Well-coached team that is tough to guard. Also a winnable game if our guys pay attention to detail. Time for BE win #2.

The matchups in this game are very weird. Both teams start three guards and want to push the pace. Creighton shoots it very well from the outside, a weakness for the Hoyas defense. You can't help off any of the three guards EVER, but you can the forwards. Zegarowski has looked incredible this season and he makes the three guards him, Alexander and Ballock threats from anywhere. However, Creighton isn't good inside. They really aren't. Naji Marshall was able to get into the paint and make a play at will last game. Creighton's bigs shouldn't be able to limit the drive. A five out set should help create some space for our guards to increase playmaking and free up shooters and driving lanes. If the offense becomes more set on not forcing Yurt the ball and allowing the guards to create, much like St. John's, then this is very winnable. If not, this Creighton team could come in and hit 20 threes and win handily.

I'm not sure about the 5 out set, I doubt McDermott will have Bishop or Jones cover Yurtseven out there until he proves he can shoot the ball consistently from outside...

I think Yurtseven being around 40% last season has enough of a jump shot to be respected out there and if they leave him open, I think he can hit it. And how much it opens the lane for our slashers to create, so I think it could really help.

Yurtseven is 1-7 from three this season, opponents will make him prove that he'll take & make shots from deep before they commit to covering him in my view... Not to mention that him being outside the paint will help opponents with defensive rebounding... I hope PE does the same when Jones or Bishop come out to set screens, the guards should go over the top on every screen one of their bigs set...

Bishop looked pretty decent to me in some earlier Creighton games; they may not be real bonafide threats, but they are definitely not useless like the SJU bigs were. I foresee offensive rebounding being an area where we need to capitalize on our advantage; if we let them get second chance opportunities and kickouts for open 3's, it will be a long evening for us.
Dan hit it on the head in the OP. Mcdermott is a solid coach who will be able to craft a gameplan to exploit our weaknesses and make adjustments on the fly. This is another game where I need to see more from Pat the coach to do the same and prevent Creighton from stealing too many points and possessions based on scheme. Much like Nova, they have 3 shooters that can hurt us; our guys need to understand who the biggest threats are and plan to neutralize them at the cost of conceding perimeter shots to everyone else (i.e. not overhelping on those players). If Pat continues to try to jam a square peg into a round hole, then this loss will be on him.

Guards have to be on their A-game on defense. Can't give their shooters any breathing room

I would LOVE to see Yurt and Wahab on the floor at the same time!

I would LOVE to see Yurt and Wahab on the floor at the same time! It does sound intriguing, but against a deft-shooting, quick-passing, perimeter-oriented team, I fear a lineup of Allen, Mac/Blair, Pickett/Mosely, Wahab, and Yurt would struggle mightily to guard the 3-point line.

I hate to say it, but I don't see any way we hold Creighton under 80 points, and I would not be at all surprised if they dropped 90 on us if they have a good shooting night. they execute their offense so well, they are going to have open 3s all game/open shots at the rim off PnR slips by the bigs - if we play the quality of D we have played most of the time this season. If they have a lousy shooting night, we have a chance if we play well. But if they shoot to their normal standard, it would take a truly exceptional effort for us to even keep this game close.

They are going to get their shots- that is their strength. We need to pound them with our power inside. If they are on fire from three, they win. If we can destroy them inside and draw fouls, we have a pretty decent shot. I would * LOVE * to see us focus more on maximizing our strengths can trying to contain our opponents.

Creighton is now #25. Chance to beat a ranked team. We are 2-1 against ranked teams going into this game...

Sometimes a team needs to dictate the action, rather than react to the opponent. I like the cut of your jib.

After re-watching the Nova game again, the staff has to allow Pickett to set the majority of high screens. The nice run in the 1st half which included the lob from Allen to Yurtseven came from Pickett screens...
Also, the staff should get Yurtseven to utilize more of his face-up game along the baselines, he's deadly with that shot and he seems to make much quicker decisions when he's faced up also....

I agree with this, but only to an extent. First, pounding the ball inside is useful only to the degree that it (a) yields easy high probability shots, and (b) it creates open looks from three. Basically, if Yurtseven is having an off day, this strategy tends to fall apart. Second, we can trade twos for threes only to an extent. I feel like in too many games, we trade 2's for 3's and it makes it that much harder to keep up (or to catch up when we are behind). By three point shooting percentage, we are 83rd in the country - well above average. But, by point distribution, we are 309/353 in shooting threes, meaning almost every team takes more threes than we do. Given our shooting percentage, we really need to be taking more threes, or working to get more open threes, but for whatever reason, that doesn't seem part of the scheme in most games. While Ewing's teams have never taken a ton of threes, this year is definitely the least we have taken, by far.

One of the things that limits our number of threes is the fact that Jagan, Blair, and even to some extent Jamarko need a lot of space to get off that shot, so they don't get as many comfortable chances to pull the trigger. So creating more plays to give them more space would help.

So creating more plays to give them more space would help. Exactly and these opportunities come through ball movement. I believe that the key is McClung. If he is just launching shots, particularly if having a bad shooting night, it is a gift to Creighton. His ability to create open shots for Mosley, Pickett and Blair is undervalued by those who think of him as primarily a scorer.

Need to recruit players who don’t need space to hit threes. Ones that can put them up quickly in-your-face, like Nova has. 😉
