Big changes in the Associated Press Top 25 this week. Previously top ranked, Duke plummeted nine spots to #10 after losing to the unranked Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin in overtime, 85-83…and the Blue Devils were not even the biggest poll loser this week. That “honor” belongs to Texas Tech, which dropped from #12 to completely unranked, after losses to Iowa (72-61) and Creighton (83-76, in overtime) in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. The biggest jump of the week was by previously unranked Michigan, which soared to #4 after moving to 7-0 with wins over Iowa State (83-76), then-#6 ranked North Carolina (73-64) and then-#8 ranked Gonzaga (82-64) in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
Louisville is now ranked #1, at an undefeated 7-0, after defeating Western Kentucky, 71-54, in Nashville. There are three ranked Big East Conference schools, with Seton Hall falling three slots to #16 after a 71-69 loss to then-#11 ranked Oregon and wins over Southern Mississippi (81-56) and Iowa State (84-76) in the Battle 4 Atlantis. Villanova dropped one slot to #23 after a Big Five win over La Salle, 83-72, and Butler made its first appearance as a ranked team at #24 after wins over Missouri (63-52) and Stanford (68-67) in the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City. Xavier, ranked #25 last week, fell out of the AP Top 25 after a 87-62 win over Lipscomb. DePaul and Xavier are the only other Big East Conference schools to have received votes in this week’s poll.
In addition to Texas Tech and Xavier, two other schools fell out of the rankings this week; Virginia Commonwealth, formerly #20, lost to unranked Purdue (59-56) and then-#17 ranked Tennessee (72-69) in the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville FL, and Florida, formerly #24, fell to unranked status despite a 73-67 win over unranked Marshall. In addition to Michigan and Butler, newly ranked are Florida State, which moved to #17 after wins over unranked Chicago State (113-56) and then-#17 ranked Tennessee (60-57) and unranked Purdue (63-60, in overtime) in the Emerald Coast Classic, and Dayton, which moved to # 19 after wins over unranked Georgia (80-61) and unranked Virginia Polytechnic Institute (89-62) and a loss to then-#4 ranked Kansas (90-84, in overtime) in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in Lahaina HI.
