the first half-one of the phantom no call plays, the guy was grabbed and clawed by Calvin and crumpled to the ground while the ref looked at the whole thing and ate his whistle-played evenly and defended against the inside game against whoever they were.
Game went on with whoever they were missing everything and turning over a lot. However:
1. We run well and JW is handling the ball even better than last year early.
2. JG was the best player on the court. Rebounding and interior defense. Experimental three point shots off kick outs are excused.
3. Mr. Ewing plays with great energy even when his shot isn't happening.
Low point total proves that putting it in the cylinder can be tough in July.Surprising that we won. Ugly win but I would cheer if we beat Pitt the same way. Again.
